Advice please?
I don't know what to do with a little new info

I'm not sure what to do. I got an interesting PM from one of the IG characters, but I don't know if I should share it, and a wild theory I came up with because of it. Do I share it here, and hope that we all benefit from it? Do I not because anyone can read these posts, and I don't really know what side I or anyone else is on yet? Or are we all in this together?

Advice, especially from more experienced ARG players, or from anyone who has something pertinent to say, would be much appreciated.

And my apologies for dangling a carrot in front of you all.

I take it you decided not to share?

I am mulling over a couple of carrots myself and haven't decided whether to share or not.

Take a peek at the Unfiction Terms of Service. You'll find that content on Unfiction is considered "out of game." That is, it basically doesn't exist in the world of the game, its plot, and its characters. Characters can't post here and stuff posted here doesn't directly influence the game. (Admittedly, most people running games will skim posts here and make behind-the-scenes alterations to the game play mechanics, tailoring the experience to the players in near-realtime, but that's all behind the scenes, not directly in the plot, so shouldn't be worried about--and is in fact improved by posting here.)

So whether or not you share with the other players is your choice. Let me remind you, though, that ARGs are built up on communities and teamwork. Maybe there is a clue written in Sanskrit, or is in a classified ad in Hong Kong, or involves the minutiae of art history... Not everyone knows Sanskrit or has access to foreign newspapers or studied art history, but the power of the group as a whole will conquer the puzzle because someone participating has the ability and shares the answer--and the game, story, and players grow because of it.

Okay. I'm giving you what I've got. My concern was that some players might not remember that they aren't supposed to use two particular pieces in-game: First, the bit about Bishop/Sawyer sharing an ID chip, and second, that I am getting inside info directly from Bishop. Because if the Corp knew this, you know they'd put a stop to it, and that source of intel would dry up.

The other thing about this game is that Fundi Tech has sort of changed the rules a bit from a normal ARG. They've intentionally set us against each other, by making things competitive. Hopefully we'll be able to figure out how much that changes the rules about what to post out in the open here, and what not to. I almost feel like just saying, "Well, we foil you in your attempts at such manipulation, you naughty puppetmasters." But that only works if everyone does it. And since an awful lot of the players don't post here, but I suspect do read here, it seems like we don't have that assurance. Especially when only some people participate in solving the puzzles for the group.

So anyway, here goes. First was a message from me to Bishop saying something like, "How are things going?"

Quote:
Bishop says: I see you are keeping a low profile. Good. Remember getting noticed isn't always a good thing. Oh and since you ask - Things are slow and business sucks. But at least I get a stipend for this TIA overflow stuff.

Quote:
To Bishop: I figure keeping a low profile is the only way to stay relatively worry free, no matter what time you're in. Especially important when you are still trying to figure out what is going on in a situation, as is the case here. Also especially important when you are as addicted to information as I am. Of course, being addicted to information means that you've got to know how to keep your mouth shut--and that's me.

I'm a little confused, though. For the TIA overflow stuff, I thought that the TIA people were those of us here in 2007. When you say TIA overflow, do you mean doing stuff to keep the 2007 group informed?

Hopefully I'm not stepping on your toes by asking, but I thought you were working for slewth. If that is the case, shouldn't he be sending you stuff to do, too? Or am I wrong entirely?

Glad you're at least getting a stipend. Here's hoping you get some more work soon.

Thanks for replying to my initial message. You seemed like an interesting guy. Sorry for all of the questions, I hope I haven't offended in any way--definitely not my intent.

Quote:
Bishop says: Slewth? I work for Sawyer who is kind of a sleuth... but I'm not sure what you mean. We freelance for the District and for the TIA by proxy. You guys may not know this - but theres sort of a reputation you get when you are assigned to Grey District. Sort of a - running joke? Either way, overflow is overflow both now and in the past and well, if you ask me it bites. Fun though when you get to ride the info stream all the way to the top and back without the corps noticing! What were we talking about? Oh YEA, prestige is a killer... stay outta sight I say.

Quote:
To Bishop: Oh, dear. There are a couple of similar letters, and I go getting all mixed up. It's the bane of my life. Sawyer is whom I meant. I swear--any chance they have human memory upgrades in your time? Maybe I should sign up for one now...

I had a feeling that the Grey District was thought of as kind of the Badlands of the city. It's too bad everyone can't play together nicely, isn't it?

It sounds like you're an information addict, kind of like me. I wish I knew if that were a good thing or a bad one. Or maybe I mean a safe one or an unsafe one. I just wish I had enough information to figure out how to help all of you there in our future.

What's Sawyer like as a boss? Is he easy-going, or more hard-bitten?

Thanks for replying. If I'm going to keep a low profile, I've got to spend my time talking to SOMEONE in the city!

Quote:
Bishop says: Damn right. I'd jack the feed into my head if I could get a hold of an Rand-411 splitter, but they stopped making those things in '28 after those two guys' heads exploded. Morons. Don't buy stock in Randcorp -- you'll regret it! Anyway what was the question? Oh ya, Sawyer - he's all right - saved me from a life of corporate hell I tell ya! and with our Ident scans sliced together... well actually I'd better not incriminate you with that knowledge. Maybe I can shoot you some of our case files later if you are really interested? I'm sure I could find a few juicy ones about a cheating husband or some non-corp hookers or something. You got a girlfriend back in 07? Maybe I can slice into the marriage docs and see if you guys hook up! (Assuming you don't get pasted in one of the Dead Zones that is.) Oh gotta go - my filter scanner's about to time out!

Quote:
To Bishop: Actually, that would be boyfriend for me--being a straight woman--and in any case, it's not an issue at the moment.

I've asked if it is possible to reveal our gender without revealing our names from the admins--hopefully that will clear up the confusion for everyone.

Yeah, I'd love to see some of the case files, if it would be okay. Like I said, absolutely addicted information.

Quote:
Bishop says: You're a babe?! I've gotta start reading these Agent Files! Oh Damn what did I say before?

Uh. I gotta go do some stuff. I'll get you that, uh, other stuff soon.

So, okay, my theory is this. Bishop mentions that he and Sawyer share an ident. That got me to thinking--what if my actual slip--thinking that Bishop is working for Slewth--is actually the case? I mean, what if Sawyer is using the Slewth identity for any covert stuff, and the Sawyer identity for what the city knows? That could mean that Bishop's obvious incompetence is a cover--it was a little overdone, in my opinion. I mean, "Oh, here's the sidewalk, and there's a wall"? Not even Rain Man is that dull-witted.

So Bishop does the checking out of people for Slewth/Sawyer, and then they see how they can screw things up for Foo and possibly even Theo.

I hope this info was worth the wait and the "carrot-dangling."

The information was very interesting, and worth the wait.

If you don't want to read the rest of this post, just accept the basic premise of "Trust the PMs" and scroll down. That's all I'm saying.

Regarding the in-game faction issue, this has been discussed extensively earlier in the game. Last time, the issue turned out to be a non-issue and the perceived "factions" didn't really work to splitting us up beyond how WE, as individuals, interact with the characters.

The in-game karma system describes how interaction works in-game very well, I think. Everyone is presented with puzzles. It is in all of our best interests to share these puzzles, regardless of color. When we solve the puzzle, sometimes we are given a choice regarding who gets the information. Do we send it to Defense-Corp, or to the Brotherhood?

So far, the decisions we made about who receives the information hasn't effected the plot for everyone in the game. If I choose to turn in rogue agent "Forge" in one of the puzzles, we do not receive a news article the next day describing an unfortunate "accident". However, my player experience changes--my karma shifts positively or negatively, and my interactions with characters adjusts accordingly.

The information we receive should work the same way. If I find out that Bishop is the 2037 version of me, I should share that information on the forums. Other players should not, in this instance, hire ninja assassins to kill me in the present to ensure Bishop ceases to be--because that punishes me for being a chatty Cathy. However, they can use the information to shape their individual experiences in the game. Try to gain confirmation from in-game characters about Bishop's mysterious present-time identity and whatnot.

Before, trusting the PMs knew what they were doing paid off. Let's trust them again--especially since most of what we're discussing is esconced firmly within the realms of speculation. (Hopefully this long-ass post isn't as confusing as I think it might be)

Glad to hear about the PMs info, notgordian

I think you make a good point, notgordian. Especially since I'd not seen the information about how the PMs were going to be watching that what we say can't be used against us if it is said outside of the Deus City gameframe. That actually relieves me a lot about this game. It means that we can still treat this as a regular ole ARG. This is, as at least a few of you know, the first ARG I've actually played, though I've been aware of them for far longer (since Majestic--I think it was called?--came out, though I didn't manage to be able to get in on that one).

Excellent (rubbing hands)--I think we're in business.
