Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
dirty doings in re Japanese TV

I don't know how many of you are familiar with the Japanese animation Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya). This 14-episode TV series about a fantastic young girl in search of the abnormal, based on a set of light novels, took anime fandom by moderate storm last season and spawned a massive number of insane internet memes related to Haruhi and "Haruhiism". Since that time, a second season has been announced, and fans sat down to wait for a licensing announcement.

Today, something weird happened. http://www.animeondvd.com/ now displays all 'S's and 'O's on its front page as red hyperlinks leading to http://asosbrigade.com/. (The name of Haruhi's school association is the SOS brigade.) At first, this was taken as a tacit confirmation of licensing. However, after taking a closer look, a few strange things have turned up.

I'm going to quote this text from the Megatokyo Forums anime board:

Quote:
Hmm...curiouser and curiouser. Okay, a few items of note that I've dug up with regards to this site:

1) Looking at the source code for the page reveals a comment that's readable if you switch encoding to Japanese EUC-JP:

禁則事項は12月22日に公表します

Read: kinsoku jikou wa 12 gatsu 22 nichi ni kouhyou shimasu.

Translated: Classified information will be announced on December 22.

Anyone familiar with the series will know "kinsoku jikou" being something Mikuru unfortunately has to say a lot to Kyon. So perhaps the site is being done in the style of a warning from Mikuru and/or Kyon?

2) I did a "Right-click -> Save As" on the image on the page, returning a filename of "h1-121806.gif". This might not be anything, or it could mean perhaps tomorrow the image might be something different. We'll have to check the page tomorrow to see.

3) The next item is a spoiler for anyone not familiar with the storyline in books that haven't made it to animation yet, so be warned.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

.
.
.
.

The site went up today, 12/18, which is also the day in the novels that Haruhi goes missing in "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya". Coincidentally, the main Haruhi website at http://www.haruhi.tv shows no page to be found today. These two items might be unrelated, but somehow I doubt it.

.
.
.
.

Again, these are all just random observations I've gathered from looking over the website and from poking around the Internet a bit. They could be nothing and this is just a static holding page until the 22nd when the announcement, whatever it is, is made. Personally, I'm not a big believer in coincidence so I'll be watching the site to see if anything develops.

Quote:
One other interesting thing to add.

I went and checked the page source at http://www.haruhi.tv and found this line commented at the bottom:

プログラム起動条件・鍵をそろえよ。最終期限・二日後

Read: puroguramu kidoujouken kagi wo soroe yo. saigo kigen futsukago

Rough translation: Program starting requirement: Complete the key. Final period after two days. (Maybe more like "We have two days left." or something like that?)

I'm fairly certain normal 404 pages don't have comments like that, much less nearly as much code as that page looks to have. So that seems really suspect to me. Again, no idea if it has anything to do with the announcement on the asosbrigade.com page, but I have a hard time writing it off as coincidence just yet.

There's reference to a "key" and I remember a conversation between Itsuki and Yuki in Episode 0 where they mention something to that effect (presumably with regards to Kyon and his effect on Haruhi.) I'm not sure what relevance that has here, but it nonetheless sprung to memory.

Quote:
Also, the little graphic of a page with an i on it has the sos-dan logo on it. However, the "Program starting requirement: Complete the key. Final period after two days" comment sounds like a reference to Dissappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, (the fourth book, which will probably be the plot of the second series) so it has nothing to do with any licensing plans.

Quote:
Damn, you're right about the image. I pulled it into Photoshop and played with the levels and the logo shows right up.

So perhaps we're dealing with two announcements that are being timed to go together? The North American release of the first series and maybe the formal announcement of the second season that we've heard is slated for the Fall of 2007? Just a theory for now.

Here's the image re-tooled to show the logo by the way:

The presence of Japanese text in the source code indicates that a Japanese company is responsible for the website, but if so, why has an American news site disfigured itself to point it out? Is this related to the upcoming second season or to a future Stateside release? The hidden graphics and source code messages indicate that this may be some kind of viral marketing work, so I'm presenting it to the experienced eyes at this site. Please help the fans figure out what all this means!

The comment in the html for that 404 on haruhi.tv has been updated to say that the deadline is tomorrow.

Any idea what that means? I know it's referring to the deadline for....whatever. Is that something new, or has that been up on the site since this thing started?

so it seems that they are trying to set up an american branch of the SOS Brigade
"Americans Spreading Excitement All Over the World with Haruhi Suzumiya"
ASOS

theres a XXSspace page
http://www.myspace.com/asosbrigade
with a few blogs which i'll post for those scared of XXSpace

Quote:

Hello America
Current mood: worried

Hello to everyone in the States. Haruhi has ordered me to make an American website for a new branch of our club she is forming, the Americans Spreading Excitement All Over the World with Haruhi Suzumiya (ASOS). My name is Kyon, and I am a sophmore at North High School, in Hyoga, Japan. Truth be told, Kyon is a nickname. I suppose that isn't relevant. In any case, Haruhi Suzumiya, the president of our club has worked out a sponsorship with an American company. In exchange for mentioning the US release of the The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya DVDs, we get supplies for our next student film. I heard it was a box of costumes and a few video tapes. I don't want to think of what kind of costumes that Haruhi will make poor Asahina wear after the last time. In fact, I never really wanted to join this club in the first place. Well, that doesn't concern the rest of you. Please click on the video to see the announcement.

The Beginning
Current mood: shocked

I have a cold so after yesterday's post I went to sleep. When I woke up today and logged into the ASOS club page...I was stunned. I feel I should warn all of you nice Americans. Haruhi is...well, she might be reading this. In any case I'm going to have Nagato figure out a way to host the movie that you see on http://asosbrigade.com here on the club page. Normally I might ask someone from the Computer Club to help me out...but, for reasons I rather not get into, I don't think I should. Since I'm doing updates on this page from the SOS Brigade's computer, I'll try to log in once in a while to give all of the ASOS Brigade members updates. Honestly, it is a boring club. We sit around, drink tea, play games...well, there are those moments every once in a while...nevermind, you wouldn't believe me if I told you.

Movie is Up
Current mood: accomplished

Nagato figured out how to put the movie up. Its 2AM here, so I'm going home. I'll double-check it when I get back in on Monday. Good night!

the mentioned vid is ont he http://asosbrigade.com site so you can see it there

 Update
New on the asos site

The source code comments on http://asosbrigade.com have been updated. Here they are, stripped out of the source:
Code:
<!-- They have absolutely no clue what's going to happen soon, do they -->
<!-- No, they don't -->
<!-- This shall be quite enjoyable -->
<!-- You love controversy, don't you -->

There's also some text that's "hidden". It says "Don't just think outside of the box... Escape from it!", right above the picture of Haruhi. :
Code:
<tr>
      <td>
      <center><small><small style="font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;"><small><font color="#ffcccc">Don't just think
outside of the box... Escape from it!</font></small></small></small><br>
      <img alt="TMoHS Image" src="01-15-07-MLK.gif"></center>
      <br>
      <div style="text-align: center;"><small><a href="http://www.myspace.com/asosbrigade" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;">Join the
ASOS Brigade at MySpace!</span></a>

      </small></div>

      </td>

    </tr>

The image name for the Haruhi is "01-15-07-MLK.gif", which is weird because 01/15/07 was the last Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I'm pretty suspicious, and it's really piquing my curiousity. What does MLK have to do with Haruhi? I also wonder if it's been stegged or whatever; is there an easy way to tell?

(I'm new to this ARG thing, so I hope you'll forgive me if I sound a bit newbish.)
