I don't know. All my research tells me Gil Sans is way older than Comic sans.

And I already tried Baskerville Old Face. But didn't work.

I tried WolfHawk's list

Quote:
1. Garamond
2. Cooper Old Style
3. Times
4. Comic Sans
5. Optima
6. Gill Sans
7. Baskerville Old Face

And it didn't work. Out of credits again (this has been happening a lot) so somebody else will need to try Pied Piper's suggestion of switching #1 to Sabon

Should be Sabon

Just in case some reads just your message, notgordian, I wanted to make sure that they got the spelling right: Sabon.

It's funny in a way--you made me realize that I'd spelled Napoleon with an "a" instead of an "o" as the last vowel, and now you've done the sme thing with Sabon. Smile

Fixed the typo.

This "Typo" (how ironic) was due in part to a misspent youth watching Samurai Pizza Cats, Spider-man and X-Men. Seriously, awesome production company. Jetix and 4Kids couldn't hold a candle to them. /rant

"Typo" typo

That's so funny, notgordian--I didn't even catch the irony until you mentioned it. Maybe I should get some sleep. Coffee

Arkaham more info please

Just caught your reply. Could you let us know what the date is that you've gotten for Gil Sans, and let us know from whence it came? If we have got it positioned incorrectly, let's get it fixed! Wink

I've been through the Identifonts website and come up with the following - it's the same fonts but with potentially more accurate dates.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. Sabon 1967
2. Cooper Old Style 1919-24
3. Times New Roman 1931-5
4. Comic Sans 1995
5. Optima 1958
6. Gill Sans 1928-32
7. Baskerville Old Face 1768, 1992 (the site gives both dates)

Bearing in mind the puzzle asks for the earliest possible dates, that would give the following two possible orders:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. Baskerville Old Face
2. Cooper Old Style
3. Gill Sans
4. Times New Roman
5. Optima
6. Sabon
7. Comic Sans

or

1. Cooper Old Style
2. Gill Sans
3. Times New Roman
4. Optima
5. Sabon
6. Baskerville Old Face
7. Comic Sans

If anyone would like to try these then feel free - it'll be a week before my dark half has saved up enough credits to try them herself Bang Head .

Thanks Arkaham - sorry they didn't work. I'm completely out of ideas now. I've double and triple- checked those fonts and I'm about as sure as I can be that they're correct. The only things I can think of are:

1. The PMs have used a completely different research source than those we've used and so have come up with different names/dates than those we've found.
2. The question's wrong - they don't actually want the fonts in date order, they just want us to name the fonts in the order they're seen in.

Other than that, I'm stumped Bang Head . I have to say I'm really starting to lose patience with this game - the credit system and the picky answer formatting system are just too frustrating - I thought ARGs were meant to be fun Rolling Eyes .

From what I garnered of the question, you don't put in the names of the fonts. You seemingly have to order the numbers of the fonts according to date, and put them in the answer boxes in chronological order. That's my take on it, considering that none of the other methods have worked.

I agree that's what the question implies, friscodude; however, after we'd all tried that a few times, Arkaham got this reply on the incorrect solve page:

Quote:
Don't be ridiculous. Maybe Nettleton does need to hold your hand? She is requesting the NAMES of the fonts

You have received positive Karma.

Since then we've all been trying the names rather than the numbers.

I'm sending in a bug report

This really is a bug, I think. I think you're correct, echidna--they obviously are using a different resource than we are. I'm going to use my publishing credentials (I've been dealing with identifying fonts for the last ten years), and let them know about the discrepancy. I think we've lost too many credits and had too little to show for it, and they need to understand that we are all getting frustrated enough to want to chuck this game. That ought to at least make them realize that they're going to start losing players if they aren't more reasonable in what they are asking us to do.

Anyone else who cares to submit a bug report to help lend credence to mine is welcome to it.

Sent the info, but not as a bug report.

Here's what I sent to corp. We'll see what they have to say.

Quote:
Typo task:

This task is nearly impossible for us. I've spent ten years in the publishing business, and one of my responsibilities has been to identify fonts that are used in publications so that the company I worked for (Houghton Mifflin, one of the big boys) could purchase them and we could use them in designs for texbooks. The textbooks to which I refer use many, many different fonts, and so I'm pretty familiar with how to get fonts, where to find into about them, the lot. In fact, I was one of the people whom people in several different departments would go to for help in identifying fonts. What I'm trying to point out is that I have some serious credentials on this.

The trouble with the task you've given us is that there are too many different companies who have their own versions of the same fonts, and they are all named slightly differently so that the company can legitimately claim copyright on their own font. Even if we had access to the entire character map for a font, we couldn't be sure that it was exactly the font you wanted, because the differences are not that great between the Baskerville Old Face of one font to the Baskerville Lino Oldface of another.

Even identifying the dates of the fonts is problematic. The references vary too widely to reliably be able to do that. Several type houses have pages which explain where a font came from and give a date, but that date is different at a different type house for essentially the same font. And some of those dates don't match such sources as wikipedia.

The agents from my time have been attempting to address this as a group, and we are beyond frustrated. I should warn you that it's sounding to me that people are becoming frustrated enough, because of multiple tries to solve this puzzle with this sort of ambiguousness and the docking of credits and karma while we try to work through this rather unreasonable puzzle that I think some are considering turning their backs on Deus City.

I would suggest refunding all--and I do mean ALL--of the docked karma and credits to agents and accepting answers that vary a bit--or else seeing if you can dig up more information on the fonts in question.

Well according to the newly updated interface, 3 people have solved the task/puzzle. This is making me feel stupid, but alas, I don't have the credits to attempt any more solves.
