Fineshade wood report

Sorry for the delay in posting this, been stupid busy today!
So, last night myself and Aesclepius decided we'd had enough sitting around talking about things, and paid a visit to Fineshade wood.
Our timing could've been better, however, because it was dark when we arrived!

The trip wasn't completely useless thankfully, as we got some pictures of the noticeboard/map.

Here are the photos:
http://www.uniquezero.com/pxc

There are various coloured walking paths around the woods, and there is a list of what to see in different months down the right hand side of the map (more on that later).

Time for spoiler tags!

Assumption:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
CT == Scarlett Kiteway

Lets run with this for now as it lets us use all the red kite stuff later. Smile

To start with...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The colours of the paths match up to most of the gemstones from #031 - End of the Line Smile

Also, some of the months mention our favourite avian species.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Months that mention kites:

May = Emerald = Green
July = Ruby = Red

That leaves:
Topaz, Amethyst, Sapphire and Diamond.

These match up to the orange, dark blue/purple, and blue paths, and, uh, what colour is diamond anyways? :noidea:

Time for a leap:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Let's only use paths that match up to the colours we have left. (and NOT use red or green - there's no green path anyway).

Following what it says on the card, "I hold fast to the amethysts"
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
We start on the purple (which is the Jurassic way - woo!)

"They mingled them with sapphires, so I threw them both away from me. Only one choice remained..."
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
So, not using the red route, we then go until we can ditch the (mixed) purple and blue routes. Straight on where the paths bend to the right as they go into the woods on the south side of the map. This path is a brown "Woodland ride" path - could this be our diamond? Most diamonds have a hint of yellow or brown in them apparently, and it's the only gemstone left. The tenuous bit here is the rejection of red. However, in the section where it should be mixed between red, orange purple and blue, all of the colours EXCEPT red are shown, which makes me think it is right.

"...and from then nothing was right"
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
So we turn left at the T junction, and then left again somewhere further on maybe? There's two more left turns we could make, but 'not right' doesn't rule out going straight on. My guess is that the quadruped will present itself along there somehow. Maybe a horse or dog sign or statue or something, although nothing is shown on the map. http://www.uniquezero.com/pxc/spoiler/route-highlighted.jpg This picture shows the proposed route.

There's a LOT of pines around there and some we saw looked exactly like the photo from LoB, but although we tried to get a photo it was way too dark for the feeble camera Sad

So, who's up for a weekend trip down/up/across/over there?

Great Minds

I went this morning. Could have done with your advice as that was perhaps the one route I didn't try. Had to do it at frog march speed so not much time for reflection. Did feel a bit like needles and haystacks. Not sure, but I think I started on that route and there was some heavy forestry work going on with diggers. I got the impression I was in the way, and was directed another route. In any case I was trying to stay on the Jurassic Way, not having thought about it in detail, though I was aware of the passage you quote. One bit of advice would be to take a print out of the fence post squiggle, as there are a lot of posts there. Lots of mud and the fun of "shooting today".

I think...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
if they make a point of saying "nothing was right" it definitely involves a left turn somewhere (otherwise why bother only mentioning that it was not right?)

Also, on the map picture you included, I can't seem to find any location for
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Rockingham Barn, where the "list of months" tells you you can find the Red Kites. It says it's open from Easter to July, and I'll bet you anything that's where you'll find this "quadruped."

Remember, when looking for the "Quadruped:"
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It'll probably be some inanimate object that is SHAPED like a "quadruped with its middle leg stuck out proudly." That or a sign.

And when you find it:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Just walk up to its leg and take 20 paces in the direction its leg is pointing. If you can look straight up and see the view in that first photo at LoB, that's where you dig.

Yes, best of luck.

...although, I still haven't discounted the possibility that I might stow away upon the next plane to cross the Atlantic, and see if I might be able to beat someone to it. Cool

Much as I hate to be a doomsayer, I keep imagining V or some other Third Power agent lying in wait right by the cube, waiting for the first cube hunter to come by...I doubt he'd be that sloppy, of course, but the image is stuck in my head.

Also: does it strike anyone else as a little odd that ramsfan found a lot of digging going on in the area? So soon after the location's been narrowed down?

quadruped

Didn't find the barn either, so there may be an unknown quadruped. However there are horse riding signs which consist of a rider sitting up proudly on a horse. I took that to be the sign, but there were a few around.

Just to give a bit more information on the woods (from Wikipedia)
Quote:
Rockingham Forest is a former medieval hunting forest located between the towns of Corby and Kettering in the county of Northamptonshire in England.

Managed by the Forestry Commission it includes:

* Southey Wood
* Wakerley Great Wood
* Bedford Purlieus National Nature Reserve
* Fineshade Wood
* Fermyn Woods

It is famous for its population of Red Kites.

And on Rockingham
Quote:
Rockingham is a village and civil parish in the Corby district of Northamptonshire, England. It is just to the north of Corby town itself, on the A6003 road to Uppingham, and close by the border with Leicestershire and Rutland, near to Great Easton and Caldecott.

The village is the site of Rockingham Castle, Rockingham Forest, but not Rockingham Motor Speedway. It gives its name to the title Marquess of Rockingham.

Bear with me on this - I think it might link up with "The Most Noble", but not in relation to the butterflies.

Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham was a Knight of the Garter. The Most Noble Order of the Garter is an English order of chivalry dating from mediæval times. It is the world's oldest national order of knighthood, and the pinnacle of the British honours system.

There is also be an extremely tenuous connection to a quadruped: in 1958, the band Lord Rockingham's XI had a number one hit with the song "Hoots Mon", the lyrics of which contain the line "Hoots mon, there's a moose loose aboot this hoose". And a moose is, of course, a quadruped. Well, I did say it was tenuous! Laughing

i'm tempted to go downa s well as off until Monday. Yet its a bit of a trip. So i called the Forestry Commission who were a bit confused but had previous called about it and found people looking for it last night.

they think if it was buried in the wood it would have been done without permission which i doubt would happen.

They are going to check and see if there has been permission for any items to be buried there.

Just back from Fineshade wood
Still no cube...

I've just got back from tramping round the wood with Jaeneas and Anna (just happened to meet them just after I arrived - hi again!!), he might still be there but I had to go back to work. Between us we've been down every single path on the map (and a few off it) and had no luck. The bird hide he found yesterday seemed to be the most promising lead, but it's in fairly open ground and while there are some feasible-looking trees nearby, it's easy to see there's nothing like the other two photos within 20 ammots.

So I would guess that we haven't quite found the right woods yet. I would imagine that any of the woods in rockingham forest might have similar looking maps that might make more sense.

Back to looking at RNA codons for me then....

just out of interest, most of the FC sites use the same notation for paths on all of their site maps, which can be found on the forestry website.

Well I'm going to stick my neck out and say that I don't think its in Fineshade wood.

Some of the logic behind this is a stretch, it was a great find to discover that the strata was Jurassic and the map of this area narrowed the search down to about 200 miles, but I think it's too big a leap to assume that because the strata is Jurassic that the path is the Jurassic way.

I think the Jurassic part was the second part of the clue and no more (form the strata, find the era, follow the way, find the cube) and there to simply show us an area where the cube is, and then we have to narrow it down by solving the other clues and find the correct way.

If we think back to the original clue :

Five fingers point:

Half the World - Northern Hemisphere
Realm - UK
Region - Somewhere within the jurassic strata marked on the map
Feature ???
Last mystery ???

We're still a long way from solving the last 2 parts, the cube could be in any wood in the jurassic strata part of the country. Looking at the pictures it doesn't really tell you much and I don't think the Gyvann card and clues are as important as everyone seems to think, as in the last part it says about the light being on him and about the quadruped, well, last time I checked when you're in a wood (and looking on the picture) it seems like the cube is in the middle of the forest and not near the edge, so there would be no light anyway, and I don't think they have statues of quadrupeds in the middle of the woods lol.

Of course someone might prove me wrong it just seems like everyone is so desperate to find the cube that someone had an idea and everyone is following it, Fineshade wood has been checked by several people with no success, maybe because it's just not the right place . . .

And no sadly, I don't have anything better to offer, I think the 14 letter clue needs to be solved and that will be a big help

Where did Fineshade Woods come from?

I'm probably asking for a fish over the head, but where did the idea to look around Fineshade Wood come from? Did I totally miss something somewhere? Neutral

Well it's not just me I hope but I'm a bit annoyed that the cube is in england but I suppose it's where the majority of players r and being anywhere else wouldn't make a difference so I disagree with myself.
Here is my idea for all you Englandish peeople or anyone that isn't a kid (damn time) go to Fineshade woods or somewhere else if found out. Take the tree pictures enlarged and a metal detector. When you find a cubelike object post it to.....Nah just kiddin but not about all the stuff before the post majig......I think we can't find it without solving all the cards except riemann (Dammit) and then those email yokeys give us the final clue(s) and maybe If I feel like it I will come over to this country beside me........You better watch out. FRB UUU?

Aesclepius and I went to the woods again this afternoon. Still no cube Sad but we did find one of the raised hides off to the left of the path we'd decided on. It's also v close (~10m) to the corner of a pine area that looks right for the trees photo. There's a decent aerial photo here:

http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=52.572392~-0.548045&style=a&lvl=18&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000

The hide is the white square in the centre of that photo, it's fairly visible from the path too. I'll post phone photo's when i get them transferred onto the PC. Somehow forgot to take my proper camera Sad
