[puzzle] #80 Cruel and unusual

"Once upon a time, a particularly cruel dictator with an overactive imagination devised a punishment for four of his prisoners. He buries the four in a line up to their heads in the ground, with a wall separating them. they were all buried facing the wall so they could only see what was in front of them, so Dave can see Bella and Charlie, and Charlie can see Bella but not Dave.

the dictator then placed hats on top of the prisoners' heads as in this picture. The prisoners knew that there were two black hats and two white hats, but they didnt know the colour of their own hat. If one of the prisoners could correctly say what colour is on their hat, they'd all be freed.

Which prisoner ended up saving the day?

And the back of the card:

" Mobius strip part 1
'it might not be the real Mobius Strip, buts it'll do,' are the words famous architech Denise Ghali is said to have made upon seeing the completeled strip from the air for the first time. Completed only 5 year ago in 263, the figure of eight strip of raised land off the coast was one of the more controversial projects begun by the MDC for the mobius Area regeneration project, but its sheltered marine lake and beautiful parks have won over most critics."

Are you sure that's the answer?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Because I solved the card when I got it to check my answer, and I'm fairly sure that I typed Charlie. The logic being that Charlie knows from Dave's silence that Dave can see Charlie and Bella have different colour hats (if they had the same colour, he'd know his own colour and save the day). Hence Charlie knows that his hat is the opposite colour to Bella. If my logic doesn't work and I typed the answer in wrong, then I'm impressed with my capability of making the correct error (and I've done it before).

That much is correct but surely Dave could still have a black hat. He looks in front and sees 1 black and 1 white. So his could still be either black or white. I'm struggling to see the logic in this one, ....its been a heavy day and my heads turned to mash. Confused

No, he looks in front of him and sees one white-there's a wall in between Andrea and Bella.

I'm refering to Dave. He looks forward and sees Bella and Charlie. 1 white & 1 black. Charlie therefore knows that his hat must be black. But still Daves could be black or white. What am I missing here apart from my marbles?

We've been asked to say who can work out what colour their hat is. Nothing else.

There's no need to be concerned that Dave doesn't know what colour his hat is.

Rolling Eyes No wonder I'm having problems with the logic I thought they all had to name their hat colours.

Thanks Chris next time I'll read the question proparly Smile

We now know how to get out of yet another unrealistic scenario. Wink

Though after Charlie works out what colour hat he has, bella can work out what she has on, as it would be the other colour to Charlie's hat.

Anyone got any thoughts on what the ACB3 written in white (just below Andrea) in the grass means?? I thought at first it was puzzle architect, but then noticed Anna's sig. is already on the card up the side...

Anna is the architect, but ACB3 appears to be the sig of the guest artist.
