Advice for a 16 year old kid.

Hello everyone, I'm looking towards the PPC comunity for some much needed advice in the world of the PPC we all love. I have been following PPC since the first firebox messages (with a few gaps here and there), and it has been alot of fun but I'm having some serious consideration about playing season two. It basically runs down to this...
Im 16 and all my earnings come from my paper round Wink . Through season one I baught a few boosters, then a few more, untill i had all of the cards you really could get from them, then i started trading on PPCT and finally went on to get my last silvers from ebay untill I had 256/256. Overall I spent about 1/4 of my years wages on the game. However, I do not really have much knoledge of the world and many of the puzzles are only posible to me through google and alot of help. (I do however enoy the logic puzzles like RGB and road trip). Also I sit my GSCEs in about 4 months.

So I do not ask for your simpathy, but just your honest advice as to what you think may be the best thing to do in my situation. Thankyou all for your coments and I'll let you know what I deside later. Many thanks, Adam G.

All I can say is (and its probably not the sort of advice you want to hear) its your own choice Razz

I'll be doing the same as season 1 with season 2 (19 year old uni student) buying cards on launch events and then special offers, probably no more and then trading to fill some gaps, but I never hope to be able to get a full collection because it just costs so much. No matter how much I would like one.

In your situation, I would probably buy a few packs, trade what I can, and maybe ask for more packs (or money towards some) for birthday/ Christmas/ doing-well-at-exams presents. But, as Poozle said, it's really up to you.

And (whilst painfully obvious, and I apologise in advance if I sound like your mother, or teachers!) make sure you don't spend too much time on PXC - your GCSEs are important, and at the end of the day, PXC is only a game.

Oh, and don't worry about not getting some of the puzzles - there are too many that have baffled me, and I'm 28!

Thanks for the fast replys. Your helped me remeber a stratagy I saw a player use back in Season 1 (Those were the days Razz ). Think I might go for Red-Black and leave the silvers to the pros. And MYF, thanks for the concern. Any other comments still welcome, have a good weekend everyone. Adam G.

Yup, should have definitely mentioned GCSEs being important. I was lucky, perplexcity started properly just after my A-Levels so I didn't really have to worry as much about exams (well, until uni Razz).

Right now I work, which makes fitting PXC in interesting, but next year it'll be ok; back to Uni for me, teacher training! Lots of late nights on the way.

i'm 29, work full time, and you still have a hell of a better collection than i do!!! in Season 2, i'm just going to try and pace myself, and get red-black.... keep what warm up puzzles i can, and hey, if i get a silver out of a pack, that's a plus! weve got 4-5 months to try and get everything you want. i'm going to try to save up for a box. i keep buying pack after pack, then i would have spent enough to buy a box, but i've only realy got 20 something packs. its your choice, i get buyers remorse all the time from crap i get. damned rumble roses xx. Mad kid when i was 16, i put 1/2 of everything i made into the bank. that was for college. the other 1/2, i was 16, didn't have to pay for food, rent, hell even much gas; i spent it on everydamnedfailedvideogamesystemever. and a neo geo. you have a bike route, you manage your money enough to get 256/256 (you, youbastard Wink ) get what you want~ Cool

I think all of the important things have been already said but I am pretty much in the same boat as you, but with A-Levels. It is very easy to get carried away and drop everything you are doing but you have to remember it is only a game, your GCSE's come first. Also, even though Perplex city is a relatively new type of unique game, I am almost certain that there will probably be many more games like it in years to come, this is just the beginning.

Who knows, there may be more seasons to this game to come.

Yes ..very?

well first of all I advise you to spell adviCe correct..just looked funny ...

And about continuing. If you like it you should continue with it but if your finding it a hassle with birthdays and everything else you should just leave plus you don't need the cards to find the cube the only reason I coudn't have got it the damned atlantic or whatever sea is between Ireland and England....Personally I'm twelve and I get €7 pocket money Evil or Very Mad but I like it so I've decided to continue with S2 and hopefully get all the cards (there better not be any more of those special ones)...So...You decide

Well, I'm 10 years old and I think you should do what you like.

(Okay - I ACT like a 10 year old, how about that?) Wink

Seriously, you need to set your priorities and at your age, I wouldn't sink too much money into anyone thing. I see my nieces and nephews kill their parents for this thing or that thing or this lesson or that sport only to stop it 3 - 6 months after they start. In the end, ask yourself "Why am I doing this and is this what I really want to do"; if you don't get a good answer, I would play a bit but not strive for a "live in the game" experience.

You're young! Have fun! Be yourself! May the Force be With You! Live Long and Prosper. Etc Etc Etc

Welcome to my world. (No, really.)

[Warning: the following is not me bragging about anything.]

I was 16 a week ago (Happy Birthday to me...), and I never once bought a card in my life. I'd gotten all my cards from live events I was lucky enough to attend (see: one), and from the kindness of other players. I've done all I can to have fun and play without spending money (sorry, Mind Candy Confused ), and I've gotten as much support from the community as I can ask for.

[End warning period.]

My point is, if you're devoted enough to hunt down all the cards, go for it; if you have other pressing priorities, then save your money and either to take the kindness of your fellow PXC community members for some extra greens and blues, or don't even bother. The cards, while very clearly led to finding the Cube, were inessential. I never wanted to pay money for them, simply because I remembered every other collecting fad I ever went through, and how I ended up spending way too much money (or rather, making my parents spend too much) to feed the need. You can still play PXC in full; the cards are auxiliary, if very fun. Besides, the information flows fairly freely in UF. Anything that was found on the cards was generally reported, discussed, and analyzed here in public.

All I'm saying is, relax. Whatever you decide, you'll be fine, because it's all about fun and community spirit and whatnot. Very Happy

If Season 2 takes as long as Season 1 - which it won't - but even if it takes a year, you will be able to follow along at your own pace. I jumped in and out of the game. Mind Candy does a good job of keeping a "story so far" thread going and I am sure the players will keep the wiki going as well.

Because this game lasts so long, it is different from other games in intensity levels. You don't have to worry that you will miss everything if you let it go for long periods of time. Also, you can always check the boards to see what events may be coming up so you can participate.

As for buying cards, that is up to you, but I did notice that after cards were released you could buy a series of say Wave 3 red or orange or whatever color cards for not that much money. You might buy a couple of packs and then get other cards for less from dealers just trying to get rid of them. And, lots of players just gave away their extra lower level cards, you may find people willing to give you some just to keep the clutter level down. Smile

Indeed. One way to get cards is to beg them from people on the forums, or make friends with other players locally - for instance: because I apparently have more money than sense (and very very little of either) I bought a box of wave 4 cards. Once I'd nabbed and traded as much as possible, I gave all my spare cards to a couple of friends who were just getting started.

So yeah, there are people who will give a fair few cards away for nowt Smile

Thanks for the adviCe everyone. I have come to the following result. I'm guna save up for a box, and use a voucher Wink and then go for red to black, unless it isnt unreasonable in the future to try and go for them all, but that is unlikely. Also I'm now determined not to let this get in the way of my exams and then when summer comes round I can do some serious solving. Thanks again. Adam G.

You could also try ebay as there are usually several people selling them, and there arer a few websites that sell individual cards if you need to complete your collection. Also, if you wait until season 2 has got going prices tend to fall for people selling cards as more are on the market Wink
