I'm on ntl dial-up, which cuts off automatically every so often, so it's more likely to be a whoops-where's-he-gone? chat...

I can fill in with some improvised poetry while you reconnect. We're nothing if not resourceful. Smile

I just skimmed it over but a few highlights:

Mind Candy knew Kurt and Violet stole the Cube from the beginning. (haven't thought that through exactly -does that mean Sente knew? or did they mean in a META sense Wink )

Collaborative puzzle solving works well but often good ideas get shouted down and people go off on the wrong track. (personally, I think this is the most interesting comment)

No big prize for the next season.

The ARG will be even bigger and better. But it is difficult to coordinate the cards and the ARG. (Note: Adrian isn't thrilled with the term ARG -not sure why- and he says TINAG isn't everything. )

Cards have a lot of leadtime. No extra points for solving faster or more cards. The distribution of cards will improve based on what was learned from Season 1.

The use of the risk pieces was obscure (heh, like we didn't know that)

What I missed finding at Jones Beach was a box of business cards. I didn't know anything about geocaching then or how things were hidden, but thanks to chippy for all his help on the phone with that attempt. Smile

I just read through the logs myself and they were definitely interesting. All that bitching and moaning I, and others, did long ago apparently didn't fall onto deaf ears. Adrian admits to a lot of the perceived problems throughout the chat, and claims they've worked a lot of them out.

From the logs wrote:
<_izzy_> HerringHale asks: "do you notice any difference between UK and US and other nationality players? in terms of what they solve or participate in?"
<Adrian> I think there's a cultural difference, yes
<Andrea> I've said before, I felt that American players were a little more aggressive

I loved that part. In a country with a 2.6 million man military, the ability to own firearms, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, all I can say is: Yup.

From the logs wrote:
<David> our lift engineer in the last live event made a distinction…
<David> he said the americans demanded better service.

So when I went over to London during Christmas, I was shocked at the poor quality of waiters and hostesses. Over here, all serving/selling professions are tipped/commissioned. If your service sucks, you don't make any money. So waiters constantly come by your table and fill up your drink (free refills), stop by after your food comes just to make sure you're alright, and at the end bring your bill to you in a timely manner. You don't have to leave or pay immediately, but at least they give it to you without you having to hound them down about it. Demanding better service is essentially a way of saying: "I want to be here, but you're making it hard to me to justify why I'm giving you money when the service sucks. So if it doesn't improve, I'm going elsewhere, and you get no $$$." Maybe this is just a strange cultural difference, but I really was surprised the UK doesn't operate the same way.

From the logs wrote:
<Adrian> And I would like to think that most people play because they enjoy the game and the story, not because of the prize

Well... that's mostly true. The prize, I think, was what motivated a lot of people to play PXC that were outside the UK. The puzzle cards not really having any inherent value, distribution issues, and all the events taking place during evening GMT hours (aka, during normal work hours here in the US) made it really hard to justify playing outside of the prize. Honestly, I think I'm just going to be spectator during Season 2 because of those same reasons. Love the game, but oh.so.very.hard.to.play.here .

I have to admit, I'm really disappointed that the Cube turned out to be in the UK. From the moment the last clue was given, even if an American hopped on the next plane out, and went in a near straight line to where the Cube was buried, I think they would have been trying to wrestle it out of Rand0m's hands. There really wasn't a chance for someone in the US to find it. So booooo to the claims of "US friendly". However, on the flip side of this coin, I have to say I couldn't be more happy that Rand0m found it. You're one of the nicest guys on here, and someone that didn't get involved in the popularity quibbles that tore the community into two camps. You've been dedicated and nice as long I can remember, so I can't imagine a finer person winning the prize. Congrats again Rand0m! Now onto the next PXC puzzle: trying to figure out Rand0m's banking password Wink

Just finished reading the chat logs. Wish I could have attended! Very Happy You guys asked great questions, and MC was super cool!

Weren't there any Americans who could ask: Will you ever bring PXC more to the US?

As Ashin pointed out, it was a little sad that the Cube was impossible for us to reach (although I think it would have been uncool to put it anywhere else, considering the game was primarily British). I wanted so often to attend a live event or something, but Florida's a bit of a drive from NYC or Cali... or London. Wink

What I think MC needs is a nice, warm, sunny US office just moments from Disney World. Cool How's that sound, eh, MC? Eh? I'd be your biggest faaaaannn...

Laughing Ah, well.

/me backs away from the scary man with the sniper icon...

We, of course, have tea, which can be just as aggressive when deployed effectively.

Well, I guess it's unlikely someone from the US would have actually dug it up, but don't forget Team Alice, which came very close - British diggers roaming the countryside taking instruction via cellphones from team members on three continents.

Incidentally, I'd be happy to do another chat at a more US-friendly time, in #syzygy, if people would be interested?

Aw thanks, *blush*. But I did take a fairly public position when all that was happening, and not a subtle one either, which has led to a few ticklish moments since I was named as the winner. Nothing that hasn't been dealt with by that old stand-by, talking quietly in private, but it had me worried for a while. Water under the bridge now, though, water under the bridge.
