New forum, and new post:
Quote:
Me, I enjoy Tool quite a bit! My favorite song by them is parabol. What about you?

That actually fits with something I've been noticing about the sound files: they seem to contain parabolic shapes...

Here are some guys who are associated with "parabola":
Quote:
The parabola was studied by Menaechmus who was a pupil of Plato and Eudoxus. He attempted to duplicate the cube, namely to find side of a cube that has a volume double that of a given cube. Hence he attempted to solve x3 = 2 by geometrical methods.
In fact the geometrical methods of ruler and compass constructions cannot solve this (but Menaechmus did not know this). Menaechmus solved it by finding the intersection of the two parabolas x2 = y and y2 = 2x.

Euclid wrote about the parabola and it was given its present name by Apollonius. The focus and directrix of a parabola were considered by Pappus.

Pascal considered the parabola as a projection of a circle and Galileo showed that projectiles follow parabolic paths.

Gregory and Newton considered the properties of a parabola which bring parallel rays of light to a focus.

The pedal of the parabola with its vertex as pedal point is a cissoid. The pedal of the parabola with its focus as pedal point is a straight line. With the foot of the directrix as pedal point it is a right strophoid (an oblique strophoid for any other point of the directrix). The pedal curve when the pedal point is the image of the focus in the directrix is a Trisectrix of Maclaurin.

The evolute of the parabola is Neile's parabola. From a point above the evolute three normals can be drawn to the parabola, while only one normal can be drawn to the parabola from a point below the evolute.

If the focus of the parabola is taken as the centre of inversion, the parabola inverts to a cardioid. If the vertex of the parabola is taken as the centre of inversion, the parabola inverts to a Cissoid of Diocles.

The caustic of the parabola with the rays perpendicular to the axis of the parabola is Tschirnhaus's Cubic.

From http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Curves/Parabola.html

Lots of things to try with those.

I'm going by the new post from Forrest as well as my best understanding of the term "proceeds" from the earlier solve.

René Descartes liked parabolas a lot! He's one of my favorite thinkers too! But it has nothing to do with this conversation, silly me.

The "rule of signs" comes to mind, only because of the parabola motif... If quadradic functions become a part of the next solve, I'm officially out of my mental depth Wink

An enthusiastic oog nod to the pm, though, not only for the damn fine music taste, but also knowing who Alex Grey is Very Happy

Well... Other than the fact that it's got 10 unique characters and would indicate a decimal beginning, I'm not getting very far with it.

It's a bit long for the forum, but since ya asked Wink

I'm glad people are taking the initiative and reading my blogs, I do have a lot to say.
Right now I'm currently working under a NASA scientist, and we are researching interstellar "junk" and whether or not there will be future collisions with the planet.
I did side work for the deep impact project, where a small probe was launched into
an asteroid. We felt such great relief in knowing that we could possibly destroy or
move the orbit of a dangerous asteroid out of the path of our planet. I did some study
on the brown dwarf "Nemesis" and have come to the conclusion that it is of no threat to us at all. It doesn't even exist! As for a twin earth residing on the far side of the sun, there's more fiction about that than anything else. Why do you think the scientific community scoffs at such reports? My name is Forrest Evern and in time you will forget all of this nonsense about Nemesis. I promise you that.

It was an ascii shift, then several conversions through decimal and hex to ascii.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Keep searching the sounds, you're bound to find something sooner or later. I cannot hint any more, Homeland Security has my computer tapped. They do not want what's known to be made public. This is an ongoing struggle, so please bear with us.

Edit: we really need a sound guru to help us here, I think. I can do basic stuff in Audacity, but I'm just not trained to hear/see patterns in the sound.

First off - nice job! And secondly, just for future reference - what tool did you use to shift since the usual caesar cipher doesn't do it? And how many shifts before realizing you had the right dec to convert? (still trying to learn the ropes here)

ETA - what kills me is that I've been a sound designer for over 10 years and I can't find a discernable pattern in the audio....

For the sake of any newbies & even some of us veterans with less than wonderful puzzle solving skills, it is perfectly okay to show & describe the steps of the solve so we can all learn some new skills!

From Forrest's blog:

Quote:
Sometimes it's better to figure out what a song is before dissecting it, my fellow astronomers.

That's a bit of a relief as I was considering plotting the notes on a graph and using

Back to trying to figure out the names/authors of the tunes. For me at least, as the multiple Coronas are beginning to take their toll.

The ASCII shift referenced above (Good job, BTW) is also called a ROT-47.
So, using a converter, like this (There are many on the net)

You get a good set of digits to feed into a Decimal decoder like the one posted, yesterday

Paste into the decimal box and see what comes up in the others.
In this case, the only "good" looking values appeared in the ASCII box and appeared to be decimal again, only in a better range.
Paste that result back into the decimal box and check, again.
Now the values in the ASCII box all look like good Hex values.
Copy them over to the Hex box and decode. Voila. The ASCII is plaintext, now.

Well, I didn't actually use a tool, this time: I just noticed that ` and _ immediately preceded the lowercase alphabet in ascii and did a replace by hand. But, were I to do one, I'd probably use excel: if you put each letter in a seperate cell on the first row (you needn't do all of them, just enough to get recongnizable plaintext), you can use this formula in the rows underneath:

=CHAR(MOD(CODE(A182),255)+1)

(Paste it into A2 and select the rest, then fill right and down)

One row should stand out as fairly obviously plaintext. Although it doesn't actually work as well in this case since the spaces are uncoded.

(Edit for typo. Embarassed Also, are ROTs confined to the alphabet? I wasn't aware ascii was involved.)

First, thanks Rogi and nin for the heads up, I just added a tool beyond caesar for shifting!

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ROT13
Quote:
ROT47 uses 94 characters instead, from ! (the exclamation mark, ASCII code 33) to ~ (the tilde, ASCII code 126), rotating them by an offset of 47.

If you like Tool it should be easy to tell what I'm playing. I do enjoy the piano.

Think I hear "The Patient" in quaint.wav, any other tool fans around? If it was nin I could identify any sequence for any track (yes, even burn) but I'm still trying to track down the tools songs, starting with "Lateralus" and workin' my way down. I see a pm smacking himself in the forehead with disbelief at this very moment...

ETA - I know the pieces fit cause I watched them fall away... yeah, still no dice...
