[OVERALL] Appreciation :)
Game Ended: Successfully Concluded

That was an awesome ARG. Hopefully it wasn't the end!

Well done to Hazel and everyone else who worked on that ARG!

TINAG!

To borrow a probably overused Britishism, it was smashing! I loved every minute. But I *still* want to know what was up with that Erwin and Wilson image!

EDIT: And I am so disgusted at myself that I was asleep or otherwise occupied when the end of the game came around!

I echo that sentiment! I felt like the endgame should've taken place Live, rather than solved early like this while I was too busy nuking people in Supreme Commander...

Still - feedback for next time, right? There are some things I didn't like, but all of them outweighed by what was brilliant. I'm going to fill my feedback form in now and buy a timehole mug.

Isn't it awful? People just don't realize the time and effort it takes to be a superhero, do they?

Here's my feedback on the game (already submitted this using the form) so my appreciation is out in the public domain Smile

Quote:
Firstly, the negative:
Until I saw that Hazel did the voices, I was ready to complain about the extremely dodgy voice-acting in the radio broadcasts. We could tell it was the same person doing all of the voices, and that the accent was put-on - it also sounded an awful lot like someone had a clothes-peg on their nose. Simply put, when you had such brilliant talent as Pat and Dave on tap, it seemed a shame to then go and ruin it with the ham acting in the radio clips. In retrospect though, I appreciate the cameo.

Character development - I felt it was a little on the shallow side as far as the characters went. Right until the end, most of us were still unsure about their motives, their background and whether or not to trust them. A small part of that is down to natural ARG-player paranoia - but the fact that it was never resolved fully should've run alarm bells that these people were not as corporeal to us as they could be.

I use the Eva/Keir love angle as an example. I felt like I should've cared a lot more about the both of them - but when you look at the facts, she never actually met the guy, and barely any words were said between them - and yet, the story played out like she'd just lost the most important person in her life, and then a happy reunion during the end. If we had seen more interaction between the two, it would've been easier to buy into and as a player, I would've been much more emotionally vested in the game.

My final complaint is the Endgame itself. Now I partially blame carmenmiranda for being an absolute genius, but the whole thing ended far too quickly. I was only away from the computer for 2 hours after the final email was sent, and the whole thing had concluded without me. After such a successful live event, and two pretty exciting live chats, I expected more. I would've preferred it if we could've located the over-ride, but then have had to wait for Frankie. We could've all been gathered together, right before the deadline, in order to collaboratively disable the security system, and send Frankie in to rescue them - which we could then have watched unfold in pseudo-realtime. It was a good ending, but just the delivery was anti-climactic.

And now for the praise - of which there is a LOT.
The game start was perfectly executed. The anonymous email... the MMS... the answering machine... it was all executed with such perfection, and directed so intrusively to the player, that it meant we really had no option but to become completely engrossed in the game from day one. If you receive that much information in such a short space of time, you feel obligated to act on it.

The pacing was perfect. There were no dull moments, no lull in activity, and everything flowed perfectly together.

The puzzles were a pleasing mix of simple and complex, which targeted all abilities. The fact that I was receiving information before other people, and actually able to contribute towards solutions - even if it was just with ideas rather than hard puzzle-crunching - meant that I didn't feel left behind or alienated, like I have with every other ARG I've been involved in. Most of them are simply too hard for me to follow. Once you've been active in helping come up with solve, it again increases your loyalty and interest, and you become more invested with the game still.

The interactions were brilliant. The personalised email responses were exactly what we wanted to see, and the fact that players comments were even referenced in video clips was THE most rewarding aspect of taking part. Usually an ARG ignored the players, and treats them as a sort of anonymous collective - but here, we actually had the opportunity to make friends with the characters and hold interesting conversations that weren't even game related. It gave us a very real sense that what we were doing was affecting the outcome of the story, and that is the ultimate holy grail of interactive gaming.

The post items were an excellent addition to the game. I've never seen so many physical souvenirs in one ARG before, and they were certainly successful in both increasing the feeling of involvement with the story, and rewarding the player for participation. I especially liked the way that favouritism was applied, and the most active participants rewarded with special extras - such as the birthday cards, and more importantly, the cow that was sent to ThunderWolf with an anal probe. It's the little touches like that which buy you unwavering loyalty.

I've saved the best till last... the Live Event! That was without a doubt the highlight of the game, and I would gladly travel miles and miles to do it all over again. I've never had so much fun, and it was all executed with the most incredible professionalism. The bag lady... WOW is all I can say. What a way to kick-start an event! I really felt like I was in a spy movie for a moment there - and then, just as I was starting to buy into it and put my serious face on - PAT AND DAVE! You owe those two BIG TIME. Without them... well... I can't think of anything to say really, because it is utterly impossible to imagine this experience without those two being in it. I don't see how it could've been as good as it was any other way. The things they had us do! I was really holding out for a second one during end-game. In fact, I wouldn't mind having a reunion event, as we all made such good friends on that day, and it will live on forever as an extremely fond memory.

Give yourselves a big pat on the back - and let us see the pictures and video you took!

THANK YOU!

Jon aka Jediwannabe

I was hoping for more interconnected puzzles like what we first found at Keir's page. That was a lot of fun with everybody working on different parts.

I loved this game from afar, many more times than I would have liked. Bravo, Licorice Films et. al.!

(and Bravo players, for being awesome)
