Do you mind if I post that on the HC forums?

I'm in two minds about that - I was originally going to post it in the guest forum at HC but decided not to as I didn't want it to influence the votes (I've been finding people's voting choices extremely interesting). On the other hand, there're plenty of posts there already and the whole reason I wanted to post it in the first place was to encourage debate, help everyone along and stop people from, as I see it, missing the point. And posting it here means posting it to a good portion of the people on the board anyway. Hmm. I'll consult the die.

The die says yes - post it.

I wouldn't worry about it being a cult- while it's got wiggety imagery, there has been very little so far to indicate that it's not on the level, and nobody we've interacted with has at all shown the kind of behaviour commonly found in cults. We're encouraged to seek outside information, for example.

It's most likely either a game or an interactive story.

That being said, I've never been comfortable doing wiggety stuff with icky things as suggested for the ritual, so I'm staying the heck away from it. Even if this is all fake, it's either inviting bad stuff into one's presence, or (from a skeptical point of view) encouraging oneself to think in a harmful manner.

Probably no permanent effects, but definitely not the healthiest idea ever.

Sound. I'm glad the die said as it did: now I want to see the reactions (if any) on the HC board...

This "ritual" is nothing of the sort. It's self-hypnosis and energy work, and it goes against everything I know as a pagan that involves safe working and aspecting. It doesn't make sense and it is NOT a good idea.

For anyone who tries it: I'd ask myself how much I trust the PM and/or Love. Do you believe he's telling the truth? I don't.

To sum up: BAD BAD BAD F-ING IDEA.

What ritual are you talking about? I don't see anything about this. Then again, I never was approved for the happycube forums, even though I registered a while ago.

EDIT: Found access to the Happycube forums and read about it. Also, this ritual somehow ties into the Number 9 which, ilovetofix states, all of this fear and paranoia he developed came from Number Stations.

... And I'm up there with him. Number Stations are creepy. Shocked

EDIT 2: You know... this is starting to give me a '1402' vibe. The short story by Stephen King in his book, Everything's Eventual. Just the entire "Do a 'ritual' about something coming to get you in your room through the door/window/etc" as well as typing Number 9 over a over, like the creature was screaming through the phone.

Yes. This is way too... disorganised for a psychological study or a marketing campaign (unless it changes tact sometime soon).

And it appears as if ilovetofix didn't quite realise how spooked out some people have become by this whole affair, judging from his warning regarding the "summoning" tonight:
http://thehappycube.proboards34.com/index.cgi?board=hackjobjohnny&action=display&thread=1172679716
(which I would love to take part in, but it'll be the middle of the day here in NZ. Hardly the right setting to invoke feelings of fear... Sad )

I can see the point in trying to get people to do this. Making such feelings arise gives people a far greater sense of involvement - after all, it's the creepiness of the videos that turned (most) people on to this in the first place.

Why people are quite so worked up over this is a bit beyond me - fear in a safe environment is quite a thrill - and it's a good way for you to discover your own fears and then have a nice forum to discuss them with people who are interested afterwards. And if you are truly frightened of this entire concept, merely find something else to do. Let the people that enjoy this type of thing enjoy it. Smile

Gah ... I realise this is kind of disjointed, but I'm at work and don't have enough time to sit down and make it gel as nicely as I would like - but I'm pretty sure I got my point across.

My main concern is people getting trapped in the fear. Yes, he is warning those not strong enough to do it, to not do it. But you know people will do it. And what if someone ends up getting hurt?

What is going on here?

Seriously, we should stop fooling around with all this psychological trauma and become focused on finding out what Love is up to rather that having him tells us what he is up to.

So far our reactions are a product of Love's action, when we should be trying to make him react to our actions.

That being said I have no clue what we should do beyond trying to get access to that test board.

I've been lurking for a couple days now, I've actually read all 70+ posts here and all of them over at HC. I was just about to sign up and really get involved, but then love asks for this ritual. Me? No. No. NO.

I've been sleeping with the Bible under my pillow these last few nights Smile...this is some creepy garbage. I've never participated in an ARG before, but after reading up on them, this seems totally different. My first thought was, some creative person is experimenting with a new kind of storytelling...awesome!

But this ritual is cultish. I know people say it's far to well-educated to be a crazy cult, but I think that means underestimating cults. (Also, as an aside, religion's enemy isn't science...a lot of religious people realize their deity created the world and thus, created science...it's only some who see them as opposites. </soapbox>)

If you're participating, take extra care, OK? Have a friend or roommate at standby that you can call in case of emergency, alright? This strikes me as either something very cultish (I'm getting sort of freaked out by the constant reference to Satanic things, especially with the backmasking songs stuff...I had a heart-attack at the whole "little tool shed" thing, that's creepy poo all by itself! Shocked ), or else it is just a game that is threatening to possibly go a little too far.

Of course, I have anxiety disorder Embarassed. I can't imagine doing something like that and not having a panic attack. You guys know what you can handle: Just be extra careful. I'll be thinking good thoughts at you and hoping my imagination and I are just overreacting.

The more I read about this, the more I am convinced that this has a lot to do with the work of Neil Gaiman, especially the Sandman series. Others have said this, but there are too many similarities for me to discount them.

1. The stories - Sandman is all about stories, as Gaiman has said in several interviews, the effect they have on the world. The dark children from certain types of stories.

2. The muses - Calliope figured prominently in Sandman, as she was

3. iliketofix said his master had not seen his sisters since a funeral more than ten years ago, that we were at. The Wake, the end of the Sandman series, was released in 1996 and concerned the funeral for

and it actually says (I can't remember the exact quote) that we were there.

4. The convention of Serial Killers figures prominently into the second Sandman story arc, A Dolls House.

5. I Love to fix specifically mentions the "Seven Never Dying Siblings" in his post here. The Sandman revolved around the Endless, seven siblings who govern the minds of all life.

Edit 5.5. The rest of the above linked post is especially similar to Sandman, where gods and pantheons interacted pretty frequently, but also the plot of another Gaiman book, American Gods.

Edit 5.6. Again in the above post, the man and the book who governs all things could be Destiny, Dream's brother, who forever walks the pathways of a maze with a book that has everything that will ever happen in it.

6. In the Meanwhile thread, he talks about someone who sits on a throne of books. What if this is not Father Paranoia, but Dream, who is called the Prince of stories?

There are probably more connections, or none at all. I may have missed something, but I had to at least see what you all thought.

Hmm, good work there Synthare...

Seems too good to just be a coincidence,

So, i wonder if we are dealing with something by Gaimen, or maybe this was inspired by him...

Probably worth asking about on the HCP forums...

author?

I think what is most interesting is how incredibly fluid the puppet master is. It seems as if he/she is reacting to situations as they present.

I said it was a psychological study in the poll, but I think more accurately it could easily be a writer trying to get a handle on what really creeps people out. So the PM puts stuff out there, and then observes how creeped out people get, and what they do. I mean we get rewards and toy, videos etc.

So it is and isn't an interactive story. Usually an interactive story is written ahead of time, and there are choices and choices. This feels to me more like an experiment in collaboration, where one set of the collaborators (us) don't know we are collaborating.

At this point, I think the ritual is the scariest thing that happened. I mean, people are genuinely scared. Myself included, although I have done stuff like that on more than one occasion. I am scared for everyone else.

Anyway, I think this is very interesting. Not just for the story, but for itself.

Hmm, a lot of ARGs are influenced by the players. And a lot of puppetmasters start out trying to limit the player influence over the story to a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure set of binary choices, I think, but if you read accounts about the design process, most of them end up having to make a few unexpected twists and turns and tap dance a bit because of what players did.

If you're interested, you may also want to check out the ARG(s) associated with LonelyGirl15 -- there was also a great deal of player control/collaboration allowed in that universe.

I don't think anyone here is trying to FORBID others from going through with it- I'm not the boss of anyone but me. But it's something that pings as bad for a lot of us, spritiually, psychologically, or otherwise, and we want to make sure that people are duly warned and know what they may be doing beforehand.

Do I expect major repercussions from this "ritual"? Not really.

Do I think it's a pretty bad idea? Yep.

ETA: I really do think Christian is on to something. I don't have the collection, so I can't back it up, but I'm convinced it's related to that series.
