They took a lot of potential for an interesting game and threw it all away. How does this work as a prank if we thought it was a game? It's odd to me because i would think that creating a story, making 5 videos, fielding questions on a forum nonstop and then just recently concocting a player event would take a lot of effort on their part just to turn it around and say it was a prank. Congrats to them though...on something.

By the looks of it they had to jack it in because people at SA who knew them had pretty much worked it out - someone had spoken on AIM to one of OC_James' friends and things were falling into place. See the last message on:

Worthless excuse. Their game almost died once when they sent sampson out on a wild goose chase, but now calling them out as goons on AIM kills the story? They can rationalize their decision all they want, in the end though it's just a crappy ending to a story/game. No amount of internet bravado can cover that up.

They just got bored.

I can't decide which is bravado - the above, or the getting rumbled. It hardly matters though - it had to end sometime and you can hardly have any denoument to a prank.

You know...I want to be pissed off, but for some reason, I can't bring myself to be.
I seriously had a blast with this thing. I truly did. I got to meet some *awesome* people who I do want to stay in touch with, and it made my life interesting for a while.
How can I be mad at that? Smile

LAME Evil or Very Mad

This is like masterbating and when you're about to reach and orgasm and looking down and saying "Hey I don't even have a dick to begin with"

Talk about p!ssing away alot of potential

Heh, this might be one of the most failed pranks SA's ever done, because nobody's mad. We all had a good time, and even if we don't get a nice neat conclusion, it's not like they were obligated to. Anyway, if you're reading, thanks for setting it all up.

Ah, well, it was great while it lasted. I found this forum because of it.
I wonder if we'll get to see videos 7-9.
And yeah, just because it's a prank doesn't make it any "Less real" than if it were an ARG.

I just finished reading the cube forums, I just can't believe it ended like this, it was a great masterpiece, and the people behind it did an incredibly great job at making it, it just seems like it had so much more potential, like at least finish releasing the 9 videos and then say that the end of the 1st stage of the 2 stages which end in 2012 or whatever is over, instead of just coming right out and saying it was a prank, and we got bored we stopped it. Still, an amazing experience, just wish it could have gone further... Crying or Very sad

I was reading one of the older incarnations in the creepy things series when I made up the story about the Wyoming Incident. I picked Wyoming and Niobrara because I knew them both to be rather sparsely populated. I then made some fake screenshots as well as the story of the hijacking. Brief interest developed in the incident, but I forgot about it pretty quickly.

IanJ brought the Wyoming Incident up in the Max Headroom thread. I decided to elaborate further on the story. People became even more interested, so I decided to make a video of it. I recorded the sounds from the WGBH logo (which I altered severely) and used a pitch generator for the actual faces part of the video. I did not use Poser. I used FaceGen Modeller. Frame by frame, I took pictures of the faces, animating them so that they moved a little. I then took the frames into photoshop, clone-brushed the SL logo off of them, and ran them through the reticulation filter. I then put them together through Windows Movie Maker. The text screens were done with courier in MSPaint.

Anyway, I posted the video to Google and then linked to it from SA. It became incredibly popular and appeared on a ton of blogs. The most intelligent discussion about it seemed to be at Unfiction.com. ViralDetector (The Detector) helped me by registering there and posting as a plant. I wrote most of the more literature-based stuff (GMiller's blog, The Masks We Wear, So Tired). Soon we released the second and third videos. They were made the same way as the previous ones.

We made up a huge mythology around the videos using stuff from Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Greek Mythology, Lovecraft, Modern Conspiracy Theories, Thelema, etc. OC_James worked on most of the mythology, though it became severely altered by the people "interacting" with the story. We pretty much played along with what the players seemed to want, and handed out some arbitrary tasks to people. It should be noted that me and OC_James live in Anderson.

Anyway, we wanted to do all nine videos, but interest in the videos and "game" were waning. We did Children stuff to knock up attention. When I noticed there were 59 people viewing the forums (a high for some time), I sent ViralDetector in to post "YOU WANNA KNOW WHUT" and "FARTZ". Truth be told, we were getting pretty bored by the end with everyone else.

A lot of the stuff we did was basic psychology. We're all goons (now), but OC_James has a name he will not give away to anyone and pretty much hates the internet. I think this was the longest he's been on the internet in about a year.

You know, I had fun while it lasted, met some great people, got introduced to a cool new hobby. But how many newbies are gonna get put off because of this?

Also worth noting:

Quote:

Was your decision at all influenced that so many people were realizing you were probably "the guy"

That and the fact that ViralDetector told me a lot of people in IRC and on Unfiction (and I even saw it here) were getting bored with the game and thinking it was a mess. I didn't want to spring the surprise when we had a total of five "players" daily.
