Jumping back to the note -- feel free to trout me if this has already been stated.

His supervisor (or whoever wrote him the note) calls him "Morlock."

Morlocks are a race of underground-dwelling humanoid creatures from H. G. Wells' The Time Machine. They eat other humanoid creatures -- the Eloi.

There's lots to digest here. From Wikipedia:

Quote:
The Morlocks and the Eloi have something of a symbiotic relationship: the Eloi are clothed and fed by the Morlocks, and in return, the Morlocks eat the Eloi. The Time Traveller perceives this, and guesses that the Eloi/Morlock relationship developed from a class distinction present in his own time: the Morlocks are the worker class who had to work underground so that the rich upper class would have luxury. The Morlocks live underground, tending machinery...

So, perhaps we could think of 256's boss as an Eloi -- clothing him (through pay) as long as he works below-ground. Will 256 later eat his boss? ;)

Or perhaps we could take it further -- that there is something else living down in the basement. What predates on Morlocks? H. G. doesn't say.

In H.G.'s later work, When The Sleeper Wakes, we encounter a proto-Morlockian civilization:
Quote:
...we find out that the Salvation Army has rounded up most of the world's lower class, forcing them to work underground in horrible conditions for the sole benefit of the rich upper class. It would seem that these people will later degenerate to become the Morlocks... they appear as workers working underground under horrible conditions. He notes that they seem to be turning more pale, as well as developing their own dialect of English.

Pleasingly for me, Alan Moore (of whom I am a great fan) has written about the Morlocks in Volume 1 of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen -- "Allan and the Sundered Veil." These Morlocks are simian and more powerful than H. G.'s Morlocks.

In "Allan and the Sundered Veil," the Time Traveller also refers to the Morlocks as Mi-Go.

Mi-Go, or Fungi from Yoggoth, are a space-travelling crustacean-like fungi that, amongst other things, transport human brains to Pluto. A time-travelling ability is implied. Mi-go worship Yog-Sothoth, Nyarlathotep, and Shub-Niggurath, and are despised by The King In Yellow (Him Who Must Not Be Named, but whose wikipedia entry is here.

Miguo is also another term for Abominable Snowman, which may be a more follow-able link than the Lovecraftian one.

tl;dr:
Things that we could think on from this link:

- Eloi
- Symbiotic relationships between worker and superior?
- Underground predators
- Cannibalism
- Mi-Go, and Lovecraftian mythos
- Migou - Yetis, Abominable Snowmen
- And the big one, not explicitly stated but rather implicitly yelled: Time travel.

As much as I hate to say it, time travel actually seems plausible. But why would the boss-type guy want to keep him away from there, then?

You'll have to excuse my delay in responding to this thread topic. I have not had much time lately to devote my all to figuring out this game.

As for 256 and some of the theories I have been pouring over for the last few days...

I believe that you all are on the right track and I think that if we work together we will be able to discover what is happening to 256. Recently his inactivity has worried me and for a while I thought that you all had gotten him killed and ruined what was turning into quite a bit of fun for me.

It seems that just recently we have been informed that 256 is alive but still does not sound well.

I have been sitting here racking my brain and going over all the different parts of the site to come up with an answer to what we are supposed to do next but I am also drawing a big blank here.

I'll see if I can compile a list of the things that I think are important that have not been addressed yet.

I do believe that time travel is sounding more and more plausible but, I really don't think that the boss sounds like he knows much about what is going on. It sounds more like he overheard something that had been said by this "safety" person and just chose to send 256 down regardless.

Okay so wait. If he has the /x/ keys, are those keys for the ones on the map marked with x's, or are they for keys that he can already get into? (And that the map has without x's?)

I always just figured calling him "morlock" was just a nice little easter egg type thing for anyone who knows a bit of literature. Since he always works in the basement you know, I don't/didn't think it really meant anything, but who knows~

Also, I really don't think /300zx/ was supposed to "lead" to /x/ I really think that they're both different doors that each need to be solved, not one lead to the other.

I don't understand how anyone could get to the /x/ door without going through /300zx/, and I definitely don't think /300zx/ will go anywhere else.

Because he's mentioned the X's before, and no one bothered to try it? Ireally think the there is some other significance there, the X's should have been obvious from his mentioning them and them being in the pictures that he said we're the keys.

/300zx/ is unrelated to /x/ in my mind, though I've been wrong before~

Huzzah, I was afraid we'd killed him.

I figured out the /x/ before I found out about the /300zx/ from you guys.

I found a room where I was able to pick up a faint signal. Enough that I
could try and send an SMS occasionally. Sometimes I would type something
out and hit send and it would tell me the message could not be sent
because of connection issues. To conserve battery I left the phone off
unless I was trying to send a message. The battery did eventually give out
on me. That is about when I believed I had figured a way to escape.

The time it took to get out is difficult to gauge. By the information
presented via the time my message was posted it was only a matter of an
hour. By feel I would have told you I walked in a straight line for half a
day without feeling anything but the cold floor beneath my feet.

How does one indicate "impenetrable darkness" on a map?

Nobody seemed concerned as to my absence. All of the people in charge seem
to be out of the office and away to a big conference for the week. I
assume that somebody noticed I wasn't around... but nobody has said
anything to me about it yet.

I appreciate the concern,

256

So, since I came in late I'm just going to do a quick little recap here to make sure I've got everything straight about this darkness.

When he enters it, his flashlight quickly stops working.
His cell battery dies quicker in there.
He's rarely able to find any kind of signal while his cell does have charge.
The walls hum.

Sounds to me like something is drawing the energy out of the devices he takes with him. Drawing the power out of the flashlight or its batteries, eating up the power in the phone, interfering with the signal, the hum, it all points to something being down there that's messing with either some kind of electro-magnetic field or some kind of creature that eats up the energy.

Another thing to note: In reports of close encounters of the third kind (not just abductions, and yes I mean aliens) people report their cars suddenly stalling, their headlights going off, their radios playing static or just plain dying, and oftentimes, their cell phones not working.
