[META][EMAIL] evaSPLATsubject180287.net
it does not bounce...

hi everyone. so, i am one of the newer players and all so i feel nervous posting this since nothing too huge has come of it. but it seems important and there was that sign in the bristol bathroom saying we all have to work together. anyway... after the reclaimed incident, i had this flash of intuition that told me that if someone were existing in a database they should have an email address at that database. so i emailed the following address:

evaSPLATsubject180287.net

now the weird thing is that there was no bounce. so just to check the timing of email bounces from the network i sent one off to randombananaSPLATsubject180287.net which is totally fake and the email bounced almost immediately. sent another email to the eva address to confirm and yes, the emails are absolutely being recieved by an email address. so the above address for eva does exist. i was kind of nervous about other players first so i emailed some characters about it, though i still have not gotten a response yet. here are the emails that i sent:

Quote:
Doctor Francis,

I recently sent an email to the two gentlemen Pat and Dave. It concerned an intuitive discovery of the following email address:

evaSPLATsubject180287.net

I believed that this email must exist because it makes sense to my own mind that someone existinng inside of a database would have an email address associated with said database. When I sent an email to this address late last night there was no address bounce. This means that the messages were delivered, which means that email address does in fact exist. I am informing you as well as Pat and Dave because I believe that you three are the most well suited to approach the situation... that and the friends of Eva intimidate me ever so slightly, seeing as they all know her so well and I have never even met her.

Do you have any recommendations on how to proceed with this?

and

Quote:
hullo there gentlemen.

you two do not know me yet, but i have somehow managed to be pulled into this whole business of eva and kenkon and all of that. unfortunately i am not much of a cryptologist or any sort of puzzle solver, unlike all those friends of eva who seem to know her so well. but i do have a whole lot of intuition on my side and last night i decided to fire off an email to the following email address.

evaSPLATsubject180287.net

it occured to me that i should try this seeing as how she has presumably been pulled inside the subject180287 database and is trying to communicate with us somehow. it made sense to me that someone existing in a database would have an email address associated with it. thus far there has been no bounce on the email address which would indicate to me that the two emails i sent were delivered to the above address. the messages i sent were "hello. test" and "where are you" though as of yet i have recieved no reply, which simultaneously excites me greatly and worries me even more greatly.

as you both have said before, there are no coincedences and this feels important to me. though i cannot yet explain why it feels so important. i would share it with the others but they intimidate me, seeing as how they are all friends of eva and i have never even met the woman. since you gentlemen seem so well versed in what is going on (perhaps masking just how much you know even to us however) i felt this was the proper course to follow. please respond with your thoughts on this as soon as you are able.

p.s. i will be moving back to los angeles soon. i only wish that i was moving back sooner so i could give that hack of an actor melvin geist a piece of my mind to his face. though maybe that would not be the best of plans...

so there that is. a real email address, with eva's name on it, at the subject180287.net server. please be gentle, i am much more of an intuition based player and the more seasoned codecracking players make me kind of nervous since this has been my first ARG ever. i was gonna wait till i got a response from any of the above people or addresses, but i just find it real hard to sit quietly on things and all you know.

Nice job!

I wonder if those of us who don't have mobile phones could send pictures to this address as suggested in the uplink thread:

[FORUM] Timehole Post - Saving Eva 2/21

Sorry, don't know how to make a link to the thread. Maybe a mod can help me out.

Let us know if you get a response!

ETA: a helpful link.- drizjr

WolfHawk, so far it seems that the only ones who have been successful are those with mobile phones. not fair, but, oh well. the easiest way i have found to make links is to open the "Post a reply" in a separate window or tab leaving the first free to quickly look something up.

UnimportantHero, Welcome aboard. You will have to overlook us we have been so excited over the events this past weekend that we are forgetting to welcome new players properly. Please don't feel intimidated, some players may come here with code cracking skills bursting at the seams but most of us, I for one, could barely crack an egg when I started. However, these args have turned out to be a virtual code cracking college. And after you have been here for awhile you will see what i mean.

Thanks for letting us know about the email. You were right in not waiting for a reply because, as many of us have found out, the PMs don't always have the time to answer every email or they might be ignoring something that is not in the script.

Always when in doubt, feel free to ask. There is only a few who get high from being critical b-holes, most of us are more than willing to help and glad to see a new person taking an interest.

Once again, from all of us. Welcome aboard! Very Happy

I think we had a similar idea. However, I didn't follow through nearly as well as you did, UnimportantHero.

I shot off a bunch of emails on a whim yesterday. If I remember correctly, they were:

myheadSPLATevamcgill.co.uk
insidemyheadSPLATevamcgill.co.uk
meSPLATevamcgill.co.uk (which bounced b/c the message box was full)
evaSPLATevamcgill.co.uk
evaSPLATsubject180287.net
myheadSPLATsubject180287.net
insidemyheadSPLATsubject180287.net
meSPLATesubject180287.net

They all more-or-less contained the same message, asking Eva to contact me if any of the messages got through. I didn't get a bounce message on any of them (except meSPLATevamcgill.co.uk).

I think it's really interesting that you did get a bounce message on randombananaSPLATsubject180287.net, because that indicates that the email addresses that you and I emailed do, indeed, exist. I think we're on the right track with this. Thanks for bringing this all up! Smile

wow.

yeah if a bunch of those did not bounce then it says one of two things to me:

(1) there are going to be a lot of email-based puzzles coming up and we have managed to position ourselves (yay intuition) in a good place for those.
(2) some of these emails were originally intended for the game but were not used, and the puppet master(s) just forgot to delete them.

we shall see soon, eh? Smile

i have been kind of thinking of emailing a poem about friendship along with a few pictures to the eva email this thread concerns, just to see what happens. but first i want to see if i hear back from any of the characters. i hope they would at least say if we are on the right track or not, regardless of the script.

I'm not too sure that it's significant - when you own a domain, you can set the mail system so that it automatically redirects any email sent to an address that does not exist as its own mailbox, to the admin address.

So for example, you can set evaSPLATsubject180287.net to go to Eva's mailbox, keir@subject180287 to go to Keir's email address, and then Anything else @subject180287 to go to webmaster@subject180287 instead.

It is interesting that the randombanana bounced, but I would give it another shot just to make sure - either someone typo'd on the domain name, or the non-assigned mailbox redirection had not been turned on yet.

Guys don't get your hopes up on the email addresses. If you've never owned your own domain you may not know that you have a default email account that catches all incoming email no matter what is before the [@] symbol. The reason some bounce is the filters probably saw them as spam or some other inappropriate content. You could probably email noone[@]evamcgill.co.uk and it would probably not bounce. However, it might be filtered to be automatically sent to the trash on the server side allowing only the addresses that are specifically specified to get to their in boxes. Which keeps things neat and tidy for the PM so therefore, they probably never get read. This is sort of hard to explain without a demonstration but I hope you get the idea.

Usually, the majority of the time, the PMs will give the correct email address to use. Only rarely have I seen any that you actually have to guess at. When they do they usually give enough hints so you can guess the right address fairly easily. Usually if one is not given it means the character or the person behind the character is not ready to accept and respond to email. I have seen this changed by the players, though, where the PMs rewrote the character to have more contact with the players than what had originally been intended.

This is a very well thought out and planned ARG. Someone obviously spent a lot of time getting it just right so I don't think the PMs will steer to far off course. In other words, we wait for our next clue. For example we're expecting more Birthday Cards, soon I hope, and maybe something else to do with the SRI exam and we have hardly missed a day without some sort of update. And as for contacting Eva, we have been given two hints on how to do that. The first and main one is via uplink.html the other may not be correct but has to do with the phrase "inside my head."

I hope I managed to be of some help and not confuse things any more than they already are.

Be Patient and Happy ARGing Guys.

You're welcome Rekidk, hope it didn't cause more confusion.

Jedi, I was on my way to bed about 4:30 am when I started writing the above. I was not trying to correct you or anything like that. I realize you did a better job explaining but you probably had already had a full night's sleep being that it was almost 9:00 am for you. You are probably a lot younger than me and think faster and you probably didn't have the distractions of a TV blaring in one ear and a husband in the other. I saw that you had posted after I hit the submit button but I thought, "oh well, coming from two of us should make it more credible." And I was too tired to go back and edit instead I went on to bed where I should have been hours earlier. Playing two games on different time schedules and working on a video contest for the other is taking away from my already limited sleep time. So if it ticked you off, I'm sorry. But on a side note, you shouldn't be so quick to judge others.

We need a mod to relabel this thread to [Meta]

I think I'll just label this whole post with a giant WTF?
I'll put it down to too much stress this one time, but my post was honestly not a dig - it was humour - or humor depending on the side of the pond... or hummus if you're egyptian... I was congratulation you on explaining it better than me.

What you said about judgement, right back at you, with a healthy side-plate of "try to be less defensive". *patpat*

Sorry Jedi, I totally misread your intentions. I thought you were being sarcastic. I will be more careful in the future.

Woo! Culture clashing! Yeah us English-types can be a bit dry sometimes. You get used to it.
