[SOLVED] Orange #057 Volume

The other day I overheard Tippy and Caine teasing Von about a party they had all been to, where young Von had a little more drink than he could handle.

"I'm telling you, it was a stomach bug!" exclaimed Von.
"Right, alcohol allergy, that it? What's that you got there?" asked Caine.
"Couple of pills of Clarity. I need to get 400ml of water to dissolve them in."

Caine went and grabbed a couple of cups from the watercooler, and gave a "you know the drill" wink to Tippy, who said, "Let me see how quick you are under the influence. We've got two cups here that hold 300ml and 500ml - how can you use them to get exactly 400ml without any measuring?"

Von gave an amused smile, and in under a minute he'd done it and watered a nearby plant as well. As he walked off in triumph, he called over his shoulder, "by the way, the anthro group is showing Die Hard 3 tonight, you might want to check it out..."

Here we go:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

1. Fill big glass (small:0ml, big:500ml)
2. Pour as much of the big as possible into the small (small:300ml, big:200ml)
3. Throw out the water in the small glass (small:0ml, big:200ml)
4. Pour the water in the big glass into the small glass (small:200ml, big:0ml)
5. Fill the big glass to the top again (small:200ml, big: 500ml)
6. Top off the small glass with the big glass (small:300ml, big:400ml)

There ya go! The leftover in the small glass even accounts for his plant watering.

This is probably another googleable answer, but where's the fun in that?

I did it slightly differently -
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
pour the small glass into the big one (small - 0, big - 300),
refill the small one and pour as much as poss into the big glass (small - 100, big - 500),
empty the big one and pour the water from the small one into it (small - 0, big - 100)
fill the small glass and add it to the big glass (small - 0, big- 400)

are they both right?

I'd say yes, but as the card mentions watering plants too, mine is probably more suitable.

Alternatively, he could do what most students do, and double the dosage and drink 800ml!

Anyone else entered this solve? I've tried every combination I can think of to describe the two solves but I can't get it to work...

I've entered it. lauriek, I'll give you a hint: The number of blanks they give you for the answer is highly deceptive.

How do you describe putting the 2L you have in the 5L jug into the empty 3L jug?

FILL? 3L JUG FROM THE 5L JUG

or

DUMP 3L JUG FROM THE 5L JUG

or

DUMP 5L JUG FROM(to?) THE 3L JUG?

Also did anyone else notice we've gone up from 400ml on the card to 4L on the solve? That must be some pill! Smile

I'm having real trouble with this one too! I've tried putting n/a in all three of line number eight and I'm wondering if I'm over simplifying the whole thing. As I write I have an idea! (Well, there's a first time for everything)

I was right! Those tricksy little hobbitsssss!!!

Yeah, I'd noticed the jump. Big pill, I guess. Laughing

Anyway, if I remember correctly...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Fill 5L from watercooler
Fill 3L from 5L
Dump 3L
Fill 3L from 5L
Fill 5L from watercooler
Fill 3L from 5L

Or something like that. It's been a couple of days now, so I might not be remembering quite right. Be sure to fill in "n/a" for all unused blanks!

ok, i must be stupid or something but i've tried this one six times and still cant get it to work even though i know the answer.
do you have to dump the 3l jug at the end? when you are dumping do you dump the appropriate jug from the appropriate jug or just put N/A in the last box? do you just put n/a for everything on the last step or dont touch it at all? argh...
rach =)

No, this one is a pain in the er, bum.

Here's a hint

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I can't remember the set-up exactly but the last two lines where you can enter info should all be n/a - so the puzzle finishes with 6 n/a's. I had a gard time because I went in too deep and didn't go for the simplist answer.

If you're still having trouble - I can give you more help - I hope - it's a while since I input my answer!

Laughing

I used the second solution, and I'll walk you through it in solve style:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Fill the 3l Jug
Fill the 5l jug from the 3l Jug
Fill the 3l Jug From the Watercooler
Fill the 5l Jug from the 3l Jug
Empty the 5l Jug from the N/a
Fill the 3l jug from the watercooler
fill the 5l jug from the 3l jug

Well that worked for me, and has the bonus of not having to put in loads of N/as
