[PUZZLE]Wood and Cloth
puzzle sent 1/17

The package was sent on 1/17, and contained a piece of wood (10in x 3in),with dots poked into it, and wrapped in cloth (cotton duck) with letters on the inside. The envelope had a hangman drawn on the back.

I've already tried reading the dots as morse code, braille, binary, and using the number of dots to represent a letter.

Cloth
Front of Wood
Back of Wood
Hangman

The scans of the wood are much clearer, the ink smudges are from the ink on the inside of the cloth, and I made it worse when I was wetting the board with a cloth to see if there was anything hidden on it.

Wood Front Scan
Wood Back Scan

But, today I received this letter (sent 1/25)

Translates to
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
WE HOPE YOU ARE HAVINGS[sic] SUCCESS WITH OUR LATEST BATCH OF COMMUNICATIONS IT IS EXCITING TO BE SO CLOSE TO THE END OF THIS PROCESS AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO EXPLAINING OUR SITUATION A LITTLE BETTER

IF THE WOOD AND THE CLOTH ARE GIVING YOU ANY TROUBLE ASK THE DCDD FOR ADVICE

My questions are
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
who is "the dcdd" and what is a "duice"

I'm going to write an e-mail to tCotSA to clarify this and whether we should wait for instructions to send our red numbers, or just go ahead and send them now.

EDIT:
I sent this e-mail to tCotSASPLATGmail.com
Quote:
I have a small quantity of queries; firstly, who is the dcdd and how can I communicate with them. Secondly, all of my delving has yet to divulge the definition of "duice". Finally, should I submit my cerise ciphers every correspondence, or only once; and if once, when?

In case this message needs to be authenticated my numbers are FIVE NINE.

EDIT:
Added Cloth pic, wood scans, and made the letter a URL.

DCDD

I searched for "DCDD" and found a site that looked promising - the Division for Communicative Disabilities and Deafness. Perhaps someone should give braille another try?

duice still stumps me - no links that I could apply.[/url]

I'm fairly certain that "a duice" is really "advice."

I also tried heating and wetting the cloth since I've posted, but I got nothing. I think we can pretty much rule out anything being hidden on the cloth.

I'll try braille some more, but it quickly seems to turn into jibberish for me.

EDIT: I'm completely musically illiterate, so I don't even know if it's a dumb suggestion, but could it be some type of sheet musics? like drum notes?
This site came up on my DCDD google search
http://www.dcdd.org/
Any musicians wanna check this angle, I've been messing around with online drum games but I don't know what I'm doing.

And, good call on "a duice" being "advice" negativeview, thats right on.

not music

As a definite music geek, I can say it's not music. I've seen percussion scores, and played a few, so although it could, it's very likely not music related.
As to your link, interesting find, but not for any reasons that have to do with the puzzle. Smile

If you rotate the front side of the wood 180 degrees from the way it's shown in the photo, you can get the word "the" in braille without too much imagination, but from there it's pretty hard to figure out how things would line up.

Out of curiosity, do the holes on the wood go all the way through, or are there different sets of holes on the front and the back?

No, the holes don't go all the way through, they are different sets on each side. I tried reading the braille by turning the board as you suggested, and I've also try using the dots as the bumps, and then as depressions; I havent been able to make sense with any of it though.

JohnnyCon,

Just an idea - can you do say, a rubbing, of a side & then turn the wood over & re-rub with the other set of holes (play with it a bit as it may require different ends up) and see if maybe that develops into readable braille?

I'm probably stretching a bit, but this is what I came up with braille-wise. I do find the inclusion of some english words or parts of words interesting at least. The fact that it's possible to come up with valid braille chars using all the dots is either important or coincidental, I guess.

You seem to be getting further than me TylerK, since I was coming up with a lot of invalid characters. And, I'm not exactly sure what you want me to do RedHatty, if you just want to see an overlay of both sides I can try to do that in photoshop when I get home.

Edit Spelling

They don't line up

The dots on the front and the back don't line up cleanly - you always have some overlap and some that are way close together. However, I can send anyone a .psd with the front, back, the front's dots, and the back's dots on separate layers should anyone feel so inclined as to muck around a bit more, send me a PM.

I just had my girlfriend look at the shingle. She's a music major, and she says that it's extremely unlikely that it's a song of some sort; you would need pitch notations, which aren't provided. She also says that she doesn't read drum notation, so that's a possibility, but again, it's unlikely.

I'll be emailing skywing about the .psd file, though. you never know.

in the interest of enlightening people...

<derail> Percussion scores are not really that different. Some have pitches, in which case they are written normally, as on a piano. Most, however, are just written on a single line using normal notes (whole, half, quarter, etc) with special symbols for rolls and the like (for the curious, the clef is just a dark vertical line.) I'm totally sure the shingle is not music. </derail>

You saw my post before I edited it to say PM me instead of email me. You take your pick, my email is sky.55SPLAThotmail.com

Oh, johnnycon, I think you forgot to put the pictures of the cloth up. Those letters might be related to the shingle somehow.

Thanks skywing I did forget the cloth pic. I've edited the post.
I also scanned the wood so I could better overlay it; I've added those scans to the first post too. The overlay still doesn't line up very good, but heres the image anyway.
