I was never under the impression that this was supposed to be a story told through a puzzle game. It's a social experiment. Things don't have to fit the strict definition provided by previous ARGs to be worthwhile.

In fact, I've sort of been questioning my interest in ARGs lately, and most of the problems I have with them don't apply to this game. It's good to see something actually different happening in a genre whose main attraction is how different it is from everything else.

In an interview linked somewhere, Jane said something to the effect of that we will all be the puppet masters. We are producing the content, not just reading about it from the two most active players. The whole thing with Nico seems to me to just be setup for the game world, and a token plot for the sake of getting a few more of us ufers to label it an ARG and join in. I wouldn't be surprised if we won't actually have to keep up with that very closely at all to participate. I can't even name half of the 8TSOC, and I'm not bothered about it. I'm more concerned with keeping track of other bloggers.

And I say that as someone who stops listening when someone says "social networking," and can't imagine why you'd put your diary somewhere that it can be read.

So what I'm saying is that for once, I have no game play concerns. I have had those for most normal ARGs I have started getting into (I'm building up quite a history of dropping out of games), but here, there's no upper limit on the game play. Everyone can have some, and every piece actually matters, because the game play is shaping the story yourself through your writing, and carrying the lessons learned into your life.

Sorry if it sounds like I am bashing ARGs. I'm not. I just think they aren't entirely reaching their potential because it is so high, and games like this which drastically change things are exactly the solution. I just don't really consider a daily check on discovered websites and puzzles I couldn't solve anyway to be "playing" anything.

Oh, and that's so not what "schizophrenic" means.

aim message

i've only a brief moment online but i did sign onto AIM tonight (xlollipop00x) and had a missed message from mpathytest.

not sure who else might of gotten one and i dont have enough time this moment to go back and check..i'll delete this in the morning if i see that it has been posted by someone else Smile

Quote:

mpathytest: [Offline IM sent 1d and 12h ago] Hey! This isn't Evie, this is Emil. I'm trying to find Evie, and I think she was chatting with you recently? Sorry, I know it is weird for a guy to log into his girl's AIM and start sending messages to strangers, but she missed our 'if you miss it I will kill you' Sunday call, which she would never do. It's been our ritual ever since I moved out here and she always calls at 11 AM on the dot no matter WHAT. So it's really weird and I'm a little freaked out because she's not answering her cell and with everything going on… so, have you heard from her today?

ok, again, i'll delete tomorrow morning if this has been posted!

Yep. They can keep better track of the entries that way.

I made a few in the pre-game...I think I'll post those as well.

yeah lollipop it has. she went to go meet nico and then came back with footage...and papers?

i hope she posts up the papers. i honestly think this is more than just a social experiment since the creator talked specifically about how the characters fate were up for us to determine. i think it will be like an ARG but more like an ARG that is like those "decide your fate" books you used to play as a kid.
...or at least that's what I'm hoping.

The part of me that will forever be a 15 year old playing dungeons and dragons in a basement full of swords, crystals, and R.A. Salvatore and David Eddings novels wonders, however, what happens here on out in terms of puzzle gameplay? Is there a "plot" we're going to be uncovering, problems to solve, codes to break, clandestine web sites, etc.? The reason I ask is that I'm having a great time playing sectorseven as well, and I'm wondering... Well, I'm just wondering. What do the rest of you think?

I think day one is a little premature to get despondent Laughing . Having read through the rest of the posts I agree that this ARG may be a little different but I'm sure it will still have a strong narrative running through it. I'm sure the puzzles will come it just might be that they are not the type of puzzle you solve with stegdetect. One puzzle we've already had was to translate the message left by everySunday.

This ARG is well sponsored so there will have been a 'budget,' expect to be surprised.

Have I missed something here?

Personally, at the moment this ARG is feeling like a creative writing class at school.

I keep feeling I've been set the following assignment.

Quote:
"Using the internet, library or other references sources as a starting point, write an essay on what it would be like to live in a world where suddenly there is an oil shortage. You should write the essay from your own personal perspective and that of your immediate family and friends. You should try and describe what you might do, or plan to do, in order to adapt to the problem.

Extra credit will be given for the use of alternative media sources such as audio and video.

All entries will be assessed and the best work will be posted on the class notice board at the end of each day"
Confused

Yeah exactly. And its a great educational thing, wonderful, but whats worrying me is this: Because of my illness, I find it really hard to write things (I cant explain anymore than that without wasting 10000 pages of forum on my illness xD just know I have M.E. ) . I found it so difficult to do the posts I have done, and I was chuffed with myself for what I managed to do, but when I saw the rank thing, I just felt really deflated, because physically, I cant keep doing it. Sad

I think its an incredible way of getting people involed on a educational level in schools, but as with the majority of big name ARG's it is US focused, and I'm not sure about anyone else in the UK but I found it difficult to find relevant oil information focused on the UK.

I hope this diddnt come across as a rant, I dont mean it too. I think its a great idea and excersise - just not if your ill and English Laughing

chrisjill86 - I agree with you about the website, to me it looks like a government one Laughing

I concur. WWO feels very much like a school assignment. (and I bet that some teachers are having success with it - good on them)

However I am not at school anymore and I want WWO to be more than a series of weekly writing assignments for the next month.

I know exactly what you mean. I joined up with WWO because I figured it'd have a good mystery behind it while we read about the oil crisis. I'm unable to play constantly as I was (finally got a summer job) but I still want to see where it's going. I'd love to have to crack some codes or something but I don't think that will be the case. It's a lot less ARG and more of a social experiment.

Losing your Password

Just wanted to let you know, when you submit your articles, you have to submit your Netizen username and password.

*IF* you forget your password or it doesn't work, you can have it sent to your email, BUT it gets reset to a random string. The email tells you to then login with that new password, but there isn't a formal login section on WWO -- so you wind up having to use the random pass to submit.

I actually sent them an email asking if there was a way to truly login and update your password. It would be nice to be able to update your email etc. also.

.W.

Well I think it's only the case if you supply the wrong password.

It's kinda weird. I submitted last night, and it showed up today around 11am EST. So it went through. The voice message I left at 7:30est was up by 8:30est. I guess it really depends on the editors, as it's certainly not blindly automated.

My voice message got attributed to the wrong person though, because I guess they try to listen to who you say you are, and go from there, and they misheard my name as "diesel". I sent an email to clarify it, so hopefully that will go through too.

The voicemessage made its way to the recent stories, but the blog entry didn't. So I don't think every entry is making its way to the front page of recent items.

Still trying to figure out what makes it where.

.W.

Mine is still not showing up. I sent them an email about it yesterday but haven't heard back from them. That's why I wonder if they sort through all the postings and just display certain ones.

I posted 2 blogs today, but only 1 showed up. Both were relevant to WWO so not sure what the criteria is for getting something onto the site Sad

EDIT: lol, now THAT'S customer service Smile thanks PM's
