Can we wait a little while to decide if it is a waste of time or not? I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do, but I think with all ARGs, you sortof have to basically decide to go with the premise and see where it takes you. I've always been taken somewhere I didn't expect, and I've always gotten impatient with what was happening in a game or a story at some point along the way.

I'm not sure I'll post much, but I don't really care about the scores in a game anyway. But I will follow along and add my attempts to do whatever stuff without oil I can think of doing.

*whew* I think I've finally found all the important links on the new site. Smile

Personally, I think it's going a little too fast for me, but I like it. We're definitely getting a wide variety of updates and opinions from everyone (players and characters alike), and I think that by the end we're going to have some great ideas floating around.

Anyways, have you all subscribed to the podcast? It was only briefly mentioned in this thread. I was wondering... Is it IG or player-created material? The way it's linked seems IG, but the content seems player-created. Hm.

Also, great job to everyone who's created content so far! Smile

Personally, I still think the yanks have got it easy. $4.25 for a gallon of petrol ('gas')? It's around twice that (i.e. £4) for a gallon of petrol in the UK, and has been for some time. True, most of that is tax, which raises a whole other issue: If the oil shock hits us here, how can our Tone justify us paying such a high percentage into his coffers? Will it be time for the UK government to get real?

I realise this is a bit of a side issue to the whole WWO thing, but it's bothering me. I can't get excited about people in the US getting mad about having to pay 4 dollars 25, even though it's bound to have a knock-on effect elsewhere.

Also, it seems that all of the locations are in the US, which is not the only country in the world.

Anyone else outside of America bothered by this apparent exclusion of other countries?

Isn't the US the world's largest consumer of oil?

I've wondered about that as well. If I wanted to do a game, I'd want it available everywhere. I suppose I could start talking about how this project is being funded by and for U.S. companies … yada yada.

I don't think that's the truth though. I think the truth is that Americans (myself included) suck at geography.

We know our postal system well
Address
City
State
Zipcode

Given that, it's cake for us to have a frame of reference for where someone is in the US.

How does it work in other countries? Does Spain have the same system as the UK. What about South Africa?

I suppose we could just use long lat coordinates, but that feels kinda impersonal, doncha think?

<shrugs> It's just a guess.

Having lived across the US border most my life, I've become used to such exclusion. In response you learn how to pass Wink Actually, I suspect that the limitation is the result of limited funding from institutions with national mandates.

That being said, your point on $4 oil is right on - although in the next 32 weeks, its possible that the prices will be made to rise to just under $8. What I'm curious is whether the netizens involved will be able to pace themselves accordingly. Will there are stories of riots breaking out next week? Then what?

Ive never fully understood the whole 'our gas is too expensive' thing in America, but only because ours is so stupidly expensive nothing else seems to compare to it.
I mean, I know of some people here that actually drive accross the channel tunnel into Europe to fill up because its still cheaper.

I kinda feel a bit uncomfortable voicing my initial oppinions about this now Sad

Of course. For the record, I don't think it has been a waste of time to this point. It has been extremely educational experience for me thus far. Nevertheless, I have some concerns about the game, although I hopeful that I will be pleasantly surprised by the end result. I don't care about rankings either. I want to see collaboration, a value which is not necessarily reflected in individual scores. I have more fun working through issues here on the forum with other players rather than by generating content in what sometimes feels like a vacuum. Of course, that may just mean I need to alter my style of game play. In any case, your point is taken.

okay first off i'm confused. are we playing like we're already in the second week? Confused

secondly dessum put up this bit yesterday:

Seems the site was knocked offline earlier today. For some minutes. If you are a reasonable person you are thinking, "Oh, it's a server error because of course a whole lot of people are UPSET AS HECK about this crisis and logging on." If you believe in conspiracies, however, you KNOW that this was no accident. YM is on it, folks, we are kicking in the redundancies... we WILL stay online. Stay tuned, keep the faith.

now yuckymuck seemed to backup this hacker idea:

We've had some growing pains with the site, we found some cool people to help out, they have been working double shifts, really dedicated. Dess thought that outage we had a while back was some kind of conspiracy, you know, to knock us out, and I was 'yeah, right Dess, the aliens under my dog house told me that too' but now I have seen the logs, and I'm not so sure. That creepy Bulgarian lady pops into my head. What side is she on? If she's a baddie, I hope she drives a hummer.

I say that it's NOT a coincidence and I mentioned so in one of the posts to them. I saw that Rumpletoe asked for the logs. yay. I'm pretty useless when it comes to network stuff though but that's definitely something we should be looking at...

Warning: Immediately Ahead Another Stupid United Statesian Question - - - -
How are gallons measured in England? In Canada, the "gallon" of gas used to be roughly equivalent to 5 quarts in the US while a "gallon" of gas for us is 4 quarts. My anut and uncle lived near the Canadian border for a few years and my uncle would always drive into Canada to buy gas because it was essentially cheaper there in light of the 4 vs. 5 quart measures.

At least the UK appears to have a plan in place; that's better than us.

Based on the 'summary' dates and the oil price chart we've been given so far, I'm guessing that they're going to do this with weeks (one game week per day) so that it's more realistic. A little suspension of disbelief so that the facts about oil can be more realistic. At least, that's what I think is happening so far. /spec

Waaaay back in--was it March? I dunno--I had a chat with mPathy. She kept getting booted off of AIM and stuff, and she thought she was being hacked. Maybe if the site went down for an IG reason, this is the same hacker back to take down 8tsoc? /spec

WWO outage

It appears to be an OOG outage. I got an email from Yuckymuck with the logs, and it seems to be a plain vanilla DOS attack on their ISS server. I sent him a script that should help prevent it again, but as far as I can tell, this is not the rabbithole you're looking for.

There's now a link to the podcast's feed from the wwo-watcher journal; however, it looks like LiveJournal doesn't know how to handle enclosure tags in XML feeds, as it's only posting text, and not the link to the actual MP3 file. I've emailed yuckymuck about this, so hopefully they can fix the feed so that a link to the MP3 will appear.

Also, since I was signed into the wwo-watcher account I've moved the Vox feeds into the Other Feeds view; since they haven't really been using Vox it seems silly to have a dedicated link for it on the wwo-watcher page. You can still access wwo-watcher's Vox "friends group" at http"://wwo-watcher.livejournal/friends/vox -- there's just not a link to this group in the layout.

Are there any other feeds from the WWO.org site available? Would be nice to have feeds for the latest stories, maybe. I looked for some but couldn't find any.

edit: Got a reply from yuckymuck re: the feed:

When I look at the XML I do see the MP3's link embedded, so I'm wondering if it's just that my aggregator doesn't know how to handle the enclosure tag. Is there any way you could add a link in the text as well? Thanks!

I think you might be right about your aggregator. There's a lot of them that don't support the enclosure tag, and if they do, they often will, you know, make some noise about it, call themselves podcast aggregators
like iPodder and so on. A link in the text is a great idea, except we don't know what the link will be until after we publish the text Sad

Tomorrow I'll submit a suggestion to LJ to request support of the enclosure tag for XML feeds. Need to go to bed now, otherwise I'd submit it tonight.

thanks jegger. kind of a let down though, i thought they were trying to be sneaky about some more nonplayer plot development.

and thanks xnera i really do love that watcher. it's the best place with everything all assembled for easy reading.

so yeah. doing a week per day? seems kind of insane to me but i've never played an arg before. i thought we'd actually be going at real time. Confused
I guess I just have to get used to it. I noticed that on the website it's marked with W1 and W2... this might get a bit crazy...
