So, you think that was an actual character interaction, or just some prankster pulling your leg? If he was the real deal, I would be glad as he hinted at more story-like elements, and for me there should be more to the game other than just the blog aspect, because I am not sure I am going to do that part of it; I might, but I don't know.

I have no idea what it was. I can't see why, if it was a player, they wouldn't join the community of players here, but....

And, honestly, i'd prefer blogs & emails than endless gAIM logs to read

Google reveals his identity immediately. HammerSickle08, I assume you're reading this - if you're willing to share your finds for collective play, and to separate speculation from hard evidence, come and join us!

I have to say though, it would be rude for chuckles to declare 8TSOC! if there were one or two of the 10 excluded by his comment in chat with them.

Oh! Gala_Teah has posted on her livejournal! This explains what HammerSickle08 was saying.
Gala_Teah is not mPathyTest, who is the youngest of them and hacked Gala's lj. Evidence suggests mP is Gala's kid.
Spec: Gala and Yucky are married or otherwise entwined, "YuckyMuck with Dessum9 and mPathytest" from /preparing.htm implying that Dessume9 and mPathytest are their kids.

Quote:
Those of you who are responding to the ping about the Denver airport, could you let us know who you are? The rest of you, feel free to chat politely for a bit and then Yucky will show you the door.

I think someone (us?) is interacting too much without getting in-world. And it's hard to get in-world when we don't know any of the story. I'd call that a pre-game defense mechanism.

P.S. Gala_teah... p@wned! ^_^ Now open it back up, this is no time to turn away helpful strangers...

mP, did you really think hacking into my site would get me to change my mind? Um, no.

So the lj group was supposed to be closed, but mP opened it up for a few of us before Gala closed it again. (nice handling pms! now you have a few dedicated watchers to feed snippets to without letting in the hounds!)
And to top it off, we get some character insight and relations. Good deal.

So we have two new LiveJournal accounts set up as maintainers for the WWO group.
mPathyTest, on the 12th and Chuckles, on the 13th.
Chuckles has interesting tastes and appears to be quite the good ole boy. Even got a picture of his happy dog over at photobucket.

The del.ico.us links go all over the place. Can't tell who are PM's and who are players, so that's as far as I'll go for now.

EDIT: Forgot to state the main reason for my post...
Gala's comments on her blog gave me the, "We were going to go with LJ, changed our minds and forgot to close that avenue." vibe.
But as long as they keep building the environment by adding characters, I guess it could go either way.

First Off

I've somewhat debated posting. I'm not much of a team worker when it comes to ARGs - people usually just piss me off.

Anyway, I am Cordrey aka Hammersickle08 - and yes I am definitely a player. I'm fairly certain that the game, is at least partially going on right now, though it claims to really be taking of on April 30th.

While I don't have ALL the chat logs - Here is some information I have (you can PM me for the sources if you don't believe me - I'll see what I can get.)

Links from mPathyTest:

-----
http://www.43things.com/ (and the subsequent link already mentioned)
http://www.robotcoop.com/ (this is affiliated with 43 Things in the info / source page - which corresponds to an interest mPathytest has in robots)
-----
http://www.emilnet.org/ (mPathyTest's fiance is a man who lives in California known as Emil - somehow I have a feeling this website is related though - just an hunch)
-----
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bionics (link given to me from mPathyTest after a discussion involving biomimicry (see below)

------------
SOME of my logs - I was dumb and didn't save the first conversation / I have the logs spread between two computers. This is most of the important stuff:

Quote:

Fragment 1:
Yep, 8TSOC - although if I have anything to do with it, it will be more like hugebigmobsTSOC . You in? (this is important, though I don't know how yet)

Gala_Teah told me to stop blabbing to random people on the Interent, to take it slow, make sure we can't be accused of Panic Mongering (the term Panic Mongering is in all caps, so she values it. Additionally, she was very adamant to mention it many o' times during our conversations) mPathytest: (well I think he doesn't want us to make people panic because secretly he doesn't want us to be ready! but don't tell Gala and the gang I said that)

Fragment 2 (another conversation):
HammerSickle08 (7:13:21 PM): You're not part of the 8?
mPathytest went away at 7:19:49 PM.
mPathytest returned at 7:23:44 PM.
HammerSickle08 (7:26:36 PM): hah, welcome back?
HammerSickle08 (7:27:56 PM): I'm pretty sure you're not part of the 8, so what are you and Dessum? Also, what does 2013 mean?
HammerSickle08 (7:32:06 PM): Heh, sorry if I came on a little strong - just excited, ya know?
HammerSickle08 (7:33:21 PM): After reading those articles you sent me, I'm very interested in helping out. Doing a little research has left me with some questions, and what not.
mPathytest (7:34:09 PM): no, it's cool -- Emil is distracting me with some flirty IMs but you're right, not one of the original
8mPathytest (7:34:23 PM): let's just say me and dessum are like elite
unitsmPathytest (7:34:39 PM): dessum has skills, i have crazy ideas
HammerSickle08 (7:34:21 PM): Could you elaborate?
mPathytest (7:36:00 PM): hmmmm well do you know anything about biomimicry?
HammerSickle08 (7:35:38 PM): like the stuff on http://www.emilnet.org/
mPathytest (7:39:55 PM): oooh that's interesting
HammerSickle08 (7:39:17 PM): ?
mPathytest (7:40:13 PM): bioluminescent imaging sounds cool. but no, not quite-- more like this--
mPathytest (7:40:30 PM): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bionics
mPathytest (7:41:02 PM): speaking of Emil and nets... I'd better keep him company better on IM before he slips out of my net mPathytest

IMPORTANT:
Auto Response from mPathytest (7:43:42 PM): Too many things on my To Do List to chat right now, 43 Very Important Things in fact.

Okay, maybe there's only 8 things so far on my list. But when one of them is "save the world", isn't that enough? I mean, really. (Her away message - one possible speculation is that she intends to kill off the 8 - see the correlation? It's possible, but could be wrong.)

Fragment 3:
mPathytest (9:36:31 PM): Hi Cordrey I'm Evie
mPathytest (9:36:42 PM): what's ACT stand for?
HammerSickle08 (9:37:41 PM): American College Testing
HammerSickle08 (9:37:52 PM): State testing for college
mPathytest (9:37:59 PM): oh right. I did SAT
mPathytest (9:38:03 PM): that was a few years ago tho
HammerSickle08 (9:38:09 PM): I'm a highschool junior, in Michigan - we're required to take the SAT
mPathytest (9:38:29 PM): that's kind of exciting, college choices!
HammerSickle08 (9:38:30 PM): ACT^
HammerSickle08 (9:38:48 PM): I'm thinking of some different places here in michigan - but also westpoint maybe.
mPathytest (9:39:14 PM): wow -- that's ambitious!
mPathytest (9:39:26 PM): sounds like you will be good to have on hand next month when... you know
HammerSickle08 (9:39:46 PM): Hah, I would be honored to do what I can.
mPathytest (9:40:00 PM): I went to art school in Philadelphia so I don't know too much about places like Westpoint
HammerSickle08 (9:40:37 PM): Westpoint is a US Military Academy
mPathytest (9:42:11 PM): yah I know THAT much silly. but art students and soldiers... not so much in common! or maybe there is more in common than I know, would be fun to find out. my fiance thinks i should get a gun for my apartment before April 30 just in case so I can be ready. i don't know what talking about the military made me think of that HammerSickle08 (9:42:54 PM): Heh, well - why would you need a gun? What is the extent of the danger?
mPathytest (9:43:27 PM): well, Emil and I have been running some scenarios... sims, you know of supply and demand...
mPathytest (9:43:43 PM): i don't know, he thinks people will go pretty far to keep their standard of living
HammerSickle08 (9:43:49 PM): Who is Emil?mPathytest (9:44:03 PM): my fiance. he's living in california now though
HammerSickle08 (9:44:22 PM): I see. Is he one of the 8?
mPathytest (9:44:42 PM): nope -- he's like me, a recent recruit!
mPathytest (9:45:15 PM): oops gotta go-- good luck with the ACTs. take my poll if you haven't already! http://mpathytest.livejournal.com/

I discovered through roundabout ways - and comfirmed with mPathytest that neither she nor dessum are members of the actual 8 which is mentioned on the site. However I believe (haven't exactly confirmed) that both were present at the airport and maybe working collaboration with one another on something.

Additionally, the numbers 2013 are likely important somehow to mPathytest - she's the only person on the site who doesn't have image of some sort portraying a person or an avatar - she has the numbers 2013 which strike me as noteworthy.

Heh,

Looks like I'll be a team player on this one.

Wow! So you've actually had AIM convos with the characters... Wow! Smile

I logged on AIM today and had this sitting in my 'missed' box:

Quote:
mpathytest: [Offline IM sent 17h and 48m ago] Hi GSAs -- looks like we missed each other. I grabbed your email -- thanks. I'll send you some links I think you'll find very interesting...

Anyways, I don't really have much to add in way of spec or anything at the moment... Just wanted to throw that out there. Smile

No oil? I would seriously be missing plastic. Or at least cheap plastic.

Looking forward to April 30!

There is a book I read a few years ago. After a major oil spill, a biotech company released a bacteria or something like that to eat the spilled oil...but then it got out into the world and destroyed all petroleum products.

So what else is made from Petroleum?

Quote:
Certain types of resultant hydrocarbons may be mixed with other non-hydrocarbons, to create other end products:

Alkenes (olefins) which can be manufactured into plastics or other compounds
Lubricants (produces light machine oils, motor oils, and greases, adding viscosity stabilizers as required).
Wax, used in the packaging of frozen foods, among others.
Sulfur or Sulfuric acid. These are a useful industrial materials. Sulfuric acid is usually prepared as the acid precursor oleum, a byproduct of sulfur removal from fuels.
Bulk tar.
Asphalt
Petroleum coke, used in speciality carbon products or as solid fuel.
Paraffin wax
Aromatic petrochemicals to be used as precursors in other chemical production.

Yeah we're super dependent on oil....it's actually kind of sad. I did a project on bioremediation and bacteria that helps clean up oil spills in the ocean. Interesting stuff...I love theories that could easily happen, well in this case it will happen.

also, just doing a google search on world without oil you get a lot of news articles (with the same info basically) on this - even mtv has a news blip on it.

Quote:
Near the end of the panel, McGonigal announced her next ARG, previewed at WorldWithoutOil.org. Launching April 30, it will challenge gamers in 30 parts of the U.S. to blog and otherwise communicate their experiences in an imaginary America where the oil supply has dried up. In the process of playing, gamers may be blogging about how they planned a wedding to which no guests could travel in vehicles requiring oil-based fuels. "What is dating like?" she asked. "What is cooking like?" The goal is to get people thinking and maybe even generating new energy-saving strategies, all just by playing. "I'm looking at this as a game that changes reality," she said.

Ooo good, FYI everyone my username is the same as it is here on VOX. Add me to your neighbourhood please.

Not alot of progress but contact:

Quote:
HammerSickle08 (9:11:56 PM): Hello
IllianaSpeedster (8:12:21 PM): hello
HammerSickle08 (9:12:41 PM): This may be somewhat forward, but I have become aware that you're involved in 8TSOC and I want to do what I can to help, if it's okay to talk to you about it.
IllianaSpeedster (8:14:03 PM): I think we'll need all the help we can get!HammerSickle08 (9:14:04 PM): Haha, good. I suppose I'll introduce myself eh?
HammerSickle08 (9:14:14 PM): I am Cordrey Ancheta
IllianaSpeedster (8:14:52 PM): nice to meet you!
IllianaSpeedster (8:15:00 PM): What made you choose HammerSickle?
HammerSickle08 (9:15:30 PM): It was originally a joke with some classmates of mine, and it just stuck with me. Though, I have some respect for the Russian culture, and people.
HammerSickle08 (9:15:38 PM): If I'm not mistaken, the name Illiana is Russian?
IllianaSpeedster (8:16:38 PM): oh, actually it's a combo of Indiana and Illinois. They use that term around here alot
IllianaSpeedster (8:18:24 PM): here being Indiana
HammerSickle08 (9:18:44 PM): Hah, I see - that is pretty neat. I only thought so because my cat's name is Illyana which is Russian in origin. - Oh really? I'm in Michigan, but I have some friends in Indiana. My sister lives semi-close in Chicago, also.
IllianaSpeedster (8:19:41 PM): I'm not too far from Chicago myself
HammerSickle08 (9:21:14 PM): Really? What part of Indiana? My friend, <deleted> is a reporter for South Bend Indiana, not too far either. I'm just outside of Detroit, myself - downriver in Wyandotte. Nice little mostly polish town.
IllianaSpeedster (8:22:35 PM): ah, I'm a little more to the west.
IllianaSpeedster (8:22:57 PM): sorry, to cut this short, but my dog's biting at my leg to go out
HammerSickle08 (9:22:51 PM): Talk to you again?
IllianaSpeedster (8:23:16 PM): that'd be great
IllianaSpeedster (8:23:20 PM): cya!
HammerSickle08 (9:23:09 PM): Thanks, Later!

Chat with IllianaSpeedster and her Flickr account

I'm majorly bouncing up and down. I finally got chatting with one of the eight. Transcript below. Yes I got info out of her.

Quote:
coffeenews18 (7:41:26 PM): hello

coffeenews18 (7:42:06 PM): are you one of the 8 to save the world or rather one of the ten

coffeenews18 (7:43:50 PM): are you there?

coffeenews18 (7:44:11 PM): any connection to A World Without Oil?

IllianaSpeedster (9:12:14 PM): oh, sorry I missed you!

coffeenews18 (9:12:15 PM): that's ok

IllianaSpeedster (9:12:30 PM): yes, I'm one of the 8

coffeenews18 (9:12:29 PM): cool

coffeenews18 (9:12:45 PM): why did the IM convo say that there was 10

IllianaSpeedster (9:12:59 PM): we've grown a bit

IllianaSpeedster (9:13:27 PM): hopefully one day it will be thousands

coffeenews18 (9:13:27 PM): ah very group of seven-esque...they grew and lost members

coffeenews18 (9:14:15 PM): so are all of you from the same area?

IllianaSpeedster (9:15:10 PM): no, actually we're from all over the place

IllianaSpeedster (9:15:32 PM): which makes for some interesting convos

coffeenews18 (9:15:35 PM): so you stay connected via the internet...cool

IllianaSpeedster (9:16:10 PM): yes, although I'm not very internet-saavy... yet

coffeenews18 (9:16:39 PM): hehe hey if you ever need any help....

IllianaSpeedster (9:16:57 PM): watch out. I might take you up on that offer.

IllianaSpeedster (9:16:59 PM): Smile

coffeenews18 (9:17:10 PM): fine by me

coffeenews18 (9:17:49 PM): so is Nico on AIM as well?

IllianaSpeedster (9:18:07 PM): not that I know of.

coffeenews18 (9:18:21 PM): ok...

IllianaSpeedster (9:19:17 PM): sorry, to chat and run, but it's time to take Lucy out for a run. Can we chat again some time?

coffeenews18 (9:19:34 PM): who's Lucy? Yeah sure.

IllianaSpeedster (9:19:50 PM): oh, that's my dog

coffeenews18 (9:19:58 PM): aww you have a dog too cute.

coffeenews18 (9:20:11 PM): well bye then.

IllianaSpeedster (9:20:17 PM): she's the only reason I'm still somewhat in shape

coffeenews18 (9:20:32 PM): Smile

IllianaSpeedster (9:20:38 PM): I have pictures of her on my flickr if you're interested

coffeenews18 (9:20:51 PM): yeah that'd be great...link me

IllianaSpeedster (9:22:05 PM): http://www.flickr.com/photos/39838581@N00/sets/72157594560937105/

IllianaSpeedster (9:22:11 PM): there ya go... cya!
coffeenews18 (9:22:14 PM): thanks bye

IllianaSpeedster went away at 9:23:45 PM.

Edit: Sorry to the mods for the bit of a flood but I'm catching up today...

Actually - that could just mean that they are additions - two who aren't part of the 8. I already confirmed that they are the extra two that are referred to - but the main reason I suspected they aren't part of the 8 is due to the fact that they don't participate in the IM that's on the site.

Also, I think it's particularly interesting that all 10 have images on the main site.

Just as a quick note - I'm in the process of setting up a wwo wiki site, which should be up and ready by the end of the week. Having just one thread to track is helpful in making sure all the current info is up to date =)
