Pay to play

I would be VERY annoyed if I started a game only to find out that--SUPRISE!!--you have to pay to get any further. Knowing up front can help you decide--hmmm, do I have the bucks for this, so should I even try it out and get hooked? That being said, though, I'd probably try the game and if it looked good enough, I'd somehow come up with the money. But if I paid for a game, I would expect it to be absolutely superb, with a truly amazing ending.

I would much prefer a game to be free, of course. And the idea of optional swag to help pay for the game would be good, too. I actually put into my feedback for the request that they make up some more of the Missing poster, the stuffed Yuki's, and the cow to purchase. I really, really, really, want that missing poster, or a stuffed Yuki.

Smile I guess we're both saying much the same thing in our own way.

Awww just a shame it had to end really.

Crying or Very sad

I agree. I want to see some closure with Eva. We've had closure with Frankie and Wilson, Pat and Dave (through their new video)... But not Eva, who is the character I'm really attached to. One last video--one last address by Eva--would really tie it up nicely. Smile

Also, regarding pay-to-play... I'd like to know what I was getting into first. If I could support it through IG swag, I would. (Moreso if that swag is easy to purchase.)

I think asking about if we would pay to play was an entirely legitimate question for an arg developer to ask even if just for curiosities sake. who among us wouldn't like to completely make a living doing what they love, but...

i think they did a very good thing doing the entire arg free this time as I would not have paid for Meigeist upfront because in addition to my presently limited funds i would've had no idea what I was getting into. however I would now consider paying for a sequel from the same development team, provided the price was reasonable and with the expectation that due to the game being funded we would have an experience that was equal to or superior in qyality to the one we just had.
I would also be more than happy with a donation or pay for extras model which has already been followed at a text-based RPG I play. It's very nice to be able to send the admin there something to help defray costs when I have extra funds versus a monthly charge

Compared to some of the ARGs I saw, the quality of their videos and overall visual production (websites, videos, et all) was very professional. Definite stuff of quality. If they made an ARG that was longer and offered more involvement for everyone - newbies and latecomers included - then I would totally pay... like... maybe between $5.00 and $10.00 a month.

I'm dead against the idea of paying up-front - I did it once with Studio Cypher, and got burned, because neither the game itself nor the items I was sent were up to scratch.

I think the merchandise idea is by far the best one, but Geist could've made better use out of it. The overheads for print-shops like CafePress, means that very little money actually reaches the PM's - and the bidding nature of eBay, means that people who have less self-control and more money than some of the other gamers, will win out, plus it just feels a bit greedy of the PM's to pit players against each other like that.

On the whole, though, I think they were on the right track. I'm involved in a lot of promotional work for independent music, and they make very good headway by selling merchandise direct to the consumer - things like CD's and t-shirts, that are very reasonably priced, and because there are no middle-men involved, the profit goes directly to the artists - which is even more appealing to the consumer, because if they like the band, they will want to help them out as much as possible.

I would like to see the same model adopted by ARG's, where financial support is entirely optional, so that if the PM's do a good job, we can spend some money on some funky t-shirts or the odd goody here and there, and at the same time know that we are genuinely rewarding the people responsible, rather than some reseller.

Personally, I would've happily shelled out money for some personalised rewards if the quality was high enough. A kenkon t-shirt would've been nice - something that doesn't look out-of-place in the real-world, but serves as an inside joke to other ARG players - like a badge that says "Lost. Erwin" on it, or "I put Melvin Geist into a coma, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt." That sort of thing.

Giving our appreciation to PM teams.

If I'm enjoying the game and the opportunity for purchase of swag comes up, I typically contribute. When there is an "ingame" method of donation, I will contribute (I think Virtuquest had a "donate to the Township Days" not expecting to actually get donations, it was just in keeping with the plot - and we, as players, would have complained if the link didn't work).

If there is a hat passed around at the end of a good game, I'm happy to contribute. I sent Hawaiian cookies to the Sammeeeees team after the conclusion (as a thank you present). I know, not $$ but I wanted to express my gratitude for a job well done.

Cafepress stuff is VERY low profit - so the PMs get $2 out of every $20 you spend there. Not much support unless the volume is high (and it typically isn't). But it's still fun to have the souvenirs.

Gratitude and Kudos

Many thanks to the wizards behind the curtain!
To Hazel and Jon: Bravo.
To Pat & Dave: I can't remember when an ARG has made me laugh so much. Thanks for that.
To everyone else involved: Well done!

Thanks also go to all the players, whose enthusiasm, playfulness, and smarts made this experience all the more fun.

To borrow a line from "The Wizard of Oz"...."A heart is not judged by how much you love; but by how much you are loved by others."
Based on that, your hearts must be immense. Smile

/me joins hands in the virtual circle of love.

Great sentiment pixiestix, but no, we're not in hiding. Hazel has been working on this project for well over a year, I've been involved full time for the last nine months. Over these final two months the game has relentlessly and completely consumed our lives to the exclusion of our friends, families and loved ones. I for one want to take a little time out, and just enjoy spending time hanging out with my girlfriend, with out watching her eyes glaze over as I witter on about the latest amazing puzzle solve by you all!

All of you deserve some beautiful, relaxing time off, hopefully in a very quiet place. (Not at KenKon--you can check in any time you like, but you can never leave...)

I hope that after you are all fully rested and have your batteries recharged, you are able to come back and put together another fabulous game for us. I, for one, will sign up for any game you care to make!

Ditto what the Piper said.

Of the games I've been involded with thus far Geist has been the most incredible

Excellent Wizarding by the PMs, excellent acting by the Actors, excellent gaming with everyone here!

Here's a question: Can I have everyone's autograph??!!

Sad to see it go!

Hazel and Jonathan you guys are brilliant. I can only imagine the time you must have put into this. Geist was very well planed and thought out. The story, alone, held my attention and kept me coming back for more while the game aspect was just the icing on the cake. I especially liked the way you kept players on track and I'm thankful that you limited the chat sessions. I hate that I missed the last few days of the game but sometimes real life demands our attention and unfortunately there is no way to pause an ARG.

I can't say it loud enough, THANK YOU for the adventure, the experience and the memories.
