Failed Solve

I tried

trend

trela - a leather strap for dog walking
trelu - not a word?
trema - a kind of tree
treme

QWERTY are normal keyboards. Put that backwards, minus Y: TREWQ.

In french, normal KB's aren't QWERTY, they're AZERTY. A guess?

I just guessed based on the "Carver isn't so cautious", and none of the info given says he's at all computer literate. I was just thinking about it, and then I read zoid's post "**ert", and, well, took a jab at it.
