[S2] [Cards set] #132 Rescue
500 points

Any hints/spoilers for this card?

I tried going through and getting the plain number for each one (5^3 = 125) and noticed that 5^3 and 4^3 are way higher than the other numbers, spaces in the message maybe? -I bet I'm way off.

Edit - Tpoic for consistency - MikeyJ

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Ignore the actual values of each term but write each term out in full:

e.g. 3^3 = 3x3x3
2! = 1x2

See what you get

Back reads.

Quote:
"Can you hear me?"

The hand pulse was weak, but present. Daniel Saunion stepped back and surveyed the situation. The person – someone female – was buried almost completely by the rockfall, and probably had multiple injuries in addition to being unconscious. He took out his key and tapped it nervously, but it was still dead. Help would arrive eventually, he was sure, but it looked as if he'd have to rescue this person himself.

Most of the debris covering her head and torso was loose, so Daniel was able to scoop it away quickly, but her legs were pinned down by a boulder. As he dug, he talked to her about his life and his work, about his dilemma. In a way, he felt happy. Everything that he'd been concerned about had now evaporated and condensed into a new form, into saving a life. He looked down at her face, pale in the evening light.

"I'm going to clear some of these rocks off your leg. If you can hear me, tell me if I should stop," said Daniel.

She didn't reply. Daniel tested the weight of the boulder, and then slowly hefted it to the side, letting it drop heavily once it was clear. Turning back, he looked down to see a foot-long shard of dull grey metal running through her leg. He breathed deeply, looked at it from all angles, and then pulled it out quickly.

And just so it's here...
The front

Quote:
3 months ago an officer was caught and sentenced to life in a Russian gulag. The Navy would not leave a man behind however, and word soon reached him of a daring and dangerous rescue mission. They would come for him through the icy waters of the north; he had only to reach the meeting point on the coast to be free.

After escaping the gulag and battling his way across the barren, frozen landscape, the officer came at last to his destination. As the wind lashed across his face he caught sight of a ration pack weighted down with a rock. Inside was a note that chilled him to the bone.

Note reads:
Code:

2^3     3     4      3!     4^3    2      5^3    3!     2^3    4^3    3      2
1^1     0!    1!     1!     4      1!     0!     1      0!     3      1!     3
3       1!    2      2^3    3!     4      2      2^3    3!     1^3    2      0!
2^1     2     3^1    0!     1      2^1    3^1    1      4^1    0!     4^1    5
5^3     3!    0      2      2^1    1      3!     5^3    5^3    3!     5^3    3^3

3!      2       3^3     3!      2       1!      3^3     4^3     2
2^1     3^1     4^1     4       2!      2^1     0!      2^1     3^2
4^3     1!      3^3     2^3     4       3       3^3     5^3     1
1       2       2       0!      1       1!      4       2       2
0!      4^3     3!      3!      2       3^2     3!      1!      0!

Sorry I'm not smart enough to ge the spacing better, and without the dashes. Embarassed Nevermind. Smile

You write it as
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1...In math, no numbers multiplied together = 1 and 0! is just one way of writing that out.

Confused

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
So I typed it out into Notepad making an effort to keep the letters int heir appropriate columns.

I can make out "fleet left" on the bottom, but I don't understand the top. Can anyone help?

To me the top looks like
"cci ffi cefell"
But it won't take it.

Double check your second letter and then respace it. The rest is correct.

Nevermind

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I guess you're supposed to enter it with putting fleet left on the next line.
