[S2] [Dice set] #231- The Fruits of the Tree

Got some cards today, first one I got out of the pack was a silver.

Front:

Quote:
On an island, that might
Later be named
"The Island of
Subconscious visions"
Lived the creator of life
And he had a tree.
?
The creator of life had
many, many children.
I shall speak of four:
Apollo, Brian, Cassandra
and Daedalus.
?
Apollo was born on day 1
of the creation,
Brian on day 2
And Cassandra on day W+1.
?
At a special time of celebration,
Apollo was six feet tall, Brian
was three feet tall,
Cassandra was two feet tall
And little Daedalus was only
eighteen inches tall
?
Now fathom this:
On which day was little
Daedalus born?
And who was his father?

Guest puzzle architect: Geoff Stanton

Back:

Quote:
What are we, as modern historians, to make these accounts? Together, what has become known as the Reese mystery continues to attract unusual theories and crackpot scholarship. Ideas range from the simple: that the "beak-nosed Academician" was a deviant and a murderer, to the political: that he was a spy from one of the towns that engaged in conflict with Perplex City, to the downright bizarre: that he was an alien or an interloper from another dimension.

On reading these accounts, it is important to bear in mind certain facts: Gwynneth Hughes was a respected politician, but a well-known confabulator who embellished and even invented stories to make her political points. A [word that looks like 'brief' crossed out] brief glance through Maryam Enosh's biography will confirm dozens of such events. In addition, there are minor but significant points of inconsistency between the different accounts.

For Monday:
1) Note down all inconsistencies you can find between accounts. Is there anything you would expect to be mentioned which does not appear?

2) Make brief notes on where you would look for additional information about this case.

3) Read pages 108-112 in your books and suggest the kinds of primary evidence which might help to confirm the theories set out there.

LastResort, if you get the chance would you be able to add what set of cards this one belongs to (dice, noughts and crosses or cards), and maybe scan the back too?

cheers

I have this card at home so I'll let you know what set it is when I'm back. Shame I can't remember...

Done. As for the actual puzzle, I have no idea as to how to go about this.

Looking at the card more, I noticed something, maybe its needed.
In the line "and cassandra on day w + 1"
Actually the w is the lower case letter for Omega.

Important?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
According to Wikipedia, omega has a value of 800 in the greek numeric system. I'm pretty sure that's the value for the lower case omega.

Not sure if it's important, but I'll take a deeper look at it. Nice catch!

Yes, sorry, I forgot to mention that it wasn't actually a 'w', and I didn't know how to make that character normally.

The html entity: ω makes an ω.

Could someone have a look over Tree set theory... It has a lot of the same keywords as this puzzle, such as parents, children, height and ω.

Ok - I've managed to solve this one (which I'm very, very surprised about Shocked ) . Here's a hint which will hopefully help anyone else stuck on this (cross-posted from Perplexorum):

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The names of the children aren't that important and the answer to the card isn't anything to do with Greek mythology.

NeOx is on the right track. If you find the father first, that should help make more sense of how to work out the day (though, to be honest, most of the maths went way over my head so I solved that part more by intuition and my own peculiar brand of logic ).

The key phrases to finding him are 'the island of unconcious visions', 'the creator of life' and 'he had a tree'.

While the discussion has been running rampant over on Perplexorum, not much has been added here.

That being said, I've come up with some hints that would lead in the right direction (beyond echidna's hints, which ultimately lead me to understanding the solution).
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
subconscious visions
the creator of Life
birthdays 1, 2 and ω+1
the children's relative heights
the math involved

Additionally, another child may be spoken of (without giving away the answer):
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Echidna, despite sharing the same birthday as Brian, was much taller than the others, and at the special time of celebration was twelve feet tall.

Furthur more, I'd say you understand the puzzle if
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
you can also figure out which day Phoebe was born, given that on the special day of celebration Phoebe was only nine inches tall.

Ummm... nope. Daedalus's height is given in the puzzle statement; 18 inches. Which happens to be related to Apollo's height:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Daedalus's height is 1/4 of Apollo's. This is relevant.

My first set of hints, along with echidna's should get you started.
As for my second and third hints, I've been told that they're just more confusing.

An odd bit of nitpickery, for those who know the solution: isn't Cassandra actually born on day ω and not ω+1? It's a minor difference, of course, but worth noting...

Not the way I understand it.

But...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Everyone else was born on day ω.
