[TRAILHEAD?] 08nova.com - Nobody Likes a Stalker
Odd TV advertisements

I was watching Friday Night Smackdown! on TV, and I saw this weird ad of a teenage kid saying "Nobody likes a stalker" amidst some 'hacking' effects on the screen, and it gives a link to a website called 08nova.com before closing with the picture of a coastline. I checked the link, and it leads to some sort of countdown clock. This is either some sort of viral marketing scheme or a blatant ARG. Comments?

It seems to me that it's counting down to June 1st 4:00pm (in my timezone, anyway). 614? 611? I wonder.

I looked at the source HTML and found all of nothing. But I'm pretty new at this, so maybe some seasoned experts could check it out.

Here's what I found:

Well, in the source, it seems the countdown is from the Macromedia website. It seems a little odd that they wouldn't create their own countdown, but... Oh well.

The whois reveals that it's registered through Domains By Proxy, which means that there's something viral or secret going on here (at the very least).

That means it's pretty recent. This is a new discovery, definitely something to watch.

Also, a couple quick Google searches are telling me that nobody else has picked this up yet, or if they have it hasn't gotten cached by the search engine yet. I suppose that if the first commercial was just on last night, that would make sense.

If we could get a copy of this commercial to analyze, that'd be great. We should all keep an eye out for it on YouTube/GoogleVideo/etc.

Failing that... We just wait until June 1st, 4:00 PM EST. Smile

Blech - I'm beginning to hate GoDaddy.

Update. I still can't find any videos of 08nova's TV ad, but I just remembered that under the text 'Nobody Likes a Stalkers' at the end of the ad, it says 'Johnny 28:03', or maybe '26:03' sinze the text was a bit fuzzy. I'm going to look for any references to that and a connection between 'nova' and the number 8.

I can't believe I myself, an ARG newbie, found a recent trailhead! Yay!

I'm not the *best* christian, so this might be ridiculous, but I'll crack open my bible and look for those passages under John.

EDT: Whoops. John only goes up to 21, so no biblical referance.

Having taken a look at it myself, the bit that references the macromedia site is the bit that tells your browser what to do if it hasn't got flash. The actual countdown itself is at countdown.swf.

Other than that, I've got nothing.

It may be a series of ads for the upcoming movie Disturbia: http://imdb.com/title/tt0486822/

It's main character is a teenage kid; maybe the same one?

Except typically viral marketing wants to build the buzz BEFORE the release of the movie.

Disturbia was released on Friday April 13th (and you'll see the star of the movie on Saturday Night Live tonight).

Could be another movie coming out in June?

Dunno what help it is, but I used a decompiler on the countdown.swf. Once it gets to the end it merely displays "It's Now Now Now!!!" flashing between yellow and red.

I'd also like to add that since the countdown seems to end at a specific user viewed time based on timezone (8PM for me), this is probably something related to TV not movies?

The Now Now Now banner may be just a placeholder to be replaced with a link closer to the target time. (at least that's what I would do were I them)

Hostel...

Hostel Part 2 comes out a week after the 1st. Probably not relevant but it has the whole stalker theme.

I'm not sure that this is really leading anywhere. I think that this is a countdown to a new show on the CW called Hidden Palms, that premiers on May 30th. But I guess we'll have to wait it out and see what happens.

This same add appeared tonight during Smallville on the CW. Since both Smackdown and Smallville are on the CW perhaps we should keep an eye out for more of these commercials there. I'm TIVOing Supernatural in the hopes that it shows up again there.
