[Proposal] The Puzzlers Guide I was sat here, bored outta my mind, randomly doing sudoku, when it struck me how useful this might be.
It appears that some people, myself included, sometimes need a hand putting 2 and two together...so how about we put together a guide on how to approach a puzzle. What to look for when you 1st pick up a card right through to cipher cracking.
If people were interested in this then it could be a useful tool for all those times you're at a loss of what to do next on a puzzle. It could also be used as a kind of players welcome guide to new players.
Just brainstorming but open to comments.

I think this sounds like a great idea. I love projects.
I suppose the first thing to do is to look at the card carefully and try not to jump to immediate conclusions as to what the puzzle might be.

I assume you would want something more in-depth than the puzzle solving resource page on the wiki:
http://perplexcitywiki.com/wiki/Puzzle_tools
I suppose we would need chapters / sections for each category of puzzle types. There are lots of maze cards, for example.
Question though - how much hand-holding do we do? For example, cards like S2 #039 Clash of the Titans can be solved with a simple Google if you don't know anything about the NFL.
Or are you talking much more of a meta-level walkthrough?

I was thinking along the lines of a total noobie guide. That covers all sections/areas of puzzling. Not a card by card guide of how to solve them but more about the approach to cracking a generic puzzle, things to look for, puzzle theory, card technology (i.e. uv or heat effected cars). That sort of thing.
If people are serious giving this a shot then we should probably 1st agree on some chapter titles and subsections. Example below.
Code:
Contents
1.Numbers
a. Sequences
b. Primes
c. Squares
d. Cubes
e. Famous numbers
2.Letters
a. Languages
b. Substitution....
Am I being clear or just totally flaky and vague?

Not at all!
I'm really liking this idea, although I probably couldn't help develop it; I'm one of the ones that will need it to solve greens

I don't think you are being flaky at all. However, this very well might be a case of biting-off-more-than-we-can-chew. That said, I teach a lot of courses and teaching something is a great way to solidify your personal knowledge and if enough people worked on it, it would not be that bad.
I would like to suggest that we put the TNGTSP (The Total Newbie's Guide To Solving Puzzles and NOT The Next Generation: Trisodium Phospate) on the wiki.
I also suggest that Chapter 3 would be on Ciphers.

Here's an idea for a section:
Code:
#. ARG "First Aid"
a. ROT
b. Cryptograms
c. Anagrams
etc.

Well to continue on the same theme, I've made it so.

Nice one. I'll note that down for now until we get the chapters nailed and then we can crack on with content for each chapter etc

The beauty is that you could perhaps help with the easier stuff. No one should feel excluded as if you can solve a puzzle. any puzzle you can contribute.

Loving it but as its a newbie guide perhaps we should leave the jargon out as much as possible?

I really like this idea, and think it could be useful. Plus I am always in favor of updating the wiki.

I'm going to go ahead and make the blank sections so that the Wiki can take over the contents. I'll leave the original in there too

That sounds great! We have collections of tools that can be used, but less info on how and when to use them. I like the idea of having a methodology for approaching a puzzle that you know nothing about that would be useful whether you're tackling something like The Angel's Key or Pinball Wizard . Would a compilation of types of puzzle be useful?

Rather than leave the jargon out, people might find it handy to have a glossary of these things (which could be a separate but linked project, I guess). I'm just making more work for people, aren't I?!?
But yeah, the idea sounds good to me

All sounds good to me.
Don't bother asking for permission to do stuff though. If you're capable of doing it dive right in, the link is below my signature.
Especially like the idea about listing puzzle types, that would come in really helpfull with the chapters list as well.
