I think there must be some sort of pattern in the lines that appear to the left when you "click click click". They change color and brighten/dim. They look as though they would be used to label a diagram. There is one line for every letter/circle.

The portion of material that is added to a growing form, such as a spiral, such that the shape itself remains unchanged (except in size) is termed a gnomon. (This is from the page that came up when googling Aristotle's quote, but I don't seem to get the same def. anywhere else.)

When looking for references to gnomon, I keep coming up with stuff about sundials, astrolabes and shadows. Which I guess I can see how "shadow" can be applied to the above def. of gnomon.

1. (Dialing) The style or pin, which by its shadow, shows the hour of the day. It is usually set parallel to the earth's axis.

2. (Astron.) A style or column erected perpendicularly to the horizon, formerly used in astronomocal observations. Its principal use was to find the altitude of the sun by measuring the length of its shadow.

Well Kona, your look at the code inspired me to do some investigation. I made a graph of the frequencies of all the letters in the code, then compared that to a graph of standard english letter frequencies. Result: Peaks and valleys are in almost identical spots in both graphs, meaning the letters in our code have similar frequencies to the letters in english. This means that the code is almost certainly a railfence or some other transposition cipher, instead of a substitution cipher. Long story short: This puzzle is probably solved by moving letters around, or adding another string of letters, rather than substitution like a cryptogram or vigenere or anything.

Comparison of frequency graphs is attached, note the close similarity of peak/valley locations.

Kona and I are in chat, talking about different methods for decoding gnomon. Together, we arrived at the thought of taking every twelfth letter from bottom to top (top to bottom apparently didn't work). It starts out looking good:

This was bugging me for awhile. I remembered someone in my past reading about coded messages being written on a strip of something wrapped around a stick, write the letters in a column and when the strip is unwrapped, it looks like "junk".
