I think this thread is what YZ is all about thanks to everyone for posting the different views.

way to start to "wake up and give a shit"
keep in mind that czerno also says
"stop and recognize what matters to you and make the same effort to actually change your world that other people do to vote on american idol"
"do not blindly follow the line of bullshit that i am giving you now i do not want you to buy what i am selling"

as for art and entertainment if you live in a world where your art and entertainment keeps you happy then your hiding from the real world in fiction theres nothing wrong with that allot of people use art and entertainment as a way to decompress from the harshness of reality but i think YZ is ment to do the opposite it amplifies the harshness of reality right down to that claustrophobic feeling that you might get while watching the news and tries to inform and turn american idol zombies into effective members of reality.

finally groups like various rebel art groups and evangelicall christians who ask their members to act strictly on trust in the groups ideals are a form of brainwashing this is laid out in czerno's speach as well theres a fine line between what you believe in dictating your actions and who you believe in dictating your actions.

again thanks for the different views!

 So..

As a long time lurker id like to ask a question on YZ..

Has it stalled? Is it still going on? Whats the hold up! Is it a revolutionary holiday? Have those lovely time meddling scientists all got bored?

Is it still going on on another forum and this has just become a husk or what?

It started months ago, but with the finding of this site recapping what has been found, it has gone dormant.
Most of us are expecting something to happen again with more releases from NIN, either the next installment of YearZero in album form or possibly the remix album or even a single release. For now we just wait.

Huh...and here I was afraid I'd have started an argument by saying this ARG was pointless, but instead I've got everyone going on about gays or something. That's probably good, because I have no idea how to explain that point further to someone who considers being made to feel worse than when you went in to be a form of entertainment.

I guess you could call the Orwell thing sarcasm. I think my reasoning was something like, if Reznor thinks this is the path we're on, and the massive sales of 1984 didn't prevent it, why would his rehash do any better?

Again, there is (was) a point to the ARG, you just keep saying there isn't one for some unknown reason (I guess because YOU don't get it). And also, AGAIN, lots of people find lots of different things entertaining. You've completely ignored any evidence to the contrary. You even mention the dystopian grandaddy, 1984, and how well it has sold, and STILL don't get the clue that MAYBE people find this kind of thing entertaining in some way.

So what you are saying is that there is no way this could make a difference, so he shouldn't have even tried.

I won't try to explain the concept of "hope" to you, as it appears to be something you're incapable of understanding.

There, is that argumentative enough?

OH, and here's a thought: maybe 1984 DID work. Maybe things would have been much worse without it. But since it was written 50 years ago, it may be a teensy bit less relevant in 2007. Perhaps a retooling is just what we need to remind people of where we might be headed. I'd bet that a LOT of people your age haven't even read 1984.

Have you?

Are you even familiar with the WORK of NIN? I can't think of many "Entertainers" who are LESS concerned with making the audience "Feel better" than Trent is.

Head like a hole
black as your soul
I'd rather die
than give you control.

And that's just off the first album.

So are you just trolling? Do you post like this on the World Without Oil fora?

New people are born every day. Every day a new artist steps into the spotlight. Every day someone grows up. Every day a parent fails to teach
their child the lessons they failed to learn.

Is Marilyn Manson right?
"Everything has been said before,
There's nothing left to say anymore,
When its all the same, we can ask for it by name"

Yet he keeps singing. He keeps telling us whats been said before.
He keeps talking. At one point Stephen Hawking said that...
All we need to do... is keep talking. (its also in a Pink Floyd song)

Yes... Orwell said it before, Now Trent has spun a new set of possibilities into our grim Future, now Big Brother is a Nano-Machine chemical that reads our minds.

But the truth is the same, and a new generation will listen and learn without even knowing it. Some day down the road they will relisten to these old albums and realize that Trent helped open their eyes.
He got them thinking, a whole new generation of thinkers and musicians will grow out of influences like this. Just like previous generations did, and
hopefully it will be enough to hold back a bleak tide that ALWAYS lingers on the horizion.

The possibility of oppression is a future we must continue to work against, and the work gets more powerful and the message becomes more important when we are closer to that oppression.

Stupid as this sounds, Bush and his war has set off a LOT of those thinkers who are frightened that too many of our young will stop thinking and die before they even live. Its now... when they are still young that we must keep up this work. And since a new generation is born every day, the same messages MUST be respoken over and over to keep the tide where it is, or recess it if we can. And it needs a new face so this new generation will listen to it, and take it as their own.

Old Mythology, New face... the mask of the present. But the message stays the same. Just because we haven't slain the evil, does not mean we should stop fighting it. We must keep it wounded, and never let it heal. If we give up because Orwell didn't seem to vanquish the evil of the world, then the evil will win.

Still no more on YZ, despite it being described by Treznor as "not dead"....
I'm still trying to believe!
