*snorts* You didn't HAVE to give ANY of it. I'm impressed that you did!

You've restored a little more of my faith in humanity. Smile

This, to me, sums up the whole of this community: we appreciate everyone's effort for itself. No matter how much or how little, every effort counts.

The flip side of this is that sometimes we don't express our appreciation explicitly, trusting that everyone recognizes that we are all grateful to each other for our collective contributions.

Because I haven't said it yet (in this thread at least), thank you so much Rand0m. Your donation was extremely generous in that you had absolutely no obligation to give anything and yet you chose to give enough to not only keep things running a little bit longer but to make it that much easier for us to stay ahead of the growth curve in the long-term.

On a personal note as well, I cannot express how much I am grateful to you Rand0m. I have not ever been one to ask for help, although I think I am learning that skill somewhat. I knew when I started this forum that it had an open-ended potential for growth and that there could be logistical hurdles to overcome in the future because of that. I honestly never expected it to be anywhere near as successful as it has become.

I don't whether it comes across to most people about how much work goes on just trying to keep something like this going and running smoothly, even given the very small rule-set we require ourselves to enforce. I don't know if people understand how much it really costs to pay for enough bandwidth and CPU cycles just in an effort to ensure that when something big and exciting comes down the pipe, that the forums will at least stay up.

Even with ARGFest, maybe it seems silly that we have to pay thousands of dollars for a conference room and a hotel-kitchen continental breakfast for 100 people or whatever (thanks Brian Wink) and nametags and supplies but that we were hesitant to even charge a nominal registration fee of ten dollars for it, which didn't actually quite cover the food. The question has always been whether or not it was worth it to do so. I have not yet been able to answer "no" to that.

In a sense, this is still a hobby site in that it's what I love and the responsibility for keeping it up is all my own, and that I am the only one who can require that kind of obligation of myself.

It is hard at times, there have been occasions where I've wanted to walk away from it all. It's too much work, it's too hard to deal with, I can't afford it, whatever. There have been times where I have had to take a break just for a reality check.

This genre means a hell of a lot to me and the biggest reason for that, as well as the most important, is the amazing community.

Today, Rand0m is my hero. But every day, every single one of you are my heroes, just for coming here and doing what you want to do, and contributing to the group effort when you can.

I think that's what it's all about.

Thank you again, Rand0m, and thank you to everyone else as well.

And I think we can say collectively as well - you are our hero Sean! The fact that you put so much time and effort into this site and for the genre, while keeping it a free service for the users, no thanks could sufficiently voice our appreciation!
You and rand0m share the title of hero today Wink

I had looked into ARGFest and I can't tell you how astonished I was when I saw the ten dollar registration fee. I go to cons for other areas of interest and they range from $60 to $200 registration fees for three days. The price tag alone would have caught me (if I'd had any vacation days left! Also, it's hard for me to fly across the country on a whim. :/)

You guys are some kind of awesome.

Thank you, Rand0m (and, btw, you have such a cool nickname! I'm so glad to see a great thing happen to someone named Random Mr. Green )

You just single-handedly paid for almost a year of hosting - that is a great contribution, and I don't know how anyone could expect more from a single person (as opposed to, say, a company or an organization). I hope you enjoy your prize (or whatever is left of it after taxes), and I thank you again (and again and again)! There are over 13000 registered users on uF, and if only 8% of us donated only $8/year, hosting would be pretty much taken care of, and uF would be prepared to provide a playspace to any game, no matter how huge, without worrying about shutting down. Hopefully your gift will inspire many of us to help keep this site running for many years.

So, thank you, Rand0m; thank you, unfiction, for being the most amazing collection of brilliant minds that I've ever encountered; thank you, all the mods and admins for all the hard work necessary to keep this site running; and THANK YOU, Space, for making it all possible!

What a wonderful, breezily written, painfully honest and touching accounting of the endgame. You are a credit to the genre, sir. Congratulations (and did I say thank you enough in my previous post? Well, thanks again!)

Wow.

That's pretty much all that I've been able to manage to say, since I heard the news.

Tight-ass? Please! It was an incredibly generous and thoughtful gift. As someone who thinks of unfiction as her online home and the people here as her internet family - you just put a roof over our heads for an entire year freeing us up from that worry so we can play and have fun and that whatever else comes our way can go to getting that new carpet or saving up for that annual family reunion that keeps getting bigger and better.

Thank you Rand0m - not just for the gift to uf, but for the gracious way that you played Perplex City. You've always been an asset to the community here and I'm kinda sad that it took such a generous gift to get me to say it (though, really, if we took the time to thank all the amazing people here, it would take days and days!).

This is so awesome! Very Happy Congrats on the big win. I read the story of your discovery of the Cube on your website and really enjoyed it. Man, that must have been exciting!

But damn, props for donating to unfiction. That was a very kind thing to do. It's great to know people are willing to do things like this to support the ARG community. You have my respect. Smile
