[TRAILHEAD]Day 21
Not sure what to call this...

Today I got an interesting email from someone.

It was from interactfic @ writeme . com

All it had was a link:

http://interact-fic.moonfruit.com

Looks interesting, although it doesn't start until April 15th. It seems like an ARG... (character interaction, player influence, puzzles) but it's very non-traditional. ie. the characters aren't posting anything we'll be reading online.

Anyone gonna be playing... er, reading?

Have you ever wished you could send an email to a character of your favorite book? Have you ever wanted to talk with a character on the phone? How about with IM?

Interact-Fic, an innovative new form of fiction, allows you to do just that. Every few months, Interact-Fic will debut an original, multi-level story. As you read the updates (usually daily,) you'll come across email addresses, AIM screen names, and more THAT ACTUALLY WORK! If a character is feeling down and needs someone to talk to, it can be you! If a character needs help solving a puzzle that is necessary to the survival of a loved one, you can be there for them! Make friends, meet other readers, and more with InteractFic.

You might think being a part of fiction is something brand-new. In fact, it's not. Alternate Reality Games, online treasure-hunts that allow players to influence the story, have been around for a long time. They usually rely on solving puzzles to advance a storyline, and allow players to influence the storyline. ARGs also rely on a heavy community aspect, which enables a whole group of people to tackle a puzzle rather than assuming a single player can do it. Interact-Fic can be considered an Alternate Reality Game, but we like to think we're a new breed of ARG, one that doesn't necessarily require a community.

You can either take an active role, emailing and talking with characters, or you can sit back and relax while you read an engaging story. Talking with characters and visiting in-story websites isn't necessary to enjoy the fiction, but it'll make the experience immersive.

We hope you'll return to this site for the first ever Interact-Fic, entitled Day 21. The first chapter will be posted on April 15th of this year. In the mean time, look around this website to find more information on what's sure to become one of your favorite pastimes. Who knows what you'll find?

For those who like to play by themselves? An online version of "Cathy's Book"?

On the "How to Read" page they still suggest there might be a forum or community feel. I do like the part where they explain the "TINAG" concept.

Quote:
WHEN TALKING TO CHARACTERS:
When you're talking with characters from an Interact-Fic story, it's important to remember that they don't know they're fictional. For them, this website does not exist. Don't simply say, "Hey, I saw your story online, and I'd like to help." Be creative; if you're going to be part of a fictional world, you're going to need to be creative and innovative. These characters feel as though they're real people. When the story on this site ends, their life continues!

Quote:
WHEN INTERACTING WITH OTHER READERS:
.....Although not essential, sharing clues with other Readers could make things more enjoyable for everyone. So have fun! You might make a friend or two.

Sounds a bit different to a "traditional" ARG, I signed up too, I enjoy a good read.

Well, this sounds really cool. I especially like the idea of an ARG/interactive-fiction game that I can play by myself, what with the whole anti-social thing going on with us CompuGeeks(TM) Geek Laughing
