[SPEC] Daniel Saunion
Collection of thoughts and evidence pertaining to Saunion - caution megapost

Below, I have organised the card backs that seem to relate to Daniel Saunion's plight, I've tried to do it fairly factually and gathered the information that we have relating to each character from the various sources. The fact that this takes up eight of the wave 2.1 backs and that Saunion is mentioned in the video on PXCstories.com leads me to spec that this is going to be involved in the first case for Kiteway PI (no drink too strong or game of poker too long) though it doesn't link explicitly with the main news story (yet).

There are certain aspects to the story that back this up, but particularly Emily Saunion's "I will not let anything stand in the way of his [Daniel's] recovery and redemption" and John Saunion's "Who knows what she [Emily] has Sister Cecile do to Daniel, but I'm going to find out". Which, in my mind, means that Violet is due a visit from John Saunion (maybe in the form of a curb-crawling limo driven by a 'heavy'with dark glasses?).

My wild spec currently lies in the direction of Daniel waking up to have had a Damascene conversion to the Brotherhood and that it will involve something weird in the water at Greycastle Hospital (or something Cubey in the soil of Catbite Gorge) and Sister Cecile having an affair with Dr "Trev" Kennard. None of this will improve the Botherhood's – sorry, Brotherhood's spelling or web design skills. Violet will definitely end up scrabbling about at the bottom of Catbite Gorge at some point, hopefully in a 'will they won't they' tryst with Kurt Wink . Sod the cards, I hate puzzles; I love Diagnosis Murder, Columbo, Murder She Wrote, Midsomer Murders, Father Dowling Investigates and Scooby Doo Very Happy

PXCstories.com video – News report; scrolling item on Saunion Jr. at Greycastle Hospital.

Card Order:
The story makes sense reading in the order 130, 129, 132, 131. Lining them up horizontally the rock patterns of the background also match in this order. Order of the other cards is less clear-cut, but read in order, 193-196 makes sense and ends with "Who knows what she had Sister Cecile do to Daniel, but I'm going to find out.", which is a logical end point.

Characters:

Daniel Saunion (Saunion Jr., Patient 0059823, Mr. Saunion)
32 year old male, son of John and Emily Saunion (divorced). Was at Perplex City Academy, but left under apparently difficult or acrimonious circumstances. Currently in Greycastle Hospital in the North of perplex City in some sort of unusual coma; apparently has been "dreaming continuously for five months". Under the care of Dr. Kennard. Five months ago was involved in an incident in Catbite Gorge (map reference) south of Perplex City, recorded on cards 129-132. Reasons for presence in the gorge are unknown, but he seems to have been climbing before – "this was the kind of situation he hated most, half-crouching, half-slipping down a slope" – and it is commented that he has a "reckless nature" by Dr. Kennard. Condition changed very recently during a visit by Sister Cecile, apparently suspiciously (final line John Saunion's account).

John Saunion
Boss of Agilon, which seems to be some sort of pharmaceutical/technology company, associated with Cognivia – "I used my contacts at Cognivia"? Previously married to Emily Saunion until a "big argument", which led to divorce and their current situation where he finds it impossible to talk to his ex-wife. Daniel stayed with him after he left the Academy, but later moved out. John Saunion cites his wife's influence for Daniel's moving, but there may be other reasons – "I think that's one of the reasons why he moved out". John is responsible for Daniel's presence at Greycastle Hospital, apparently against Emily's wishes, blocking applications for a move to Emily's home via the Health Office; obviously an influential business man.

Emily Saunion
Devout member of the church of the Brotherhood of the Six and Daniel's mother. Works at the University (which?) in some capacity – she refers to members of the History Department as "colleagues". Lays her son's "later misfortune", which could refer to the accident or the incident at the Academy, at her ex-husbands feet. She has been using her connections with the Brotherhood to attempt to move her son to her own home to be cared for and also in order to research his condition in their libraries. Has discovered that Daniel's is not the first case of a "strange sleep" that has been connected with Catbite Gorge and hints at a cure. Gives tacit agreement for Sister Cecile to visit Daniel, although she admits that "he wouldn't want this, but we must try something." Ominously states that she "will not let anything stand in the way of his recovery and redemption".

Dr. T. Kennard (I'm hoping the T is for Trev)
Doctor at Greycastle Hospital responsible for overseeing Daniel Saunion's case. Has connections with Cognivia as John Saunion used "contacts at Cognivia to get Kennard and his team involved". It can be presumed that Kennard is an expert in these cases. "Managed to stabilise" Daniel's condition, but described by John Saunion as "baffled" and by himself as being confused. Has a conflicting view to John Saunion when it comes to use of invasive surgery on Daniel. He states that it was "ruled out as an option by his father", whereas John Saunion states "they refused to try invasive surgery in case it worsened his condition". There is no evidence to say which is correct.

Sister Cecile
Sister of the Brotherhood of the Six, she learnt of Daniel's condition from Sister Golda Flynnt, another Brotherhood member. Admits to be "fascinated" by the case and visited Daniel, seemingly with Emily Saunion's blessing. Witnesses Daniel opening his eyes after speaking a prayer of recovery taken from "the teachings of the monuments at Rhat-Mamar".

Sister Golda Flynnt
Sister of the Brotherhood of the Six, has been encountered before ref. Knows the Saunion family personally and precipitated Sister Cecile's involvement in the case.

Two unknown climbers
One confirmed as female, the second is not referred to by gender, but as Daniel confused them it could indicate that the second is female (or has a feminine voice?!). Both are involved in the same avalanche at Catbite Gorge as Daniel and at least one of them is in direct radio contact with him. This second climber refers to Daniel as Saunion, so may be an acquaintance rather than a close friend. The first climber sustained fairly severe injuries after the first rock-fall, being buried and having a "foot-long shard of dull-grey metal" through her leg (where did the metal come from?), though how she faired in the second rock-fall is unknown. The second climber is capable of talking at least. Their condition since the accident and whether they were recovered along with Daniel is unknown. Both climbers and Daniel seem to have been well-equipped, Daniel looks for "supplies or working radio equipment" and they have radios in addition to their keys, which, incidentally, aren't capable of suriving a rock-fall.

Places

Greycastle Hospital
Current location of Daniel Saunion and place of work of Kennard. May be a private hospital with connections with Cognivia.

Catbite Gorge
Scar-like gorge south of Perplex City, and subject of much spec in Season 1. Some of the catacombs under the city have their exit there.

I was going to say, but never got round to it - is there an argument for a separate forum to cover discussion of the card backs, like there was in s1 with the map? It might not be the busiest, but it could be useful - for example, a thread like this on the 'choose your own adventure' cards is probably overdue. (Damn my broken scanner!)

That is one long post, and about that card backs I'm not so sure if a separate forum is needed, any card backs that are relevent to the story can be discussed in the story section where it is relevent. It would be interesting to see what other people think about this though.

I've done a quick search of the Sentinel for background on things.

Agilon is briefly mentioned in this article (something to do with an acquisition by/of Cognivia or something), and in this from the archive:
Quote:
# Agilon Games to Begin
Prominent technology company Agilon AI has announced its annual Agilon Games will begin in late November. This yearly competition allows the company to test out some of its latest technology in competition against an enthusiastic crowd of human participants.

Greycastle Hospital is where "stunt enthusiast Raoul Benton" was taken "after an unsuccessful jump off the pinnacle of Ascendancy Point." (from here), some of the injuries that occurred during the interfering with the police department were treated there (from here), and it is mentioned in the record-tampering doctor article here.

Incidentally, my mind keeps translating Greycastle Hospital into something to do with Castle Greyskull.

Okay, now I have this image of a children's program in PXC where the hero solves puzzles to stop the plans of an evil pseudo-undead, who looks like they eat a pound of Ceretin a day, whose transformation involves little more than a costume change yet no one recognizes the advanced form, and who has a cowardly pet tretretretre who also becomes heroic during said transformation.

Sounds catchy Laughing

Anyway, I also searched the wiki, and came up with a couple of other minor bits of info. I have no intention of searching every PXC resource under our (or their) sun, but the name Saunion, as well as Agilon and Hospital Greyskull seemed vaguely familiar.

So, from the wiki:
Agilon AI
* One of Perplex City's foremost artificial intelligence companies
* Drug company Cognivia acquired 51% of the company's stock in 268

There's no page for Saunion, but the Department of Cryptology page mentions the Saunion Prize.

And Hospital Greyskull (sorry, I promise I'll stop doing that) is marked on the PXC map here.

I know none of this is new stuff, but I thought it might help pulling all the tiny bits of info from S1 into here for reference.

Regarding card backs, I've done a mega-post of my own over here summarising the different categories. Not sure if it's helpful but it cleared up a few things in my mind and helped me find out what we're missing in the way of cards.

One thing of relevance is that there is a tenuous (and I mean tenuous) link to the second person story played out across 225, 226, 227 and, probably, 228. I think it reads like a dream and in the room from 227 'you' meet a woman and talk about a shard. Like the woman and shard in 131? Is there a description of the woman on the back of 132 and is she raven-haired?

about the card stories -from a perplexorum post by Adrian.

Quote:
I forgot to mention, the game is completely free. Other than the card stories - which are of course already on the PXC Card Catalog - there is absolutely no need to buy anything to play the game.

So the card stories, what do we do with them?

Daniel was the first common thread that I noticed on the back of my cards.

Green #107 Question of Sport may be related to the gorge.
