Yay, message from Hope!

I had posted on her Myspace:
Quote:
hey! Smile it's nice to meet you. do you know my friend dj?

She responded in a private message:
Quote:
Subject: Sorry...
Body: To take this conversation off my comments section but I feel like it isn't information everyone needs to know.

DJ and I aren't talking. It's a long story. I don't know how well you know him, but I would appreciate it if you kept him out of this.

xo s

Woo, she signed it with xo! That means hugs and kisses right? Woo!

So... what? DJ is her ex, I presume? A creepy ex who was creepy enough to make his email address based on her name? Dunno. Perhaps I shall e-mail DJ.

-d

EDIT: The puzzler in me wants there to be a puzzle in that video. Does anybody recognize any of the (bad) music playing in her car? Maybe assembling a tracklist could be helpful.

Good work, guys! Don't have much to add. You already figured it all out.

I've got a message from Hope as well, after I enquired about "The Pink Hour". She doesn't say anything about it, though.

Quote:
Hi Johnny! Thanks for the friend request.

Yosemite is gorgeous. Definitely another favorite of mine—there are so few places that have that peculiar moment of stunning color.

PS: Thanks for sharing your blog, although it reminds me a bit too much of my dad's. Wink

She just signed it "hh". Guess I'm not as special as danny Crying or Very sad

What I find peculiar is that Hendler was first hinting that he wanted to find his daughter (or did we read him wrong?) but now he's saying she isn't important.

But perhaps we can use Hope's current location, Mount Wilson Observatory, to pry something more out of him.

Do you really think the soundtrack could matter, Dan?

What did she say to the dog?

Hmm... i got distracted by the kisses and hugs and missed the fact that she signed my message

(emphasis mine). Who is "s"? Too many damn initials in this game!

I'm not sure, I just know my puzzle sense tingled a bit when I saw the vid. At this point, we don't know enough about the characters to know if any of them have motivation to be sending codes or puzzley messages to anyone, so we're in a bit of a "following all leads" mode. I'm not much for the obscure research everyone seems so adept at, but I do like me a potential puzzle. Perhaps the puzzle is realizing how long the gaps are between parts of the song, and therefore, the gap in timing between one cut and the next.

I can't figure out the first song, but the second is "Not Ready to Make Nice" by the Dixie Chicks, and it shows up in several of the clips in the second half of the video. It's late, but tomorrow sometime I'll run a more detailed audio comparison so we can figure out the timing between her camera cuts. Any ideas on the first song?

I mentioned Mount Wilson Observatory in a reply to Hendler's latest blog. I said I found it while doing my own solar flare research, mentioned they do solar research there and ended with "I'm sure you're familiar with this facility."

If Hope is visiting someone there who knows about her and her dad, Dr. Hendler might know about that person as well, and might even know he's working there. If that's the case, this should generate a positive response.

Chances are, though, if this person is a fellow scientist, he might have different views on the subject material, which might aggravate Hendler even more. Well, nothing else to do, I suppose.

As noted she very briefly flashes a document before the camera and though it is very difficult to make anything out I can at least see:

Quote:
A RAILWAY TO THE CLOUDS...
By the mid-1890's T.S.C.
As difficult as that was...
we and David Macpherson ran away to the sky
...but also Alpine (possibly) Tavern at Crystal Springs

We're thinking this is regarding Mount Lowe Railway a tourist attraction on Echo Mountain and Mount Lowe, north of Los Angeles, California. The third division of this projects was the Alpine Division, opened in 1896 it was here that the last of the hotels, the 12-room Swiss-style chalet, "Ye Alpine Tavern," was built. A region of this area is known as 'The Great Inclince'. A great feat of engineering was realized with a trestle that was built to negotiate a 150 foot (45.7 m) deep granite chasm across 250 feet (76.2 m) of track on a 62% grade. The trestle was named, as was customary in railroad constructions, for the chief engineer, David Macpherson, thus, the Macpherson Trestle. There is a publication detailing this named
Quote:

* Seims, Charles (1976). Mount Lowe, The Railway in the Clouds. San Marino, Ca: Golden West Books. Lib of Cong CC# 76-45760; ISBN 0-87095-075-4.

I think this is what she flashes before us. Don't know if it is of importance.

Just wanted to post this before I go shopping, thought it might be something to go on!

EDIT: Thinking back to what Schrijvertje said I must admit I'm somewhat perplexed as to the Hope/Hendler dynamic. I appreciate now that we are going to be unable to hasten an explanation but I guess it was worth a try. He makes such a fuss of her apparent jaunt across to who nows where yet is incensed when it is implied that this is of any great importance. I'm thinking that may be more of a case of anger that someone would intrude into his personal affais (bad man that R Tobias) which is understandable but I guess we're gonna have to sit back and wait for the videos to keep coming.

EDIT AGAIN: Dan doesn't xo s simply mean hugs and kisses as in plural? My friend signs all her cards xo's - might be wrong though I am most of the time Embarassed

I have no idea if this is of interest either but it would seem that Haramokngna recently held a vast Summer Solstice celebration but of more importance it seems it did so in conjunction with an organisation known as Redbird. Redbird it seems is an organisation for promoting the "...Awareness and Celebration of Indigenous Cultures and People Creating A Substainable Future..." and whilst this may be of no interest it may explain the incongruent Red Birds video on Hope's youtube account. Maybe we were fed a subtle clue there? Confused

PS I know it's boring to keep doing this but Hope has added "Give me your leotards" as a myspace friend. Would this be one of us by any chance?

Haha. That is me. Please do not start speculating as to how leotards fit into all this... Laughing

Noticed that summer solstice celebration but when I wanted to view the pdf flyer, my browser crashed. Yes, Redbird is too much of a coincidence.

I don't think Hendler was saying she's not important now. I think he was suggesting that the object of this game (at least at this point) is not to tattle on Hope to her daddy. I think Hope's blog post, too, suggests this.

In a TINAG sense, I can understand Dr. Hendler. He was expressing some sadness that his daughter is growing up and distancing herself from him, and he feels a little jarred at the idea that there are Internet people willing to be his private detectives for a price. At least, that was my impression.

I have been looking at the video for more clues, too. My main reason for this is that it's strange to think Hope would be leaving us all these bread crumbs to come find her when we have no real reason as of right now to need to. So I'm wondering if there's a message in the video -- something suggested in the images or the songs.

pink hour
morning folks

Something struck me as odd about this-

I remembered googling "The Pink Hour" and not seeing much that seemed significant, but I remembered Yosemite showing up- here's a link to a photograph of the park at dusk: http://www.summitpost.org/view_object.php?object_id=40707&context_id=172736
The particular picture is of a spot called Half Dome, though I found other nature photographs of "the pink hour" in other places.

So... maybe Hope and her father are from around Yosemite? Or maybe Hope just feels at home in a natural setting?

PS- re:

This organization seems to fit Hope's liberal worldview. It seems natural that she might want to be involved somehow. Here's the link to their website: http://www.redbirdsvision.org/. They have a calendar of events, with a big powwow coming up in July. They also hold regular classes in Santa Maria.

Hope mentioning Yosemite is simply because I showed her that pic of Half Dome in my message to her. Could just as easily have been the Hoover Dam. I don't think Yosemite is important, only the last part of her reply: "that peculiar moment of stunning color". She has a thing for sunsets.

About Hope's latest video. What about that gate with which it ends? What is it? Where does it lead to? It doesn't look like it's part of the observatory, where we thought she was heading.

I've been looking at the video again and from my understanding of some of the more fleeting images Hope drives into a complex that clearly states it is for authorised persons only - it appears to me that she isn't simply on a sight seeing tour but may have a more professional mandate for being there other than seeing a friend maybe? I'm wondering Schrijvertje if it really is a gate, in frame by frame you can allmost see a roof which makes me wonder if it's a bunker of some form.

I must admit I'm agreeing with Mokey in a big way, I don't think clues are being given to us in the form of cryptograms or encoded audio clues as has been suggested but in some form of thematic message as revealed by the videos - something like a rebus maybe or something more conceptual than cold hard code. It certainly has a resonance of an episode of Lost to me, the slow unveiling of a greater mystery.

I'm also in agreement with marnut that there's some hefty nods to personal politics along the way and it certainly can't be discounted that the schism between Hope and Hendler is simply down to am incompatible liberalism rather than some maniacal plot or diabloic action on one or either part. I know Mokey mentioned that she wondered if there was a message in the music and I think it might support Manut's theory about political divide. I know very little of the Dixie Chicks as they are virtually unknown here in the UK save to say that I believe 'I'm not ready to make Nice' was their response to the savage condemnation they received in some quarters for holding liberal views with regards to G W Bush and the invasion of Iraq. Seems to fit nicely with the ideas expressed.

PS I'm really stressed about the leotards! (Only joking thetownbike Laughing )

*WILD MUSINGS ALERT* I'm also chewing over the idea that this may have some links with Native American Theology as hinted at currently. I have found a Native American Starlore site hosted by the Western Washington University Planitarium and amongst the plethora of planetary realted lore there is a story which is an analogy of the passage of the sun through the sky. It tells the story of a jealous Sun who decides to kill the inhabitants of the earth by sending I assume solar flares to cause fevers. Unfortunately the suns daughter ends up dead and the sun is caused to grieve upon which the daughter is transformed into a red bird. Ultimately all is well but with themes of solar flares, daughters, fevers, redbirds, the death of children etc. all appearing I wondered if we are seeing something based on a theological exegesis rather than a scientific one.
Like I said - wild musings.

Now that sounds interesting indeed! Good job, Fizz!

Meanwhile, I've listened to the songs in Hope's last video. Here's the list of the lyrics in the order of appearance:

1. "Love Child" by Diana Ross
Quote:
rejected.
Love Child
never meant to

Quote:
Don't think I don't need ya,
Don't think I don't want to please ya
But no child of

Quote:
Misunderstood

http://www.lyrics007.com/Diana%20Ross%20Lyrics/Love%20Child%20Lyrics.html

2. "Not ready to make nice" by Dixie Chicks
Quote:
Forget, I'm not sure I could

Quote:
keep paying.
I'm not ready to make nice

Quote:
to do what it is

Quote:
I made by bed, and I sleep like a baby,
With no regrets and I don't mind saying

Quote:
That a mother will teach her daughter
that she ought to hate a perfect stranger

Quote:
shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/dixie-chicks/not-ready-to-make-nice-16996.html

Definitely a parent/child theme here.

That's some stunning aural detective work Schrijvertje, must have taken ages. I could barely catch any of the lyrics in the first track played.
So thematically we're back to the parental estrangement link. Here's hoping time will elucidate upon the reason for that schism.
You see, I'm thinking that neither character comes across as disagreeable, Hendler seems genuinely concerned about his daughters wellbeing and Hope seems a charming, educated, attractive young lady. There's hardly any real clue as to the nature of their conflict despite the glaring lack of a maternal element to their family life.
As Doggett once said "...dollars to doughnuts the Mother's the key..."
