Nope, I didn't.

As was mentioned, Nomoreparents.com is pretty empty, except for the smiley. Looks like this could be launchday.

Great find on the jhendler site, fizzcharlson. The fact that its registered by proxy, and contains both solar flare references screams in-game. I think we have to do two things:

1. Figure out his favorite number

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
My best guess is 149598. It's the significant figures of the astronomical unit figure, rounded off at the zeroes. When we weren't sure how to round it, fizz got the email:
Quote:
Look at terms nil.

Meaning round off at the "terms nil," or zeroes. We just don't know what to do with the numbers.

2. Figure out where his blog is.

Jhendler obviously wants us to find his personal blog. I've tried looking for a jhendler username on wordpress, livejournal, blogger, blogspot, myspace, last.fm, xanga.com, people.tribe.net, googlepages, and spaces.live.com to no avail. any ideas?

happy father's day!

Salutations danman_d I was seriously hoping you would lend your expertise to this. I have, like you, searched every blog under the sun for jhendler. I have searched for all the related words and topics, orbitas, solar flares, on and on but to no avail. I have emailed a possible solution to 'favourite number' but have yet to receive a reply and have checked youtube and all the usual candidates for any related videos. I'm beginning to think that this may have an element of the 'Lost' theory about it, someone dangling a carrot with no gameplan, simply reacting to whatever theory or action the participant throws at you.
Maybe I'm wrong but this feels shockingly random.

Search... for blog... making... me insane...

Okay, I've been trying words that look significant from the O list. I know Orbitas is one, but there are a few that have to do with "beginnings," etc. Still, nothing. Confused

Favorite number

Nix what I said earlier about the favorite number and rounding it at the zeroes. Google's version of the number was severely rounded as is, so the "terms nil" clue no longer seems relevant.

Actual, more accurate, possibly helpful figures:

Astronomical Unit: 149 597 870 691 ± 30 metres
Atomic Weight of Gold (Au): 196.966569  g·mol−1

I'd go with the astronomical unit instead of the atomic weight of gold. Just seems more logical.

So if the number is a distance, do we need the one in kilometres or miles?

Next question is, how "rounded" do we have to go? Just no decimals, or simply 150 million (or 93 million in miles)?

James Hendler uses a blog at Mindswap, http://www.mindswap.org/blog/author/hendler/, but it's also about the academic stuff and not really a personal blog. But it does seem to be the only blog of him you can find.

I saw that blog, too, but it looks like the blog of the real-life professor, and I thought we had decided his name was just a coincidence?

Still, it's nearly the only thing I can find with that name. The only other thing I turned up was what looked like a blog of a Jewish woman(?) who blogs under jhendler. http://tikvatisrael.org/

Nothing seems relevant yet...

Confused

Sorry, I missed that. I'm relieved, though, because no way could that James Hendler be involved. He's just too real.

Anyway, remember that word list? You can actually get lists of every letter by changing the url, like http://archives.nd.edu/aaa.htm and http://archives.nd.edu/yyy.htm (some letters have no pages, like W and Z).

These are pages in the archive of Notre Dame University.

I think the only reason we got this, is to confirm the meaning of "orbitas".

From the www.jhendler.com site, we see that Hendler is some kind of teacher. He has a physics class but also an RLL class (is that Romance Languages and Literature?)

I'm not familiar with American universities. Is it common for one professor to give classes in two different departments?

Neither Notre Dame department has a Hendler listing (that would've been too convenient!) There's a Glenn Hendler in the English department. Glenn seems like a fun guy, though. You should check his personal links. Especially the fake newspaper article and his nephew's site. But I'm sure he's got nothing to do with this.

Do we have something more on the Hendler identity? Can we ascertain it's a man or a woman? John, Julian, Jerome? Or Julie, Juanita, Janice?

What does "Look at terms nil" actually mean? I'm unfamiliar with the term. danman_d said it's about rounding off at the zeroes? At first I thought it was another anagram (minstrel).

I thought the same thing, but now I'm having doubts. James Hendler is obviously a brilliant man. This may be him. With his experience with the web, we may have become part of his "research". I'm no longer willing to throw him out as possibly the person behind this.

Not without a Ph.D. in each area. I have no clue what RLL stands for in relation to astronomy (or science in general), but I agree that the PHYS stands for physics, and not physical science as I previously proposed. Regardless, Latin is used all across the sciences in the US.

This could also be James Hendler. There is a picture of him giving a talk at the Jewish Agency in Jerusalem on his page at http://www.cs.umd.edu/~hendler/

Come to think of it, I'm not sure what that means, either, except that the e-mail says:

Quote:
Look at terms nil.

-a

I think you're on the right track with this being an anagram. And I'm thinking we need to use all the letters except the "a".

Of course, I could always be completely wrong on all of this.

Is it possible that 'look at terms nil' is 'look latin terms' i.e. the Notre Dame Latin Dictionary entry for the letter O? I too am convinced this is an anagram and have run it through several anagram generators looking for results in both English and Latin and nothing seemingly relevant emerges.

Whoever J Hendler is he/she does not teach at Notre Dame and as far as I can see no single Professor lectures on both Romance Language and Physics. I don't think this is James Hendler, it would be odd to create a game around your actual persona though I'm beginning to wonder if we were deliberately led to James Hendler for a reason.
I shall check back through the 'O' list for clues.

Have we determined why the cryptic email was signed "-a"? A for anagram? A for someone's name? -A for negative A (whatever that might mean)?

Confused

Conspiracy Theory

Think back if you will but this whole scenario came to a members attention via a blog that shared it's name with the mysterious site. It was Asher's blog and his annoyance that he was unable to secure the nomoreparents.com that aroused a members suspicion. upon checking his blog it seemed odd that there was only one update after the nomoreparents entry, one of the readers also commented that it seemed odd that the blog entries ended shortly after. Now as you may know I submitted an answer to the 'favourite number' enigma but received no reply but I received an email today that read:

Yes, the very same blog that alerted us to this mystery.
Have no idea what to make of this yet. But this blog writer is most certainly watching events.

Something I noticed this morning: sometimes when you try to go to the black page at www.nomoreparents.com, you're redirected to that blog page instead! So if it's not some quirky internet malfunction, I'd say they're definitely connected.

A Latin anagram of "look at terms nil" is "timent solor kal". Timent is fear. Solor is sun. Another anagram could be" timor solent kal", which actually means the same. Fear and sun. With "timor" you can also make "morti" which is death. But all of this still leaves "kal", which has no Latin meaning whatsoever.

What about http://www.myspace.com/jhendler? It's a Jason Hendler from Satellite Beach, Florida. Profile's set to private, so who knows? Care to contact him?

I came at My Space because I took another look at that nomoreparents.com blog page. The next to last comment is:

Quote:

Anybody notice the site changed?

June 16, 2007 1:49 PM

And ecapsym is an anagram of My Space.

Hey whats up guys? Im pretty new at this ARG thing, but I did work on thisisnotporn.com a while back. I was just thinking, theres a lot of different numbers involved with gold (atomic number, melting point, density). Are we positive that its the weight we need to be looking at? Just a thought...

*EDIT*

Just realized we may not be looking in terms of gold anymore. Sorry about that.
