[META] Why Pretend?

This post was a simple Question. Because I am not sure some of our actions are going to help! Why are a handful of players pretending to be pre-crash forum posters?

Now with that said, I know that one of us was invited into the Uber-secret layer. But, the more players jumping on that bandwagon, is drawing more attention to the fact that we can't be trusted. Some are more paranoid than others. But we need not give them any more reason to distrust us.

We already have our mole for as long as they allow them to be present. I don't think it is a good idea to push our trust boundary any further than it already is. Lets let our mole do their job. The rest of us need to work on gaining the trust of the Sentries. Just my opinion, but I don't want them to shut us completely off because we deceived them.

I have some feeling that a division may occur somewhere along the line in the story, and your introduction will decide which side you get 'put' on.

Besides, those of us pretending to be pre-crash (well, at least me) are willing to sacrifice the sentries' trust for us to improve their trust for you.

Good enough reasoning for me! Wink

Yeah, I didn't understand that either. I recognized two nicks with join dates after the site was found, and both pretending to be pre-crash folks. Interesting choice to be made. I wonder how the PMs will handle it. Cause there is no way the player can know pre-crash stuff if push comes to shove.

I roleplay all the time in games (never admit to being married, younger than my real age, etc) but never beyond my knowledge base.

So, on that note: Hmmmm...which character should I try flirting with to get more information (since that is my usual MO)?

I always wondered how you were going to explain making yourself the daughter of two characters, if the PM wanted to mess with you.

Just to make sure we're all on the same page, I never intended to portray myself as pre-crash. My post said "... this community that you've built ..."

Though I was addressed in an abiguous manner by Mkaos, so I responded in an equally ambiguos manner. I guess that turned out to mean that I was 'one of them' though that was never my intention. ^^;

In anycase, I'll continue doing all that I can given my current position.

Thanks Xestrix anyway! I do have to say there is a lot of detail in this. creating a sub forum and only inviting a few players into it to as one put it "copy and paste it to a secretive forum" The PMs have deffinetly gone above and beyond. This is almost to real. It has me still questioning the forum, even though I whoised both sites. Weird huh!

I completely agree. The shear normality of this entire thing, and the depth of real-life personality these characters have makes it very easy to forget we're playing an ARG, even knowing the information we have, it still feels like this is all real. I love how smoothly put together all of this is!

Heh, that's actually something that's come up for me in other contexts -- it's really hard for PMs to clearly communicate to players when it's "safe" for them to do something like role-play being part of the in-game world (i.e. having background knowledge of it), or, say, writing about it, or in any way inserting themselves into the story in a way beyond the roles explicitly laid out for them.

I think if you want your players to feel they can do that, you have to communicate very clearly that you're not then going to undermine them.

So far I'm getting a lot of mixed signals. Confused

I thought that the PMs had essentially invited players to pretend to be pre-crash forum members.

Maybe we'll be surprised and another fifty old sentries will show up next just having been too busy in January to re-register. But it's more likely that we'll be rebuilding from our smaller core group, where each of us is important.

Seems like, but Marie's pointed out that at least one of the people claiming to be a pre-crash Sentry has the same IP as a newcomer, which sounds like they're threatening us to call the bluff it seems like they seemed to invite us to make elsewhere.

I never meant to cause any trouble..

I simply was roleplaying as if I had been a precrash lurker... Only because on the site they stated that old members needed to re register... so I thought that was inviting the roleplay....

That's what it looked like to me, too. Smile

You haven't caused any trouble! Congrats on getting into the secret forum.

I'm just not entirely sure what the PMs are trying to get us to do, here, but that's their responsibility to communicate clearly, not ours to discern...well...psychically. Wink

Yes, well hindsight is 20/20, but I think the hints on the blog about this were ambiguous. From the April 13 post:

Quote:
So, please, if you're still checking in, take the time to register an account and say hi. We'd love to see you and hear what you've been up to the past few months! And, if you're just finding us for the first time, Welcome! You came at the perfect time! So hop on over to the wiki and learn a bit more about us and the pop on over to the forums and let us know a bit more about you and your interests and of any great news you've heard in the past few weeks.

They seem to be welcoming both old-timers and newcomers. Speaking for myself, I know that it seemed more straightforward to go ahead and join as a newcomer, because then I could just be 'myself' and wouldn't have to make up a story about where I've been for the past 6 months. But then they started to challenge the reasons for the influx of new people, so clearly that was the wrong way to go.

So I'm getting the same mixed signals...

They could be stalling and waiting for all the packages to arrive and come together.
