Thanks for the praise guys Surprised but I agree we're going to struggle without something else.

Agreed!

The other possibility is that while www is tempting it could be wrong. If this is a cryptic clue it usually leads to one word or phrase that once you've got it makes sense (sometimes).

Also noted - but the www just seemed to fit so well.

Oh well, I've not got much work on today so I'll keep at it but I'm not expecting much.

Has anyone tried to catch Fairborn (bornfairdiefair) on AIM and see if they can get another clue or talk over what people have come up with so far?

I've been watching for him and I've emailed him twice. No response, and he hasn't shown up on AIM as far as I know. He could be ghosting.

If this would be the kind of cryptic crossword hint I am used to, it would end up being the word "triathalon" (three-part sporting achievement) with something else (the word "it" or "in"?) either inserted ("smothered" being used as "forced") into the word, or those letters removed from the word ("smothered" being used as "covering" or "hiding").
Does that help?
But, I have to admit, the www part is *very* clever if that's what it is!
Just my two cents. Smile

P.S. What about "trifecta", as well?

P.P.S. And...what do we DO with the answer when we get it?

I still think "Turkey" (3 strikes in a row, in bowling) fits well and turkey can also be "smothered" in gravy.
Or possibly "Turkey gravy" to better fit the riddle.
I also don't see what the contact needs to have done based on solving the enigma, though.

Yah, I'm talking to him.

*sigh*

We're off the hook for the first clue and have been given a different challenge.

[13:46] bornfairdiefair: Hello?
[13:46] bornfairdiefair: Hello?
[13:46] bornfairdiefair: Sorry for not contacting you.. I had somewhere to go.
[13:46] JWtheFourth: I'm here.
[13:46] bornfairdiefair: Paradox phoned me.
[13:46] JWtheFourth: What did he say?
[13:46] bornfairdiefair: On...saturday night.
[13:46] bornfairdiefair: He told me that there was an envelope coming for me the next day.
[13:47] bornfairdiefair: When i opened it up, it contained a theaa.com route to somewhere in Birmingham.
[13:47] bornfairdiefair: I went to where it showed me. It was a hotel.
[13:48] bornfairdiefair: There was a package for me - It was a CD file
[13:48] bornfairdiefair: It took me till today to get back.
[13:48] JWtheFourth: What was on the CD?
[13:48] bornfairdiefair: On the CD's a zip file, with a password set.
[13:49] bornfairdiefair: You know how it can set like a comment thing before the password?
[13:49] JWtheFourth: Yah, what does it say?
[13:49] bornfairdiefair: It had a number
[13:49] bornfairdiefair: 7
[13:50] JWtheFourth: That's it?
[13:50] bornfairdiefair: Aye.
[13:50] bornfairdiefair: Any lick with the clue?
[13:50] JWtheFourth: Vaguely.
[13:50] JWtheFourth: We believe it's what is known as a cryptic crossword.
[13:50] bornfairdiefair: Well..
[13:51] JWtheFourth: But have been beating our head on it.
[13:51] bornfairdiefair: I think I've solved it
[13:51] JWtheFourth: Oh?
[13:51] bornfairdiefair: I found his book before I set off to Birmingham
[13:52] bornfairdiefair: I took a read through it, and i found the answer.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
[13:52] bornfairdiefair: TRINITY
[13:53] bornfairdiefair: Explanton:
[13:53] bornfairdiefair: A try's a sporting acheivement.
[13:53] JWtheFourth: surrounding IN IT

[13:53] bornfairdiefair: the words "in" and "it" are smothered in it
[13:53] bornfairdiefair: Exactly.
[13:53] JWtheFourth: 7 is a reference to the number of letters
[13:53] bornfairdiefair: Anyhoo, inside the zipfile was a picture..
[13:54] JWtheFourth: Oooo
[13:54] bornfairdiefair: of my son, in a bedroom somewhere.
[13:54] bornfairdiefair: I don't really wanna give it out.
[13:54] bornfairdiefair: Secretive..
[13:55] JWtheFourth: If you don't share it, I'm not sure how we can help (though admittedly, we didn't do so well on the last)
[13:55] bornfairdiefair: *grins*
[13:55] bornfairdiefair: I don't think there's anything hidden wivi t.
[13:56] bornfairdiefair: Oh yeah.. at the bottom half of the picture are the words "To let the son out, something has to leave"
[13:56] bornfairdiefair: Don't know what that means.
[13:57] JWtheFourth: What's in the picture?
[13:57] bornfairdiefair: My son, in a bedroom.
[13:57] bornfairdiefair: It's not his normal bedroom.
[13:58] bornfairdiefair: It has one of those "sleazy-motel-room"looks, from the films.
[13:58] bornfairdiefair: Hmm..
[13:58] bornfairdiefair: I have somewhere talking to me, calls himself one of your friends.
[13:58] bornfairdiefair: Degravedi
[13:58] JWtheFourth: Yes!
[13:59] JWtheFourth: He's one of the people trying to help

Hmmmm...Trinity makes sense in a cryptic crossword way. I never would have thought of "try", though. Did we know it was only going to be seven letters? That's one things most cryptic crosswords do to make things a bit easier...tell you how many letters it's going to be.
Now, "To let the son out, something has to leave". Is this "son = sun" wordplay? What has to leave before the sun comes out. The moon? Night? Darkness?
And how does Trinity fit into all of this?

AIM update: Some of it's a repeat of info from Jwiv's post. The main new stuff is in bold.

Quote:
bornfairdiefair (1:09:17 PM): Hallo.
Degravedi (1:09:23 PM): Hello all.
bornfairdiefair (1:09:25 PM): Anyone want a rhetorical cup of tea?
CissMiace (1:09:28 PM): Hiiiii
bornfairdiefair (1:09:44 PM): Anyway.
bornfairdiefair (1:10:01 PM): The reason i havent been on for a while, is because Paradox phoned me on Saturday night.
CissMiace (1:10:17 PM): What did he say?
bornfairdiefair (1:10:22 PM): I was literally getting a case of the bad Saturday Night Fever when he rang me.
bornfairdiefair (1:10:37 PM): He told me i was getting a package in the mail tomorrow - Which is amazing, thinking post doesn't work on sunday.
bornfairdiefair (1:10:47 PM): None the less, i got a package.
bornfairdiefair (1:10:58 PM): Inside was a theaa.com route plan to a hotel in Birmingham.
CissMiace (1:11:40 PM): Did he possibley hand deliver the package!?
bornfairdiefair (1:11:52 PM): I arrived there on Sunday night, and found i had a reservation in the hotel, and a package there waiting for me.
bornfairdiefair (1:12:04 PM): I stayed there for the night, and drove home on monday - arriving late.
bornfairdiefair (1:12:07 PM): Possibly.
CissMiace (1:12:43 PM): If you dont mind me asking, what did the package contain?
bornfairdiefair (1:12:43 PM): Anyway, inside the package was a cd.
bornfairdiefair (1:12:50 PM): With a zip file, locked with a password.
bornfairdiefair (1:13:00 PM): It had a comment thing before the password.. just the number 7.
bornfairdiefair (1:13:41 PM): Anyway, whilst inside the hotel.. i started reading that Young Bond book, that i took with me.
bornfairdiefair (1:13:44 PM): I found the answer to the clue.
bornfairdiefair (1:13:49 PM): It was Trinity#
bornfairdiefair (1:14:00 PM): Bugger. Dramatic effect ruined by a "#"
bornfairdiefair (1:14:33 PM): Anyway, i put in the password to the zipfile, and it opened
bornfairdiefair (1:14:39 PM): It contained one picture(That i shall not give out)
bornfairdiefair (1:15:19 PM): It was a picture of my son, in a sleazy-motel-type bedroom.
bornfairdiefair (1:15:38 PM): And on the bottom half of the picture was the words "To let the son out, something has to leave."
bornfairdiefair (1:16:32 PM): So..
bornfairdiefair (1:16:39 PM): You are the brainstormers, the "brain trust"
CissMiace (1:16:41 PM): Goodness
bornfairdiefair (1:16:44 PM): Get trusting, or something.
JWtheFourth (1:16:46 PM): Is it night?
Degravedi (1:16:49 PM): Indeed
bornfairdiefair (1:16:52 PM): Possible..
bornfairdiefair (1:16:57 PM): But what do i do with that?
CissMiace (1:17:33 PM): What if its another play on words, he seams to like that. What if its Knight
bornfairdiefair (1:17:50 PM): ...
bornfairdiefair (1:17:52 PM): Oh shit.
bornfairdiefair (1:17:56 PM): The phone's ringing..
CissMiace (1:18:17 PM): Is it him?
bornfairdiefair (1:18:25 PM): Goddamn it, it is.
bornfairdiefair (1:18:32 PM): Hang on,, i'll transcribe it
CissMiace (1:18:41 PM): sure
bornfairdiefair (1:20:14 PM): "Congratulations are in order on your solving the first clue. There is a sentence on the picture inside the zip. I understand you have been having problems with the clues so far. It is, indeed, as JWtheFourth says, night."
Degravedi (1:21:12 PM): Did you tell him that? Is he monitoring us?
bornfairdiefair (1:21:15 PM): "But what to do? The noun, the word, and the numeral. In times like these, I always like to think of Robin Hood. He always shot what he aimed at"
CissMiace (1:21:16 PM): How did he know?!
bornfairdiefair (1:21:53 PM): "Goodbye, Mr. Fairborn. And yes, Degravedi. I am monitoring you."
bornfairdiefair (1:22:01 PM): Phone went dead.
Degravedi (1:22:18 PM): Well that's just creepy
CissMiace (1:22:23 PM): Holy crap
Degravedi (1:22:53 PM): The noun the word and the numeral
CissMiace (1:23:06 PM): Does anyone else have acces to your computer?
JWtheFourth (1:23:07 PM): I I I
bornfairdiefair (1:23:07 PM): Night's a noun..
bornfairdiefair (1:23:16 PM): Obvious the numeral is 7.

bornfairdiefair (1:23:24 PM): No..
Degravedi (1:23:36 PM): He could have hacked your computer..
CissMiace (1:23:41 PM): yeah...
Degravedi (1:23:47 PM): Anyway. Trinity as the word maybe?
Degravedi (1:23:56 PM): Night Trinity 7
Degravedi (1:24:29 PM): word is so general..
bornfairdiefair (1:24:46 PM): Text on my phone.. "This is jst the 1st stge. "wordnounnumber""
bornfairdiefair (1:24:54 PM): This is flipping freaking me out.
CissMiace (1:25:15 PM): Im not surprised, he seems to know everything your doing
bornfairdiefair (1:26:37 PM): Why did he go on about Robin Hood?
CissMiace (1:27:23 PM): Well shoot what he aimed at, could be target?
Degravedi (1:27:38 PM): bullseye?
bornfairdiefair (1:27:45 PM): Maybe it's the words he actually used.
bornfairdiefair (1:28:22 PM): I gotta go..
Degravedi (1:28:37 PM): Well, we'll work on this.
bornfairdiefair (1:28:38 PM): I put tea in before i came on, and i came on for longer than i thought i would be.
bornfairdiefair (1:28:43 PM): Probably burning.
CissMiace (1:28:47 PM): We'll keep brainstorming so we can help you
bornfairdiefair (1:28:50 PM): Bye.
CissMiace (1:28:56 PM): Bye, take care
bornfairdiefair (1:28:56 PM): Go storm! Or something.
bornfairdiefair (1:29:00 PM) has left the room.

Well, I am intrigued, but I also have to admit that I am stumped. Googling "Knight" and "Trinity" brings up some stuff about the Freemasons and the Knight Templars, but nothing that strikes me as concrete. Sad
Are we sure that 7 is the number we are looking for? I thought 7 told us how many letters were in the word? So, if the word is Trinity, could the number we need possibly be 3?
Maybe we need to figure out the Robin Hood reference, and then go from there? This thing with the word, noun, and number sound a lot like what someone's username would consist of. Possibly a blog?

Or an AIM name. I didn't respond because I'm damnably busy at work, but here ya go.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

[15:19] trinity7night: Tique. Toque. Tique. Toque.
[15:21] trinity7night: Mr. Fairborn's son is getting worried..
[15:27] trinity7night: Where, oh where could his son be?

Hmmmm, but the word, noun, and number pattern seems to be different than what the text message says.
But I get the Robin Hood reference now...AIM. Very Happy
