Don't Mean To BUG You...

The crickets could refer to Nyarlathotep. One of his many "Masks" is known as the "Crawling Chaos".

The form of this is often described as a mass of crawling insects in a humanoid form.

Nyarlathotep, also know as the Black Pharaoh, is said to be the messenger between those gods that live at the center of the world and the outer gods.

He is known by many faces, or "Masks". As I mentioned before, Dr. D, a faceless hacker is one of his faces in the modern world.

Just keeping the Mythos Links Kicking...

This is really good information.. keep it coming!

Say more about 'Dr. D' -- could this be related to our hacker/security friends?

Dr. D is a new mask of The Black Pharaoh. Created as a new mask for a modern day Cthulhu RPG game, it has been accepted by the Lovecraft Circle at Large as cannon.

I think the cricket connection is to the Necronomicon. Lovecraft attributes this ancient text to the writings of "the mad arab" Abdul Alhazred, who heard the secrets of the dead in the whispers of crickets in the desert.

Hmmm. HPHack seems to be going mad with the sound of the crickets in his place? Any way to shut those things up? Raid? Some ancient Mesopotamian chant?

CATS.

You think I was kidding? Wink

Golly, and our lovely psychic friend just happens to have an avatar that's a black cat. Maybe she is the solution to the problem (whatever it is) after all. Smile

Using Mythos To Fight Mythos

Quote:

You want to get really lost... Then here's a question for anyone out there.

This is an Alternate Reality Game... What are the rules of this new reality?

Is this a world where the Mythos truly exists? Was the writings of HP Lovecraft just the ramblings of a madman trying to make sense of what he saw?

I'll tell you one thing, if this Alternate Reality is a place where the Mythos is real, baby.., it's time to start using it for my own evil purposes.

Weather the author's know it or not, they have put in place all the steps needed to take care of finding the Crazy Cat Lady in motion.

So please tell me this Alternate world is one where the Mythos truly exists. I really want a TPK!!!

That's part of what we're trying to figure out. Smile

In an in-game sense, I don't know. I'd say that H.P. Lovecraft exists in the world of the game, and is known as an author, because of HPHack's response to a question about his initials being the same as Lovecraft's:

HPHack wrote:
Normally I'd just groan at your observation, people have been making that joke since college. My HP is my initials, Howard Philips. As in the author. No, my parents didn't read much. Tonight this feels more like the bitter irony the whole universe is soaked in.

That said, I find it hard to believe that the mythos won't exist in some form as part of the reality of the game. So, my money's on the in-game discovery that Lovecraft's works actually told the truth.[/quote]

Done!

My strategy, if you can call it that, is just to act as I would if I'd joined this forum "legitimately." Make bets, talk about social networking, etc. This is the obvious course of action for me, because of my inherently geeky nature.

My money is on some kind of geeky vigilante justice. They posted somewhere or other about people finding out the real names and addresses of hackers/spammers, and then these people ended up dead. I wouldn't be surprised if at some point we find out that either the Sentries have taken things a bit too far, or that we have inadvertently become accomplices to something of the sort.

Shocked

Guess I haven't read through everything as thoroughly as I should have. Do you have that quote/link?
