Current speculation in #stfeline is that each Sentry corresponds to one of the stories on our package-induced reading list.

If you look at the userlist, you'll the the Sentry Outpost Crew as listed, but the first name listed after theirs is "sentry," also a site admin, with no posts.

Anyone else curious?

Hi there, I'm still new to this whole ARG thing as I'd mentioned in a thread for one of the other games, and only really started following this one once the sentry outpost angle was introduced. While I freely admit that perhaps I'm reading WAAY too much into this, not too long ago I personally had an experience similar to what these characters at the sentryoutpost had gone through and I can definitely see a lot of parallels to what myself and boardmates did under the same circumstances. I must say that I hope that this crew is with the game for the long-haul. They seem like fun.

As I think most boards that get hacked do, the core group of participants - in my board's case as well as the sentry outpost case, it seems the original core group and the current one are not all the same, and people who might have been a bit more marginal in pre-hack sentry world have more influence in the post-hack one - but at any rate the board members circle the wagons and become exceptionally defensive, as we've seen here.

Despite the desire to rebuild even better than what you were at before the hack (which presumably is the point of anyone who does bring a board back rather than just let it die), and despite the desire to get new members you definitely become nervous with and suspicious of anyone new. I know anytime I get more than one new sign-up in a day, I go through and save every thread of interest onto my computer to prepare for the worst and another potential rebuild. Although I like to think we did a better job of not broadcasting that paranoia and stress ("tired and overworked" would definitely describe myself and the people rebuilding the first few months after the hack) to any of the potential members, I'm sure we had our moments much like these characters have had (and of course, wouldn't be much of a game if their chicken little moments happened in private IM chats offboard that we don't have access to).

Bringing up the comment I'm quoting on here, one of the first things we did at my board post-hack was to create new layers of security, including a figurehead "admin" that never posts and a second layer of moderators (the real power of the board) who all have access to that account to do the admin related things. Keeping the admin out of sight can at least avoid some problems down the road if people decide they want to attack the board, they're less likely to go after the real "power" of the board if they don't know they exist. That sort of thing wouldn't stop everyone, but it could keep at least some potential troublemakers at bay. That could at least account for the admin who never posts, and if need be - gaining access to that account might well be one of the things game participants will be tasked with.

Also, as commented earlier in the thread, another thing we did at my board was take the opportunity to redefine, or to borrow a term from comic books, to retcon a little of our site's history, the original admin and board founder (as well as the circumstances of its founding) are more or less downplayed in the new incarnation, focusing on the most recent history. It's possible that the reason why the Sentry Outpost history doesn't really mention much pre-2005 is attempting the same thing - especially if some of those missing members I'm theorizing about are suspected of either abandoning the board as a result of the hack or might be suspects in the hack itself. I think that once people start to get closer to the core group, they might start to see a little more of the board's background and history - a little throwaway comment could potentially open up discussion down the line of the board's history pre-2005.

This might well be obvious, but based on my experiences (assuming again that I'm not reading too much into it) "Mkaos/Marie" is going to be the key to unravelling a lot of the mysteries of the board. She seems to be the one pushing all the buttons, driving the tech guy to make changes, to bring back features she liked and make changes to the things that she didn't, she either initiates discussion or is one of the first people to respond to it - definitely a type A personality. She's the one who is shaping what the Sentry Outpost is and she's basically the one defining it (even controlling the FAQ), but if my experience has tought me anything - I don't think that she was quite as powerful pre-hack as she appears to be now. That's not to say that I suspect she was involved in the board hack in the first place, but it does make me at least a little suspicious of her and her intentions. If I'm right, coincidence or not, she (and her allies) might well have pulled a coup d'etat here.

My apologies for droning on so long, just some random thoughts and speculation

Lots of great stuff!

Wow, I really like your insights, and it makes a lot of sense. We'll definitely have to watch these board members and see what happens..

So, since you brought up the central importance of Marie/Mkaos, I was taking another look at her possible craiglist, below, and agree that it seems to make sense if she is the one who's been monitoring the membership of SO, counting who's joined and returned, trying to keep it going. Hrmm..

I've had it in my head that Mkaos co-owned the site with Themagician, Mkaos being the main content provider and Themagician his personal tech support/software engineer. If that's true it makes sense to me that Mkaos would also be top dog at the forums, before and after the crash. Did anybody else come away with that impression?

So we have tied HPhack into this whole deal, mostly because of his strange name. But has anyone else noticed Hiro Protagonist is this just another coincidence or am I just being paranoid myself.

"Hiro Protagonist" is the protagonist's name in Neal Stephenson's book, Snow Crash. Stephenson also wrote a book called Cryptonomicon. Hmm... Cryptonomicon.... Necronomicon.... Confused

I don't think GMD would use fake players.

Since this thread is about new people, I think I should introduce myself.
My current alias is Hiro Protagonist, but the people from UF might remember me as David Hayter
