[Puzzle/Solved] Red Numbers

In each of the packages received thus far, there has been a page with red writing with several numbers on it (for instance, "385, 11, 30". You can apply a "book cipher" to this, wherein the first number is the page, the second the line, and the third the letter. Using the book "Call of the Cthulhu" as a solving guide, and the above method, the letters we have so far are: T_NT_Y_UT_OST.

*the underlines represent the missing letters.

**eta a better explanation - thanks mapmaker for the words Very Happy

Hmm, limited number of things it could be at the end, I think:

BOOST
COST
FROST
GHOST
HOST
LOST
MOST
POST
ROOST

correction: only one black at the end - T_OST, not two. Total 13 letters so far

T-NT-Y-UT-OST

Thank you for pointing that out, my finger lingered on the key to long. Very Happy
Sorry Phae for making you do all that work for the wrong number of letters.

Adding to Phaedra's list:
UTMOST

(could be "ye utmost", but that "t" at the very beginning throws off every spec I could make for that sort of phrase...)

Lovecraft does have a poem titled "The Outpost", with mention of palace flares ablaze and a great king who fears to dream as well as towers ... but then it sort of seems to go into something about humanoid "ancient Fishers from Outside"....

Dunno just puttering...

With all the people leaving the city a la refugees.... maybe there's a wrong letter somewhere, but I'm thinking "TENT CITY OUTPOST"?

Although I'm completely lost on how it was figured out, I seem to remember someone saying something about 15 letters...

In all the packages, there was a book page that had red writing on it (an i ching phrase and a series of three numbers). These are the only pages we are concerning ourselves with for this particular puzzle.

The page numbers for each of the 'i ching pages' were xx5 / xx6, and the series of numbers written on them were all yy5. Once this was noticed, it was just a small leap to think that maybe there was a connection between the two - especially after it was noted that two of the written numbers matched up with pages we already have received, 45 and 335.

Ideally, we would have pictures of all the pages that were sent out, and we could see that they paired up nicely. However, since we don't, we did the next best thing. enaxor managed to snag a copy of the same book that the 'i ching pages' came out of, so we could fill in the pages that were referenced but not yet found.

The red number code stood for "Page Number - Line - Letter", so 45, 1, 6 would be page 45 (that Varin received), first line, sixth letter: a T. The duplicate i ching phrases gave the same letter, providing a redundancy in the puzzle. We're also using the i ching phrases to order the letters, so 'The Creative' number sequence references the first letter, 'Difficulty at the Beginning' references the third letter, etc.

Make sense? Now we just have to wait to find out what the other number sequences are to fill in the gaps.

How do we know it's page -> line -> letter and not page -> line -> word?

No wait, there numbers are too high - there's not liable to be 25 or 30 words in a single line. Answered my own question.

i believe there may be an error in the puzzle...

instead of a "T" for the first letter, it may be a "S" (maybe supposed to be 45,1,3 instead of 45,1,6?). if that's the case, the letters we have would be: S-NT-Y-UT-POST

this led me to www.sentryoutpost.com

very briefly skimmed the site and didn't see any connection to www.bseeingu.com. but then saw the whois:

Well if this part of the game, it might explain some connection to the use of 2600 magazine..

I would agree and have been searching for similar for two days ya wee bugger! Wink

After having been involved in creating forum content for MHC - I would (before reading everything completely) hazard a guess that this is definitely IG stuff, with the convenient sparse forum excuse of:

Quote:
1. What Happened to the Old Sentry Boards?
There was a corruption on the server and everything that we had was affected, including the boards. Everything is tangled up in a twisty knot and, despite Bryce's best efforts, he hasn't been able to make sense of it all.

2. Will My Precious Old Thread Be Lost Forever?

The short answer: Yes.
The longer answer: We hope not. Bryce is working on recovering everything that he can. So far, there's little hope to go on. But, he is Themagician, so we might get lucky.
