Characters: The Sentry Outpost Crew

I matched up the SentryOutpost characters with the presumed Craigslists...it looks like GetMEout and Politicaltexan were in an earlier batch (April 17) if they've showed up at all yet. No location info on themagician, sentry, or makim.

The Sentry Outpost Crew

Mkaos (Marie): San Francisco, CA
Quote:
Standing at the base of the mountain - w4w
You: Counting the souls
Me: Wondering what's the point.

Tens? Hundreds? Thousands? Did it matter? Does it now?

HPhack (Howard): Cambridge, MA
Quote:
Standing at the edge of madness - w4m
You: The one covering your eyes
Me: The one opening them

You will never forget the things you've seen and you can never change the things that you don't. The more you close your eyes, the worse it gets. I know.

EconJen (Jen): Giant Red Delicious
Quote:
Midnight meetings - w4w

You: Holding the shovel
Me: Avoiding the holes

Even here, in this cursed metropolis, you dig. When you get up in the morning, are you covered in dirt?

Y2KVeteran (Arthur Lyndon): Boulder, CO
Quote:
Over by the citadel - w4m
You: Thinking you're safe
Me: Knowing you're not

Do you sleep easier here even knowing what you know? Seeing what you see? This is beyond imagination. This is real. There is no safe place. You know it as well as I do and, yet, here you stand. Does it make it easier?

Politicaltexan (Alan): Austin, TX ( from the April 17 batch)
Quote:
The guy in the hat at the airport bar - w4m

You: Sitting there going on about all things evil
Me: Wondering if you know what evil really is.

It's headed your way. Ground yourself for the surge.

GetMEout (Kevin): Crapel Hill ( from the April 17 batch)
Quote:
The freakiest freak in the show - w4m

You: Not afraid to tell it like it is
Me: Not afraid to tell you like it is

You don't have a clue. You think you do, but you don't. Madness is headed your way and you are going to love every minute of it.

I'm thinking this deserves a thread of it's own "[BASt] In Game Characters" or something like that (along with starting another one for websites). But I lack the ability to split this wonderful post from the main trailhead. Maybe one of the Potentials mods can do that?

I've been looking around but haven't had any luck so far finding these people anywhere else on the net. None of them have a flickr account, at least not under the same username - I was checking flickr because of the 2600 article about flickr hacking.

Oh, also: Do you think we should tell the SOers about their Craigslist postings? I told HPhack about his, but should we tell the rest of them? Ms. Feline did tell us to "the tell the others."

Craigslist are public postings. I don't see that it would be wrong to point them out - link or even post & link to the Craigslist.

Very odd... maybe a PM error (Gasp)..maybe something else.
We learned of Y2Kveteran's name, Arthur Lyndon, via this edit to the SO wiki. (The comments left between GetMEout and Y2kveteran show a strained relationship.)
Yet, Y2Kveteran has this as a signature:

Hmm, is it Lyndon or Lydney? Or I'm I misunderstanding? Confused

Many thanks to the people organising this and updating the wiki! Two things:

1. They've clearly done some character development, so we have a set of the "usual suspects" found on a forum. (eg we have the "I'm grumpy and going to argue with everyone" guy) Would it be all right to include this in the character info?

2. If you're interested in what Themagician's sig file is, it's a UNIX joke. Here's a list: http://pintopc.home.cern.ch/pintopc/www/cois&lois/Unix_err.htm

It looks like Y2Kveteran is implying that GetMEout is behind the whole thing. Which makes sense given GetMEout's comments in the Pandora's Thumbdrive thread

On the otherhand, Y2Kvetern could just be being mean.

I think you're right that that's what Y2Kveteran's referring to. I think he's just being mean, but I'm personally having a hard time figuring out how deep the feelings run between the Sentries. I mean, some of this might be good-natured ribbing, but there really seems to be deep-seated animosity between people there.

Maybe they're starting to go insane. Shocked HPHack sounds like he's on the edge too, poor guy.

They all seem pretty overworked, not getting enough sleep, etc. Also (and I may be reading too much into this) a little paranoid and defensive.

And there's all these mentions, all over the forums, about using social engineering and viruses towards good ends.

And there's that Field Work section with no posts in it.

And we have basically no information about what the Sentries were up to before January 05.

Maybe they're working on something? Something they don't want us to know about.

I thought out would flesh some of the character's not so obvious signature quotes a bit more:

HpHack's sig line is a quote from the dali lama:

"I call the light and high aspects of my being spirit and the dark and heavy aspects soul.

Soul is at home in the deep, shaded valleys.
Heavy torpid flowers saturated with black grow there.
The rivers flow like warm syrup. They empty into huge oceans of soul.

Spirit is a land of high white peaks and glittering jewel-like lakes and flowers.
Life is sparse and sounds travel great distances.

There is soul music, soul food, and soul love...

People need to climb the mountain not simple because it is there
But because the soulful divinity needs to be mated with the spirit."
-Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dali Lama

Mkaos' quote is from the grateful dead song Saint Stephen:

"Did he doubt or did he try?
Answers a-plenty in the by and by
Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills
One man gathers what another man spills "

Econjen's quote is from emily dickinson's poem# 670:

"One need not be a Chamber — to be Haunted –
One need not be a House –
The Brain has Corridors — surpassing
Material Place
"

GetMEout's quote is from marshall mcluhan:

"The artist is a person who is expert in the training of perception."

Themagician's occupation listing from her profile 'BOFH':

is listed in wikipedia as a character from an online fiction: the Bastard Operator From Hell: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BOFH

If you look at the userlist, you'll the the Sentry Outpost Crew as listed, but the first name listed after theirs is "sentry," also a site admin, with no posts.

Anyone else curious?

VERY curious about sentry and makim (the one after sentry)--I find it odd that the two lurkers are also the last two to rejoin.
