Gave up on the gargoyle and i seem to have gone a different path

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Saw ML moving her head to indicate "no". I orginally thought it was a cool dead end but i got to thinking and threw the name into the URL and now i got a woman in red with what looks like a ferret.

I'm not sure how you skipped around it, but you are still on the same path as the rest of us.

Skipped? Most odd.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Got to get that one last bit of the code on Gargoyle. Spent an hour looking at it thinking "where have i seen this cipher style before?" then it hit me.

Particularly in the art section, with its narrow subject matter, you could skip ahead a little bit by providing a right answer to any other frame.

Edit: finally on to the blocks page.. the thread seems to have gone very quiet, hopefully not everyone has packed up and gone home from Torment!

I have skipped many levels so it seems.. Lucky I guess...i only saw 2 of the artworks and from what I read of the "lower" levels I missed more.
But I must say I am stuck at beardface...
since I skipped I didnt get the chance to "learn my lesson" I need help!!!!

[PUZZLE TRAIL] "Torment"
A Newbie...y'all are gonna make mincemeat outta me

Embarassed
I encountered this site via CTV.
I have been perusing your board for a couple of days.
I have gathered that y'all are in an entirely different league than myself.
I'll explain:
Myst...took me three years to solve.
Riven...ummm still working on it.
All the others in the series...dusty.
I'm as stubborn as all get out so I refuse to go to the hint webpages.
If anything I am patient, yes?
I have no idea how to get in this game.
I have tried for three days.
If I hear Karen Carpenter one more time...ACK.
If someone would kindly get me started perhaps I will get the knack, or not.
I am here for the same reason y'all are, I want to play a good game and have fun.
You are obviously the elite the top of the ladder so to speak.
I can't even open the dang ladder.

 [PUZZLE TRAIL] "Torment"
practicing typing in all small caps.

Too funny.
I got it.
Can you believe it?

Oopps...so sorry!
I took up bandwidth space not realizing that there is no time limit on the editing of posts.

As you can see by the timestamp, I am again stuck (on the wingled gal in the forest.)
I tried to see if I could get some sort of hint by reading the posts here.
I have gotten the idea I am going to need a fair amount of hints, thus breaking my rule while I play my Myst series adventure.
I did a search on this board.
I did see some helpful suggestions to other member's having trouble with this 2nd puzzle.
~look at the entire picture, ~shed some light, ~and a post describing the trees with the missing letter p in "up".
Try and be patient with me as I am old and feeble and apparently dumb as a dinner plate.
My headache has moved to my nether regions.
~optical illusion~? ~Tree partially blocking wing~?
~illumination~? ~researched deja vu and symbol on leg~

edit to add:
This is just a quick note to those who have pm'd me.
Many thanks for your kindness, it is much appreciated.
I cannot tell you how much time and research I devoted to the picture.
Needless to say, I am wayyyyy out of my league here.
I think that I am able to learn fairly quickly what is required to play these games.
It is also a hoot that many people come together to try and solve a game.
Very intriguing, and a wonderful way to bond with those of similar interests.
I just need to decide if I want to devote so much time learning and attempting to play these very difficult games.
Again, thanks ever so much for helping me.
My apologies to the moderator, this post is very long.
I will cooperate and follow board rules from now on.

~tuit~ aka salmon...or is it small mouthed bass?...Trout!!! That's IT! Dunce Screwy

Blocks page

Anyone else still working on this?

If we assume Gecko's hint relating to the Poe "Shadow" poem is merely a reference to a way of using the slugs/snails (ie analagous to the Circles page), then where does the girl with halo picture fit in??? I have learned that there is a computer game called "halo" about an entity which is an AI "girl" and was wondering if anyone here might be familiar enough with that game to speculate whether it might give us a nudge regarding a way to solve the blocks page since reference to shadows alone hasn't got me too far!

Just a long shot...

I think everyone has given up. I can't think of anything else to do unless we get a hint. Since grngecko seems disinclined to give one, I imagine that it'll stay unsolved for a long time.

Hmmm

Anyway it seems the fictional character in Halo happens to be quite good at solving modern encryption algorithms! Whether or not that's actually relevant, I did find that one class of modern algorithms is known as "block ciphers"(?!)

The simplest block cipher apparently is called "Lucifer" hmmm. Question - is the string any where near long enough to crack if there is anything in this idea to begin with....(or might we assume the same "encryption" key used for earlier pages?)

Edit ***Could those earlier death-related hints from gecko actually just refer to hell where the devil Lucifer (of DES-cipher fame) presides?

Re: Program for your "Toolbox"

Use your friend, search for "Cryptool" Download it, Install it. You'll be glad you did!

There was some earlier speculation about chuck's identity... anyway when I downloaded cryptool I noticed that it mainly covers shared key encryption algorithms, and does cover attack of symmetric encryptions (of which the Lucifer "block cipher" is an example), maybe thats promising...

Not sure what to enter as the text file to test this though - a readout of the whole puzzle from a certain direction, or only those letters in a particular orientation after slug rotation, not to mention the choice of possible guesses for the key... decisions, decisions!

Red River. .

OK, I'm sorry if someone's already posted a clue for this but I haven't come across one as yet.

I'm stuck on the page with the girl and the red river. I have decrypted the text, and have identified the author but can't seem to find the correct keyword!

If someone helps I'll write them into my mothers will!!! Twisted Evil

Cheers booba, will certainly examine all that
[Edit** ...the Permutation Block Cipher at that site might be promising, but I still can't guess a likely key in the right format]

Yes I'm quite intrigued by the lucifer connection as I was shown by someone here that grngecko has previously used an image (presumably lucifer) of a male angel casting a devils shadow in a similar looking blocks puzzle in the past.

So far though I have fallen at the first hurdle since the closest code to the "Lucifer blocks cipher" I can find is the DSE -ECB version, and that needs an 8-letter key for which no obvious guesses come to mind. Also DSE has differences from the original Lucifer (which seemed to be more of a binary shuffle code) so I'm not sure... Does anyone have a teraflop supercomputer - that would eliminate the guesswork!

As usual, its all looking too hard
