Re: Lucky #13

Trout me if this has been mentioned, but:

Is it just me, or are the red-circled words appearing in the craigslist ads as well? I first noticed it with "slime-coated".

well, taking the past 3 sets in alphabetical order, here's the info alphabetically with times (switched to 24h), in case there's a number pattern... with 13 posts per set, and 26 letters in the alphabet, there's gotta be something... right?

We've been focusing on the place names, but could the subject lines have some importance as well?
Otherwise, Atbash on the placenames maybe?
Has someone done this in chat solutions....(oh! how appropriate)...already?

ETA: Also, isn't East Village just New York since the place name was in the subject line?

That's what I'm thinking. I had the same thought about looking at the times they were posted, but I can't see any obvious patterns. It might be useful to convert them to UTC/GMT (or some other standard timezone), to see if they were posted in any particular order. But I don't have a good tool to do a large scale timezone conversion, and I don't have the time to do it by hand right now (I can take a crack at it once I get off work). ^.^;;;

In the spirit of collaboration, I did a Google Spreadsheet with some additional formulas to get first/last letters for stuff, etc.
It's orted in CL Posting Number order which is essentially date order on a 24 hour clock as the PostingNumbers are a global CL identifier across all the "sites".

I think I've opened it up for anybody to change. Have at it.

time of posting

Question from someone who has never posted on Craigslist: can the user control the time that a message is posted? Will it appear right away or is there a delay?

And from Manchester:

Insecurity and confusion have latched on to me. This is not who I am. This place is not where I am supposed to be.

hehe - yes, I would say we are completely lost. Wink

The first thing that leaped out at me from reading the list thebruce did was this:
Quote:

0425 0844 EDT Burlington
0425 1744 EDT Cleveland
0425 1344 MDT Denver

Is that just a wild coincidence?! What are the chances of posting at the 44th minute each time?

I've posted a few things. I've never been able to select a certain time to post.

Ugh, I've been playing around a lot with the city names and the title names etc etc.. wish we could figure this out and move on!

Of course, one begins to see patterns in everything, but one "pattern" is the fact that each set of 13 so far has contained 3 pairs of cities that start with the same letter:

May 2:
Code:
0502 0745 EDT  Asheville
0502 1552 NZST Auckland

0502 1847 BST  Manchester
0502 0335 MDT  Montana

0502 0726 BRT  Sao Paulo
0502 0405 PDT  Spokane

April 28:
Code:
0428 2136 CEST Amsterdam
0427 2325 EDT  Atlanta

0428 2221 EDT  New York (East Village)
0428 1719 CDT  New Orleans

0427 2347 EDT  Orlando
0428 2205 JT   Osaka

April 25:
Code:
0425 1721 ART  Buenos Aires
0425 0844 EDT  Burlington

0425 1344 MDT  Denver
0425 1130 EDT  Detroit

0425 0602 PDT  Seattle
0424 2356 CDT  St. Louis

Another thought: The I Ching puzzle had built-in redundancy because of course it wasn't clear that which people would share the contents of their packages with others. There is less need for similar redundancy in a Craigslist puzzle, but perhaps we are seeing repeated lists of the same thing (whatever that is) in here.

Very helpful, thanks.

A quick glance at the 04-27 to 04-28 subject headers reveals:
ETDTDILCTRSAH

from which we can extract:
ELDRITCH leaving DATTS

From 04-24/25 we get:
BGLCSETTAAAFC
which anagrams to: GET CABAL FACTS... Wink
and also CASTLE with some leftovers...

A path, perhaps...Or just a mindless wandering?

Stadt? German for 'city'.

if I were making this code

Here is a guess:

1. She can't control the times or the cities( because she is allowing those to be influenced by players)

2. She can control:

a. Subject line
b. You: and Me: lines
c. Story - text in message.

Of those I would think the Subject line, the Me line and maybe the story would be where I would hide a message, and if to make it not too hard, I would use the first letter.

3. What cracks me up is the w4w and w4m.. How about if in the w4m she did a simple substitution with m=w? In the w4w there is no substitution?

It would be simple, and funny at the same time. Wink

Google Spreadsheet of CLs

Nice job, Rogi!
I've added the 1st and last letters from the "You:" and "Me:" lines.
I'm sorry that I don't know how to add a column, but if someone would do that, I'll glady split up the Me: (1st/last) column.

While doing this task, I noticed that some of these lines ended in periods, while others didn't. It's probably not even worth mentioning (META: maybe it was different writers?), but the circled "Look Closely" on the package contents has me doing just that. So, I included the periods on the spreadsheet.

I haven't done any analysis on this yet, but I was spurred on when I saw that the three Harrisonburg messages in date order....

Spells out MAP. Just a coincidence? Could be.

Incidentally, those three CLs have the Arabic phrases in common.
