I was just going through some of the older CLs and thought that this seemed worth resurrecting, given the content of some of the more recent ones we've seen.

This is from the very first batch, Providence 4/13:

You: Turning the corner at third.
Me: Standing next to the guy with the mask.

Over before it started, really. We had no chance. It's been that same way the past few nights. Give me a call and let me know if you remember it differently. Until then, I'll bseeingu.

Also, who is Duane? A quick google of Duane + Lovecraft comes up with a Duane W. Rimel, another horror writer. They seemed to have collaborated. Just throwing it out there.

Got to run now. I'll have to rack my brain on this later...

Well, given that the title of the CL is "Duane ain't got a clue", I'd say that Duane could be any of the players of this game Confused

Probably inconsequential, but she heard the screams on East 2nd street, between 1st and 2nd Avenue....

... there is a cemetery there called The New York City Marble Cemetery. But it's one of those cemeteries where bodies are interred in vaults. There are no gravestones, which makes me think this isn't the cemetery she's envisioning. The names are contained on plaques in the surrounding walls, which makes me think of the wall and ashes she mentioned in a CL.

No angel that I can find though....

/just diggin'

Waiting for the light, you ask if I'm lost. I try to explain that I lost a friend and thought he might be here. As we cross, you point up the street to the red awning.

"Ask for Nicole. She knows things."

You walk into your deli and I continue along second.

Nicky's ?

Yeah - I went through all of local cemeteries too Very Happy

There're actually two very close to each other - and with confusingly similar names.

The New York City Marble Cemetery that you linked to is the more 'normal' kind - neat rows of marble vaults, above ground. From the plan of the plots, some are marked as having monuments, so one of the vaults might have an angel on it, but I couldn't find any mentioned, or any photos that show any.

Around the corner is a more unusual cemetery The New York Marble Cemetery(just the word 'City' differentiating the two names).
At that one all of the vaults are underground, and not accessable to the public - the land above is just an open grassy area with seats. All of the names of the internees are simply on plaques on the walls around the site.

That cemetery has no monuments of any kind, so definitely no angels - it looks pretty empty from the photos.

All of the vaults underground are arranged in blocks of 26 - which struck me as a strange number (and obviously 2 * 13) - but I couldn't find anything that might link it to the info we have.

I went through all the names of the internees at both sites and neither had anything that jumped out.

edit:
Okay we've seen that "Vietnamese restaurant" before, and it could be "Nicky's" (although it doesn't seem like that's the same as Nicole).

I'm trying to track down connections between Allan Ginsberg's "Howl" and Alphabet City.

edit2: possible connection: 170 E. 2nd St (between Aves B & A): "Poet Allen Ginsberg lived here from 1958-61, where he wrote "Kaddish" and edited Naked Lunch. Where Ginsberg and Timothy Leary began planning the psychedelic revolution."

Also, I can't find a bar/restarant named "Heaven" in the area. What could that be?

Okay, I've had a flash of insight into "Duane":

This is what I've been using to try to find out what's on those blocks in Alphabet City: http://mondomap.com/mondo/index.cfm?bid=153

And I noticed that at the corner of Avenue B and 2nd Street is a "Duane Reade", a drugstore. Taking another look at http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/mis/324752836.html it seems to fit.

and it gives us another location. I think we if we can piece together the path here, we can place these new posts in order.. which might, uh, help? maybe?

Your Deli is right across the street from Duane Reade on B.

Nice!

And continuing East across Avenue B, across the Avenue from Duane Reade is "Prodigy", which appears to be a shop of some kind. I think that's what this is referring to:

From http://york.craigslist.org/mis/324791015.html
Quote:
2 B 2 Far
I want to get away. I know he'll stick to his side of the street. People come to him and, if they don't, they can find another on another corner. There's no end to the market here - people looking for an escape, a quick cure or little trinket to kill the pain and make the place seem more like home. So, I cross the Avenue. It doesn't seem right, but what do I know.

According the the kid genius, not much. He's too talented for his age. He knows it, but doesn't seem to care. As soon as I approach, he tells me to had back the other way. When I hesitate, he gets this look in his eye that says I'd better listen.

JUST DO IT!

A kid a fraction of my age and half my size. The force of his words knocked me back. I almost laughed. You did.

EDIT: Two more-

There's Smoke Heaven and Tattoo Heaven, both listed as 174 E 2nd St. So that's two doors down if NY numbers buidlings like we do in the UK.

Or just a little further away you've got the Grace Heaven Salon on E 3rd St betwen Ave B and Ave C.

I think the clue to the first letters of the cities ARE that we'd already figured out it was pretty much the alphabet. There you go--Alphabet City.

Well done, everyone.

Anyone close enough to give it a visit if we figure out where?
