I've been watching, and I'm interested, even though I didn't get a pdf myself.

I've swapped the shift symbols for their non-shift alternatives. Two of the characters don't have numerical alternatives, at least not on my keyboard. That's +/= and `, which is non-shift anyway.

Not sure what that gives you, other than no 2s, 3s, 9s or 0s.

As for the .pdfs, all I've noticed is that all the fronts have letters and the backs have numbers. The numbers and letters don't always match up, so can't be a simple subsitution thing. One question: are the folded images from the excel sheet done with the folds done with the conventional valley/mountain folds, or the reversed versions?

I've been looking at the yellow/orange areas of the squares too. A few of them seem to resemble upside down letters; t, l, s, i etc. Don't know if that's relevant, but it might tie into the ups and downs clue somehow.

The sudoku, if that's what it is, doesn't work in the form on the excel sheet. I started trying to fill it in and got too many ones and sevens in the wrong place, so I'll play around with it some more and see if I can find an order that works. Smile

If anything else jumps to mind I'll let you know. Smile

here
all 9

All 9 for your viewing pleasure, courtesy of clue less, and his latest "hint" when I mailed him:

Paul,
Hope I can call you that.
First off, sorry about not getting back to you, sooner. I took a long weekend and didn't see it till today.
Only 5 of the 60 or so people that this 'thing' was sent to ever replied.
There were nine separate emails sent out, originally.
You are the only one of your 'group' who has replied to me about all this.

I've tried to bring some order to all of it to make it add-up, somehow. But to no avail. I'm not very good at juggling a bunch of projects all at once. I'm a simple, "one thing at a time" person, normally. I assume the origami isn't an animal or something. What with all the numbers and letters.

Sorry that I'm so lazy, but if somebody makes a composite of this, I'll do the origami as I think it goes and post it here.

I wonder in the 'one thing at a time' bit in his email was a hint, somehow? Either as 'do them one at a time' or as 'do it all as one'.

Hmm... that wasn't helpful, was it? Sorry. Embarassed

It seems Clue Less is testing the email waters again... I (along with others, since he/she forgot to do a BCC) received an email today:

Quote:
I can't go into much detail on this (yet) and for that I do apologize.
I will be sending you more information about 'this', in a few days.
But for the moment, I need your assistance with something.

On April 25th, you were sent an email from this account that included an attached Adobe PDF file.
I need for you to reply to this email so I can determine what happened with the original email sent.
Please be assured that this isn't some kind of Nigerian scam or something

Do you remember (or have a record of) receiving the previous email?

If you do, could you tell me what happened to it?

"I ignored it because it looked lame." or
"I was upset that my SPAM filter didn't catch it and deleted it!"
are perfectly acceptable answers.

If you didn't receive it and have no record of it in your trash or SPAM folders, please let me know about that, as well.

Basically, if you receive this email, I'd appreciate a quick reply to it so I can go on to the next step.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

As I said, more information will be forthcoming.

I simply responded and let the person know that I don't believe I received a PDF in email but I could be mistaken... I did, however, obviously receive *this* latest one.

I guess we'll see what happens from here...

Fessin' Up
Admin(s) can move this thread, if they see fit.

Well... I guess it's time to let you all know what this was about.

In short, this was an effort to determine the viability of an email trailhead in today's world of SPAM-laden inboxes and because, if this kind of information is available, the developer community doesn't tend to share it. I wanted to provide the community with some real-world stats and not rely on reports from post-game chats, etc. which may be skewed by hubris, lack of in-depth research or just because the sponsors are watching.

I've started a new topic in the Puppet Master Guide Meta area to report my findings and open discussion on the specifics of what I found and why I structured the activities the way I did. It includes response rates and limited, anonymous, player demographics the various disposition outcomes found during the investigation.

I did this experiment partly out of morbid curiosity about why so many games die on the vine but primarily as a resource that future efforts might be able to use as a guide so they can better plan their activities.

This thread can remain for any who wish to continue with the puzzles.
Any of the puzzles, when solved, would have let you know this was not really a trailhead.

There were some surprising learnings around that, as well, which might also be a topic of discussion. Certain assumptions made by the players and difficulty determining an "order" are two that are interesting insights into game dynamics.

I'm sure there are those who will take great exception at my having perpetrated this fraud on the community and if that is your position, I do apologize for the deception. If you have a major beef with it that you don't want to air on the fora, PM me to discuss your concerns with any aspects of this test or me as an individual. If you feel I "owe" you, we can talk about that, too.

But, I'm hoping most will accept that it was done for noble reasons and understand that It's not something I plan on doing more of in the future.

Another thing I learned is that interactions are something I truly don't do well. I have to give props to the PMs who do it so seamlessly. One of my constraints in this was to be as responsive as possible and I made some questionable judgment calls in that respect. I share some of my guffaws in the other post, which might make good additions to the "Dos and Don'ts" area of the PM Guide.
