[PUZZLE?] Words Circled in Red from Packages

The packages contained torn out pages from Monsters of the Sea , Mountains of Madness, and the Fall 2006 edition of 2600; with certain words circled in red. The list can be found on the wiki : http://bsuwiki.arghive.com/Package_Contents

I noticed that some of these circles aren't directly over words. So I was wondering if we are meant to look at the word(s) that are the reverse side of the page.

Could those of you that received packages, hold your page up to the light and see what word would fall in that circle? Thanks.

ETA: This other wiki link that details the circled words. http://bsuwiki.arghive.com/Literature

EDIT: Modified tag. --Phaedra

I think it more likely, given the "Old Ones" that is circled, that the words meant to be culled are the ones on the same face.

You can see a general theme with the words, but the Flickr one I think may be different.

None of my red circles line up with words on the opposite side of the page.

Given the teamwork effort that's been necessary for the I Ching decryption, is there any chance the circles line up if you overlap the pages, perhaps spelling something out in very bubbly handwriting (or morse code, or perhaps braille?)

I tried ordering the words based on which line they were on - the words on the top of the page first, those at the bottom last. Didn't really come together into something that makes much sense, but here's what line each word is on:

Supernatural - line 0, p.145/146
fears – line 3, p.145/146
slime-coated - line 6, p.65/66
curious - line 9, pg. 65/55
warnings - line 11, p.5/6
lurking - line 12, p.55/56
realisation - line 13, pg 125/126
hostile - line 14, p.25/26
psychic – line 15, p.125/126
marvels – line 15, p.155/156
Lake - line 16, p.15/16
sculptures - line 17, pg 55/56
creatures – line 19, pg. 65/66
bizarre – line 19, pg 165/166
hints – line 20, pg pg 125/126
silence – line 22, pg 85/86
lonely – line 23, pg 155/156
spook - line 29, pg. 145/146
Old Ones – line 31, pg 85/86
Ghost – line 31, pg 155/156

There's one word on almost every line, with very few repeats, which I thought was interesting. I don't know about the words on page 35/36, since a picture hasn't been posted yet.

..oops, I didn't see you had this thread up already, so I'll quote my post in the trailhead thread;
Quote:

Sorry to double post, but I feel this warrants it's own post.

Just a thought dump, buuuut...

Looking over the literature, it seems there is a definite pattern in which pages are ripped out from these books. These, along with the circled words, seem like a likely puzzle.

Based on what we have so far, every 10th page, front and back, is ripped out and mailed to someone. The list (including missing pages) should look like this:

"At the Mountains of Madness" (different edition; same as SHiL, below)

* p.5/6 (warnings circled)
* p.15/16 (Lake circled)
* p.25/26 (hostile circled)
* p.35/36 (madness mystery vain circled)
* p.45/46 ???
* p.55/56 (lurking sculptures circled)
* p.65/66 (slime-coated curious creatures circled)
* p.75/76 ???
* p.85/86 (fears silence Old Ones circled)
* p.95/96 ???

"Supernatural Horror in Literature"

* p.105/106 ???
* p.115/116 ???
* p.125/126 (psychic bizarre hints realisation circled)
* p.135/136 ???
* p.145/146 (supernatural spook circled)
* p.155/156 (marvels lonely ghost circled)
* p.165/166 ???
* p.175/176 ???
* p.185/186 ???
* p.195/196 ???
* p.205/206 ???
* p.215/216 ???

If the books intermux, then we may only be missing 95-115, which seems much more sensible; I don't know how many pages there are total for SHiL, since we seem unsure as to which edition was used. (None on Amazon had nearly as many pages as this one seems to.)

So, we're waiting on at least three pages to surface...

[UPDATE/EDIT] Fixed page numbering, since they're both from the same book. Since the book has 224 pages, seems like we're looking at a MAX of 12 missing pages.

I noticed that in many cases the circles encompass two lines of text and sometimes its hard to tell the word that is being circled. So I just now I had this idea that maybe we need to look at the letters outside of the circles. The letters that are closest to the red ink on the outside. Its late and I haven't looked into this but its an idea...hehe

We created a new page on the Wiki, Red Words, to highlight the red circled words from the Definitive Edition.
We've even tried to decode it taking the 1st letter on page 5, 2nd letter on page 15, 3rd letter on page 25, etc.
We ignored hyphens and spaces.

If that's the correct code, we have WASN_NO_E___R_OO___
although we don't know how many missing pages we have from the end.

Some ideas we've tossed around are
WASNT...
WAS NANOTECH....

I've looked for new domains that start with WASN, but none had double o's at the back.

feel free to spec, or make suggestions.

I thought there might be something to the fact that the number of letters (for the most part) increases every time. This idea definitely has some weight to it. Very Happy

I'm still puzzled by Page 125. Why was psychic circled twice? Maybe "day" was also supposed to be circled...

Could the red circles be laid over the pages with no words circled to grab extra words?

11 circled words, 11 missing pages....coincidence...probably.

Can someone check?

[Edited] Because I made the mistake of not [RTFT] reading the f** thread prior to posting. Some people! Geez. Rolling Eyes

What also seems odd is the circles are not centered.
Could the red circles do double duty by highlighting words on the back pages also? Or perhaps be overlayed on the pages with no words circled to grab extra words?

Can someone check?

I'm pretty sure somebody checked the back page thing without any sort of sucess. I'm just not sure who, with what page, and where it was reported.

Overlaying might work though.
