Many industrious folks create Guides, Trails, and Who's Who docs out of the forums, and these go a long way. However, as someone who worked to keep one of these source materials going on S4E, it can be very time consuming.

Yes. But what does this have to do with forums?

Because forums can be difficult to navigate when looking for old data (albiet easier now that I know about the radio button), many people go off the forum and create separate webpages to host this info. My question is might there be a way to better do this "in-forum" or is the best solution to go off and create these separate sites?

Hope that clears it up.

There was a time I was playing around with the idea of using these forums to actually maintain a Guide. A separate forum only where only moderators could post, and a linear guide of sorts could be maintained.

It's actually quite doable with a couple of tweaks, I think. You can see my stab at it at the mothballed ARGN Forums.

One thing that I think would be really helpful for the moderators to do that I haen't seen lately, would be to set up a moderated thread where they could copy just the posts they deem important, i.e. new sites, puzzles, solves, etc. This worked really well at Cloudmakers-Moderated and Jawbreakers-Moderated, as it was a great way to just browse to see the major developments, without having to wade through a bunch of discussion and spec.

Great idea Steve!

One of my pet peves about using the forums to posts Who's Who docs for S4E was that sometimes a newbie would come in and post to the thread. If it were locked, then you'd prevent the problem up front.

Any other ideas?

Why do I feel like I'm in the middle of an exam that I haven't prepared for, or the unwitting participant in a focus group or something? Confused

Because when I'm not a 100-year old archeologist of the unknown, I'm a market research analyst. That might be why... Very Happy Now if I could only find a way to virtually put out M&M's and stale goldfish crackers onto the forum, then it would really feel like a focus group!

But don't worry, these questions aren't for any purpose other than my own curiosity.
