[TRAILHEAD] MOD-X
Complex puzzle-trail ahead!

I get to speak to all sorts of corporate types in my job, but none quite so interesting as one I spoke to today, by the name of Dr John Dimmock. He was the first person in the UK to (legally) send data over a phone line.

After spending an hour talking about the future of wireless networks, his encounters with Bill Gates (he was a keynote speaker alongside him on several occasions), and crystals as data storage, he pointed me to the following website.

www.mod-x.co.uk

Apparently, it is some sort of puzzle-trail set up as a recruitment tool to find security experts. He and some other brainboxes have managed to get to level five, but he said it goes all the way up to level 10.

I figured that people here might enjoy the challenge, but I can't even get past the login-screen.

The instructions for the login procedure are in a zip-file which contains the following text:

Code:
begin 666 Restricted.zip
M4$L#!!0````(`%T[="_]<LYX`P(``'0#```.````4F5S=')I8W1E9"YT>'1M
M4\MNVT`0NQOP/TSNM@PT0!/X4N16`RE0%.GC.I9&TE;2CKH/J_K[<E>A#I-&[;E`-H%'(EY@G[/(-I',=GI;XN"H49?''YXT#LE]BNU.<!&,*(W

`
end

The webpage that it comes from says the following about it:

your hint is: this is a popular encoding, not an encryption

EDIT: Moved to Timewasters. --Phaedra

Ahah! Thank you, that was exactly what I was looking for.

I decoded the text file using a UUdecoder program from http://www.miken.com/uud/

which gave me the following text:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Agent,

I hope I am talking to the right person. if this information were to fall into the wrong hands - this project would be over. As you have got this far - I presume that what I am going to tell you will not go any further than you.

The normal login procedure has become unsafe, and we fear that in the past few weeks we may have been broken into. Luckily, we have acted quickly and traced a few of the intrusion attempts. We managed to get a couple of items from the intruders before they vanished - However, we are having problems with some of the information we have found, their encryption systems are far in advance of our own.

As I said, the login procedure has changed. To continue, use the following password at the URL provided.

Password: 68V837!!?327b
URL: http://www.mod-x.co.uk/first/answer.php

I will speak to you again once you are there.

Mod-X

Putting the password into the URL will then take you to the sign-up page, where you can register an account.

Anyone else following this besides me?

I made an account and got started. I got through the first few levels. Now I am on the "training mission" one. The method is not immediately obvious to me, so I'm taking a break. I'll look at it again in awhile. Are you working on any of the levels?

in the source cod emeta there is this company : Wangproducts

http://www.wangproducts.co.uk/

most of the articels on the sites can teach you a thing or seven about hacking and the hacking-scene and methods.

Me not sure if it is an ARG , looks more like a glorified hacker challenge.
But i will keep an eye on.
(I have been wrong before)

greetings,

Waldo

Mod-x is not new... I played it several (4 or 5) years ago. I may have to return and see what is happening there at the moment. I had forgotten all about it!!

It is more of a hacker challenge than ARG...but from memory had quite a cool little story attached to it
