On the second port some different stuff is comming up:

Admin has disconnected.
You go home.
Void
You see nothing special.
Contents:
Admin
Visible Exits:

Active Topics:

Also the link ADMIN is http://www.sentryoutpost.com:4198/6595/command:look Admin

Which may mean if we use that format we can get other commands to work.

Trying to make sure I'm doing the right thing - we are supposed to download mudlib.pl, open it, and read the coding in an attempt to figure out where it is messed up?

That was the idea. I don't know if it will help, but it's worth a shot.

Ok, so then everyone who downloads mudlib.pl sees this (but a lot more of it):

Quote:
sub wall
{
my($me, $arg, $arg1, $arg2) = @_;
if (!&wizardTest($me)) {
&tellRoom($me, "Only a wizard can do that.");
return;
}
$arg =~ s/^\s+//;
my($o);
for $o (@objects) {
if ($o->{"type"} == $player) {
&tellPlayer($o->{"id"},
$objects[$me]{"name"} . " yells, \""
. $arg . "\"");
}
}
}

sub success
{
my($me, $id, $default, $odefault) = @_;
if ($objects[$id]{"success"} ne "") {
&tellPlayer($me, &substitute($me, $objects[$id]{"success"}));
} else {
if ($default ne "") {
&tellPlayer($me, $default);
}
}
if ($objects[$id]{"osuccess"} ne "") {
&tellRoom($objects[$me]{"location"}, $me, $objects[$me]{"name"} .
" " . &substitute($me, $objects[$id]{"osuccess"}));
} else {
if ($odefault ne "") {
&tellRoom($objects[$me]{"location"}, $me, $odefault);
}
}
}

sub fail
{
my($me, $id, $default, $odefault) = @_;
if ($objects[$id]{"fail"} ne "") {
&tellPlayer($me, &substitute($me, $objects[$id]{"fail"}));

These are the coded instructions which run the MUD, correct? And this particular coding language is called PERL?

Sorry to be dense, I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the coding/hacking/technical stuff. It fascinates me.

Yes, precisely. They are subroutines for the MUD to run. It is a set of instructions telling the computer what to do when it gets a command.

I had this about a half hour ago with no working commands, but it's changed back to the:

Can't register either.....why? (I used a home addy - not a web based one and still got rejected)

Maybe you have to log in as user choraz or lucky?

Maybe if you float around in the void long enough you'll attract the attention of the Elder Gods.

HPL would approve of that Smile

I haven't gotten to play around with the MUD and stuff, so I don't really know all that y'all are seeing, but has anyone tried looking at Void yet? Or was that where the "you see nothing special" message came from? The phrase "looking into the void" springs to mind.

Edit: To clarify - using the MUD "look" command to look at object Void.

I should probably pre-emptively trout myself. I'm trying to get caught up but I may have missed something in my read-through. Wink

I used to mess around in muds years ago, so I tried all the usual 'look' and movement commands. I can't get anything out of this though. Usually I can't even connect. I'm tempted to download an actual mud client and try going in that way instead of using the webpage.

Has anyone had success registering their own account?

If you have a url and port

I'm an admin/immortal on a MUD, so if you guys can give me a clear host and port number I can get on there and see if I can get anything to happen.

A new guy (possibly IG) posted on SO.. apparently he's going to come to the rescue on the MUD:

Quote:
Hey folks, this is Icculus from mudconnect - still on the clock so only have a few mins here right now.

I found the mud source code that Kevin told me about but I don't have permission to execute the 'mud' script, but I can copy the files so should be able to get it running at some point.

Who are the mud hotshots Kevin was telling me about? Do they need
wizard access if I can get the mud up and running?

Give me some time to poke around.

Definitely an IG character.

ETA: But also a MUD guru.

Awesome, but feel strange that we seem to be needing a lot of IG character help to solve our puzzles. Is that common?

I was just thinking the same thing. Confused Hati just popped up and volunteered to look into the MUD stuff, so we have someone in our ability pool to research this; I hope Hati is going to be given the chance to look for a solution before the character comes up with one. Maybe the PMs assumed that we didn't have anyone with the expertise available?

Tis working now....

Icculus wrote:
Hey again, think I have the mud in a working condition now, though no promises that it doesn't crash *grin*.

When I first booted the mud up I noticed all kinds of nonsense going on from a connected user named 'chorazos', was this one of you sniffing around? It crashed right after and I found some config issues that needed to be tweaked, it looks like it works now and no sign of any other connections.

Going to leave it running for now, you can reach the mud by telnetting to sentryoutpost.com port 4242 , if I remember my Perlmud think you need to hit the other port ( 4243 ) to create new logins...

Rowan, if you have LPmud/Diku experience this should be cake for you - pop in sometime later or tomorrow and look for me on the mud and I can set your wizard flag, cool?
