If it said by the mark 2, you counted up or down from 2, same with 5, 7, 1, etc.

And someone discussed with me this concept

When going East we write this way
siht ekil etirw ew tsew gniog nehW

Same concept for north and south

Makes sense to me - again back to the circles idea that worked

Its the depth adn the directions

a "mark" is an indicator of depth.

so, "by the mark two" = 2 fathoms = 12 feet.
the relative change in depth, AND the ACTUAL measurement in feet, is irrelevant to solving this puzzle.

1. record the direction the ship is moving in and record teh depths in fathoms.

2. draw a box.

3. imagine the ship moving from the bottom left corner, to the bottom right corner, to the top right corner, to the top left corner, and back to the bottom left corner of the box.

4. record the depths along each leg of the journey (i.e. 2, 7,5,7, 3).

5. notice that the depths on the bottom leg (going E) are always greater than the depths along the top of the box (heading W). Notice also tha tthe depths along the left side of hte box (heading S) are always greater than the depths along the right side of the box (heading N).

6. Notice that the solution to the next location corrosponds to the number of pairs of depths (N/S, and E/W).

7. S>N and E>W, therefore, subtracting the depths will lead to a solution that is expressed in XXXX S, XXXXX E.

8. subtract the depths recorded on teh westerly leg from those depths recorded on teh easterly leg to get your S coordinate.

9. subtract the depths recorded on teh northerly leg from those recorded on the southerly leg to get your E coordinate.

I NEED help understanding #4 - how did you come up with 2, 7, 5, 7, 3? Please be specific. I need this one spelled out for me because even though I did everything you said (and understood it) and noted the "mark" and the number of knots, I couldn't come up with 2-7-5-7-3.

THANKS!!

by the mark 2 - gave you the first 2
then the knots, 5 (+2 that you started at) gives 7

The rest is simple math counting up and down according to the # of knots

why reversing W and N???

Reverse West & North (why I don't know but it is the only way it works)
9568 - 7132 = 2436 S
27573 - 16242 = 11331 E

I don't understand why we have to reverse W and N?!?!??
Sabator says that it is because the map is reversed. But then why do you reverse W and N and not E and S??? This does not make any sense.

This seems completely arbitraty and I can't see the logical reason behind this.

At times the avatar name does change to Kloo, it has happen to me once.
A Kloo is a Gnome that bring the information to people in need of it.

Don't know why it happens but sometimes it does.

The reasoning behind reversing north and west is due to our current location. To get a coordinate out of our present location which is in the southern hemisphere and in the eastern hemishere we need to convert everything to south and east to plot against. If we had been in the northern hemisphere we would have reversed south.

Directions

I think it's kinda easier:

S and E are directions we are heading for, so N and W is opposite for our path, so when knots "move us" to N or W, we make "steps back", so numbers have to be placed in reverse order, when we go to S or E...

as example: we heading north through 2-3-1-7 - our final stand id on 7, and when we come back to south we should pass through 7-1-3-2 - in THIS sequence... I believe it's clear Smile

Addition

actually if we post the numbers from W to E and from N to S (as we have to go), we'll have:

ABSOLUTE WEST-1-6-2-4-2-CURRENT LOCATION-2-7-5-7-3-ABSOLUTE EAST
ABSOLUTE NORTH-7-1-3-2-CURRENT LOCATION-9-5-6-8-ABSOLUTE SOUTH

and actually we don't count 9568-7132 and 27573-16242, but each pair separately (9-7, 5-1, 6-3 etc.)

Now come on! Very Happy
just using some other words to help people understand it easier =))) people often need pictures instead of words to understand Cool

Wordy

Just messing with ya, just call me wordy. I know my mind doesn't think like others. I think that I've explained my position well and I get the looks like huh and I always thought it was just my Yankee accent well now I know it's just me.
