I have been having these discussions with friends in RL for a while now - but more related to Geocaching. Granted, around my area {south NJ, pine barrens} police, officials, rangers, etc are all consious of geocaching, and most support us because of our policy of "cache in, trash out" HOWEVER, in other locations there are politicians trying to put a stop to it because of security issues. The discussions mostly consist of what can we do to make this an acceptable activity? It is fully legal, however you find people being accused constantly of security issues. I just LOVE hearing stories of the bombsquads blowing up a cache only to find little plastic toys or geobugs...

Well, my big problem with the Adult Swimvertising is that people were parading it around as "art". It's advertising. Placed in public places without permission or compensation. If Turner Broadcasting is gonna use the public space for their promotions, the public should get something in return, y'know.

Plus, the reason geocaching is legal in general is that cache-placers need permission from the landowner to place a cache (which, to be honest, is something I'm rarely convinced is done, from experience). And there aren't supposed to be caches placed in sensitive locations, like under bridges and whatnot.

Whatever. I'm really just pissed off at those ATHFertizers. Chalk it up to me not really being a fan of the show. (And yes, I've seen plenty of episodes.)

Geocaching - we mostly place around here in areas of state forrests... we do not get permission for said items. We do not need permission for said items. I do not know what it is like in other areas, as i have said before, however in our area even the rangers play along and sign a cache log on occasion when they find one. It is SUCH a big deal in our area, no one bats an eyelash at a cache.

as for the AS crap, i agree, they should have gotten permission, they went about it ALL wrong, that doesn't excuse the aftermath behaviour from boston however.

I agree. It's not necessarily the fact that the items were investigated--it's more frustrating that it's blown out of proportion.

Follow up report

There has been a follow up interview with the head of marketing for the company. It doesn't look like there will be any formal charges, and it seems as though the company is unapologetic?

You know, we really don't like being treated like we're stupid... don't pose as some innocent newcomer just to have a chance to shill your own website/product AGAIN (and again and again...). Also, if you yourself need to come here to point out what the campaign was actually about, you'd think it wasn't all too effective, now was it?

We've seen it, we read about it, we know what it was related to, now read the Unfiction TOS and stop using our site as a place to get some free advertising.

Well, it WAS the most innocent picture of the question-mark-box I could find... Wink

Oh, and I do agree that it can be better to err on the side of caution when people call in a possible bomb-threat, but OVERreacting isn't a good idea. In the cases mentioned above (unknown but silly objects), let one or two 'techies' (police-officers or firemen who really know about bombs and chemicals) check things out. Only áfter they confirm a possible threat, close off the premises and call in the cavalry.

Too bad the paranoid-levels are so high these days... If they were not, one could have a lot more fun. Very Happy

Your anger is your ignorance, you have no idea who I am.

The more you wave your finger, the less likely new comers like myself will be interested in engaging these forums.

Have a terrific day Very Happy

Your ignorance is funny, you have no idea about traceroutes, apparently. Have an even better day, until your IP range is banned if you keep this up.

I think leaving a geocache in the middle of a state forest is different than leaving unidentified packages in the middle of a busy city. The big campaign slogan here in New York is "if you see something, say something." (There isn't any distinction made about if what you see looks like a Mario game. Wink )
Because I've heard that message over and over again, I would report something that looked odd to me. I also wouldn't leave packages anywhere; it wouldn't even occur to me to leave packages anywhere.

I don't feel qualified to comment on how the authorities should respond once something suspicious has been reported. But I think vpisteve's point is well taken, authorities should be notified in advance.
