From Wikipedia (heelstone):
Quote:
Some claim "Friar's Heel" is a corruption of "Freya's He-ol" or "Freya Sul", from the Germanic goddess Freyja.

Freyja leads to:
Quote:
Freyr and Freyja come from Germanic words meaning "lord" and "lady" respectively (cf. German Frau "woman, wife", Gothic Frauja "the Lord"). While there are some sources suggesting that she was called on to bring fruitfulness to fields or wombs, in Eddas she was portrayed as a goddess of fertility, love, beauty, and attraction. Freyja was also a goddess of war, death, magic, prophecies and wealth.

So she seems to encompass a lot of qualities of human nature.

The article goes on to mention Orion (something from the Completed):
Quote:
The Orion constellation was called Frigg's distaff or Freyja's distaff.

This is my first ARG, although I have been lurking on UF for a while... so I could be way off but it's getting interesting anyway. :]

Stonehenge! *bounces*

If you're interested, the stones actually come from Wales and the local plain. </geologist>

Maybe the answer is just 'stone'?

Doesn't really answer

More than Stonehenge. It is all of us. It is human nature itself

I think hazl had a good idea, maybe the link back to Orion is a clue that we are on the right track?

Does anyone have any more ideas, I have e-mailed Menelaus, but he hasn't replied to me. Have the rest of the completed seen this riddle? I can't make much sense out of it, but considering the other torments, it may be an idea to see if the riddle isn't more to do with the words than the sentence as a whole.

I can't find any information about the Friar dying from being struck by the Heel Stone. According to the legend he was struck on the heel by the stone, hence its name.

This could be a red herring, in which case we should be looking for something that killed a friar.

I've been working on this from a word puzzle angle, but nothing I've tried so far has made any sense.

Also, Menelaus put up a new post; i don't see any hints though, nothing in the code, and the only unusual things about the post are the capitalization of "WILL" and the misspelling of hero, but I think thats an innocent typo.

Menelaus wrote:
Unfortunately, the last Torment has not yet been solved. But a here[sic] WILL rise. May I remind you that the answer must be posted as a comment on my log.

PS: Sorry, for not being around for the last conference; good job, and thank you for handling it on your own RandomJaz.

Unless here/hero is a hint to vowel substitution in some way?

A bit vague, I know...

For the sake of noting typos, Menelaus said the "weapon" was bought from Ireland, not brought. It could be nothing, though...

Sorry to DP, I just registered.

I found another myth surrounding the friar/stonehenge thing.

Quote:
Further mythology concerns the Heel Stone was first named by Aubrey. He said it resembled an indentation of a heel. The legend surrounding this stone, also called the Friar's Heel, says a friar and the Devil were fighting. At the moment of sunrise the Devil was forced to run away, and the stone struck the friar on the heel.

This article also mentions that on midsummer day (june 24) the sun rises directly over the Heel Stone. I don't think this is too significant, though, as that date rolled around without any fanfare.

I thought I'd post the Heel Stone on Menelaus' blog. At least if it's wrong, we'll know that this isn't what we're looking for.

Wow. Good point. Never even noticed that no one suggested that to Menelaus. I hope (but doubt) it works.

[humor]He said something about human nature. Isn't it human nature to throw rocks at things?[/humor]

huh, guess we were all over-thinking this thing quite a bit. Laughing

Orion, you have proven to be the strongest among us. Your new title is Friar's Heel.

Grats stingray! Or, should I call you Friar's Heel. Very Happy

And another post. . .

Quote:
It will begin soon. Zero is calling upon the demons. Although, they appear stronger on this planet. Much stronger. Could he just be trying to overtake this planet? Does he need this area as a new strategical position? Maybe there's something about this world that I just can't figure out. Something that he wants.

If you are willing to die for your planet, join me in a conference on a date and time of your choosing. All of you, not just the Completed. I will need your contact information as well.

So when does everyone want to meet?

Any chance we can go for a time where those of us in the UK don't have to stay up until 3am to take part?!!
