Basic Mudding 101
Help those who need it!

OK, I just have one question to start this off. I need the room numbers for east hallway, west hallway so I can link back to them from my room. I haven't been able to locate the numbers so if someone has them, Please share. Thanks in advance.

examine (followed by an optional object name) gives you the full details of any room or object, including it's id number and all the flags that are set on it.

So you just type examine in one of those rooms.

Example (in the west hallway on the 66th floor):
Quote:

#66th Floor West Hallway #1252 Owner: sidtheduck Home: #0 linkok
buildok
Location: #0
You see nothing special.
Contents:
lobby;east;out #1296, Rowan #1299, fly;fly off #1313, doghouse #1342,
up;u #1358, Rasputin's Room (4269);rasputin;ras #1369, DJSampsons
Studio;d #1378, Occultus #111

This room is #1252
sidtheduck owns it
You can link to it
You can build off it
lobby;east;out - is an exit with id #1296
fly; fly off - is an exit with id #1313
etc

... and I'm object #111

Hope that helps.

If you go 'up' from that room it takes you to my home - you can set any room as home using @link me = room number, and then the 'home' command transports you there immediately.

Take a look if you're interested in examples of some of the flags that can be set - I've put some items in there that 'belong there' and can't be removed and set the room so that it can't be built on or linked to, but anyone can share it as 'home'.

I was just playing around with things, to test out the differences between this and the MUDs I'm used to.

Ahhhh, this explains it. The list of commands I printed out didn't have "examine" on it. Nevermind, i'm an idiot, it's there.

I've seen two different examples of commands from other games posted here as links, but I haven't seen *our* help file posted (yet, i'm still catching up). This would be a great [REF] thread to tack a proper FAQ.

brb...

I just typed the word "help" into our MUD and got back this list of commands:

Quote:
say, emote, whisper, page,
look, read, examine,
sign, write,
inventory, drop, get, take,
who, last,
help, motd, welcome, quit, home,

@topic, @doing, @stats, @find,
@dig, @create, @open,
@set, @describe, @name, @chown,
@teleport, @link, @lock,
@fail, @ofail, @success, @osuccess, @odrop,
@clean, @recycle,
@email, @password,

@toad, @boot, @gag, @ungag, @pcreate,
@wall, @shutdown, @dump, @rows, @tz, @24, @12, @reload

Type help followed by a command to learn more about what it does and how to use it. I'm sure there is a logic to the default order, but I can't see it (I'm rearranging them now). I'll get back to you...

hey, there's also a list of TOPICS you can append after the "help" command to learn more:

Quote:
topics, beginner, moving, talking, clothing,
building, locking, rooms, substitutions, flags, creatures,
email, admin, rules

I'm off to read the rules...

@dig (whatever you wanna call the room)

[Write down the number of the rooms you make and make a record of them]

@link me = #(a room number)

[This will link YOU to whatever room you specify, use 'home' to get there]

@describe (what you are describing) = (description of said thing)

@open (exit name) = #(a room number)

Now you have a room, with a description and an exit.

You can build more rooms, and link them together. You can put objects in rooms, @create <object> ... and you can lock objects (meaning people cant use them or pick them up, or even lock exits) @lock <object> = <keyname>

This is the basics. Eventually im fairly sure you can make Mobs Mobile-Objects. Which are objects that move around on their own. Some can be rooms, or just items. Like a walking Refrigerator that has a land of icecream and leftovers inside. Or a key with legs. Or a grue that plans to eat you. ...

Go to floor 66, and link your rooms, lets build chaos Smile

Sorry if this has been covered--I've been out for about 2 weeks (real life intruding), and am trying madly to catch up.

Has anyone tried replicating things from the dream world in the MUD and seeing if its reflected in the craigslist postings? I'm just thinking of all of the dreams in which BA said things about writing on walls, or trying to get out of buildings, or turning on coffeemakers.

Probably wouldn't achieve anything, but....

EDIT: Trout just checked today's Craigslist thread, and it appears that's what you're doing. Duuuuh.
