bouy

lol@uall wrote:
YOU ALL NEED TO TAKE A GOOD LOOK

the bouy = 8 due to the lightning allway striking in the place of the falling bouy.. 2 marks on the bouy are a mirror image, or a flip image and at the end of the strike, is an 8

possible solution would be 31185141 or flipped 35488453

good luck but think again

The lightning to NOT hit the bouy, you can turn the view a little an make the lightning hit but it doesnt hit every where, yes there is a 8 in the lightning but dont look like it got anything with the bouy to do...
The bouy is either 5+1 from task 6, a 2 seeing 2 symbols or its the two lanterns in the tast added together (3+4=7) >_>

Only one attempt at the final answer?
Only one attempt at the final answer?

I thought you all knew that Pirate Rules are ..........."More....sort..of........Guidelines". Wink I got 3 on the first lantern, 1 for the next, a bottle, 6 and 2 for the symbols on the bouy, 5 for the symbol on the jug, 1 another bottle, 4 on the second lantern and 1 for the last bottle. 3162 5141.

The only problem with this answer are that there are only 60 minutes in 1 degree so, 62' is not possible. It would equate to 32 02'

"the Code.. More of a Guideline..."

Seems to me, that the definitions in the Volvo rules, FIT what a pirate should be?! Is there discrimination afloat?

Quote:
a Potential Finalist will be asked to honestly answer up to ten (10) questions about his/her eligibility and any and all prior felony or guilty plea convictions over the past ten (10) years. If a Potential Finalist does not meet the eligibility requirements or has been convicted in a court of law or entered a plea of guilty or no contest to any felony or any crime involving moral turpitude, dishonesty or theft or who has been convicted in a court of law or entered a plea of guilty or no contest

It occurs to me that "moral turpitude" has very different meanings depending on the country. Dating someone of the wrong religion is a serious matter in some countries.

Now, a question of integrity. Suppose you had a conviction on record. Would you admit it and wave goodbye to the $100,000 prize, or lie and hope nobody checked up on you?

Yet another solution...but unique (I think)

OK, I know I said earlier that the lightning was a red herring, but I'm thinking that might not be true. I see another 3 possibilities:

1.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The lightning 8 provides the number for unassigned bottles. Thus, all the bottles are 8, giving 38882548 instead of 31112541

2.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The lightning produces 2 8's that are about as close together as the red lanterns on the buoy. If you overlay the 8's on the buoy, they could lay on the lanterns and give them value. Of course, this would give you 9 numbers, not 8, if you count the bottles as 1.

3.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The lightning produces an 8 and a mirror image of the 8. Meaning that if you go left to right ("when few are LEFT"), 5 - jug, 4 - lantern, 3 - lantern, then 8 on buoy....invert to get the full number. 54388345. "From here we spread" could be the 8's in the middle of the number with the rest spreading left and right.

I'm done with the speculation. I submitted my answer long ago. I just had other solutions that hit me since then. Any thoughts?[/spoiler]

The portion you underlined regarding moral turpitude is pretty standard vetting language among contests of this sort. The winner will be, in effect, a product representative. Most companies would prefer an honest, untroubled, ethical individual as the icon of their game. Since an automobile is the main focus of the grand prize, I'm sure Volvo doesn't want to hand over keys to someone who has been convicted of drunk driving, lest they be accused of providing a weapon for murder. That isn't discrimination, just good business sense.

From my experience with Random House, Nusa, I can attest that a thorough background check is also a part of the process, along with some very binding contracts. There is much more to this than simply taking the contestant's word.

It's prolly very exciting to the person getting phoned today, and I wish them the best of luck in the finals!!!!!

Aw, it's no fun if you dodge answering the integrity question.

Reality is most people would lie (or at least conveniently "forget") for 100 grand, or even a 1 in 22 shot at it. Some people will kill for far less.

I came up with three possibilities while trying to solve:

3111 6541
3111 7541
3111 2541

The 6 was for the sum of the numbers on the messed up buoy from an earlier puzzle.

The 7 was for the maritime flag that represents that number.

The 2 was to count the two vertical lines as the Chinese numeral 2.

That's what was in my head, at any rate. I don't have any idea which way Volvo was going with it. Ambiguity like this always makes me doubt my results.

It's not a co-ordinate
It's just a sequence of numbers

My take is that, it's not a set of co-ordinates. It's just a sequence of numbers like a pin number. When I said about guidelines I meant about answering more than once. It was physically possible to for a reason. I didn't get the lightning flash on the bouy showing an eight (or even pieces of eight) Haar! I wonder if the sequence was slightly different for each country. Anyway I enjoyed it hugely. Well done to everyone. All the best from sunny West Cornwall.

RE: The Final Answer

If what we're seeing on other boards is accurate it was the 7 (the maritime flag) for the buoy. Personally I had gone for the 2 since it was a Chinese symbol which seemed to be more in line with everything we had seen up to now. Ah well. All the best to the finalists who got it right.

RE: Final Answer

Evidently someone in Thailand is claiming to be a finalist with the answer 31112541.
